Sony: Vita Sales “Exploded” During The 2012 Holiday Season

As Sony doesn't release hardware numbers with the monthly NPD results, it's sometimes difficult to gauge the performance of the Vita.

Sales numbers get released at different times and we do know the unit could be selling a lot better than it is (it just needs software). However, that being said, it appears Sony is happy with the way their new portable performed during last holiday season.

According to what SCE UK boss Fergal Gara told CVG , Vita sales "absolutely exploded" around Christmas:

"We had a pre-Christmas lull where sales were quite low. But that absolutely exploded 20-fold from that low-point into the peak of Christmas. That's very encouraging and shows that with the right promotion and software we can light that fire."

And although we've complained about the lack of Vita software, especially in regards to what we see during the first six months of this year, Gara said we shouldn't worry. He admitted that the game release schedule appears light, but added- "The cupboard won't be bare." Yeah, well, it better not be. A price drop in North America and Europe would really help, too, as the Vita price cut in Japan resulted in a four-fold sales increase .

I got my Vita day one and I still love it immensely to this day… but Ben's absolutely correct in the fact that it hardly has any games now. Sure, there are a few really good titles, but once you get done with those, there isn't much in the way of entertainment IMO.

All it will take is a price cut here in the US and more awesome software, and the amazing piece of kit that is the Vita will fly off shelves!

I happen to be a Team Ninja fan so the empty cupboard feel hasn't happened yet, but Team Ninja needs to patch NGS2+, the slowdown isn't acceptable on any platform from any era. I also finished Golden Abyss recently. I still have a lot more WipEout to play. I'm pleased that Tekken 6 is coming to PS+ as well (pleased to fool around with it). I eagerly want DOA5+. The new KZ game looks promising too. Of course there'll be a GoW game as well.

I agree, you just need to have the Vita in your hands playing a game to know how amazing it is. It's cool to read how much fun you are having with it! I am just lost in Persona 3 Portable and that's not even a Vita game. I still haven't bought Persona 4 Golden. There is so much to play on this hand held it's unreal.

Temjin, I have NG2SP and the slowdown is fine, have you turned the Camera speed up in options? seriously, its fine.. I honestly dont know what everyone is moaning about unless its an issue concerning hard copy Vs digi.

agree Frosty, I have too many games now for the VITA, theres more on offer in the way of newer titles for me on the PSV than the PS3, I have brought more PSV games than PS3 games in the last 6 months. I have been playing one particular PSV game (Ragnarok) every day at work and at home… just cannot put it down, its superb. the Vita is on fire right now… and since the PS4 was announced we need to insert smug faces to all of us that have Vitas!

There's tonnes of content for the Vita now. The argument that there's a lack of software doesn't hold water any more.

Soul Sacrifice, Killzone and Tear Away are still to release but pretty much every week there's new Vita content appearing on the PS Store for download. You only need to go look.

And I'm referring to Vita specific software, not including PSP titles. If you're going to report on the Vita, there's no justification to complain every single time there's news on the console to mention your ill informed opinion because while it was true for the first few months of the Vita's life, the games library has grown significantly, that misconception is now null and void.

I mostly play MLB The Show on my Vita, and love it, but yes, more software would be a very good thing for this fine piece of hardware.

We all know where I stand with the Vita. I love it, that is all.

The PS vita has a major lack of new releases. Where are we at now? 2 new games a month for the vita. If we are lucky.

Go to the PSN store and go to the ps vita only section. Not alot of games there.

It's funny when English people call it "Viter" because they can't pronounce Vita.

10 hours into Persona 4 Golden. Amazing jRPG goodness! Where have you been all my life 🙂
I still have more Vita games than I have time to play them. That is fine for me. Love to see this piece of tech get the recognition that it deserves!

I got my Vita on day ?, and my next new game for it will be ?. While waiting for Vita sales to explode around here in the deep south, we have our own explosive celebrations. Did you know you can wrap colored sparklers with duck tape and they'll explode and create enough pressure to blow the pictures off of your wall, from your backyard? Try it sometime. 🙂

That's what Sony needs.

?? either you are very hard to please or you just havent been looking for the games on the Vita, theres loads out. and considering what the PS4 will do with the PSV, I dont think you can even mention WiiU and PSV in the same sentence (apart from there)… 🙂
