PS2 Tops Total PS1 Sales In Europe

Well, the PS3 European delay isn't all bad news for Sony. Apparently, the lack of the new console just means gamers are that much more likely to pick up a PS2.

Now in its sixth year of existence, the now out-of-date console has officially sold 7 million more units than the original PlayStation sold after the same time period. If you're counting, that's over 40 million PS2s sold in the European regions.

"We are extremely proud of the continuing success of PlayStation 2," stated SCEE president and CEO David Reeves. "In the last month or so sales of PlayStation 2 throughout Europe and PAL territories has exceeded 100,000 units per week, which is extremely pleasing and proves the format is as popular now as it ever was."

Now the only question is, will the PS3 be the same monster success, despite the initial delay…?
