We finally have a portable with dual analog sticks, which means a shooter should be a very different experience.
Developers have already delivered a couple third-person action games for the PlayStation Vita ( Uncharted: Golden Abyss and Unit 13 ), and both have performed very well control-wise. However, the FPS is a very different animal, so a game like Resistance: Burning Skies will be a great test of the Vita's ability to handle a true-blue shooter. …and we really think it can do it.
Thus far, our hopes are high. Here's the latest trailer for the upcoming title; towards the end, you can catch a few snippets of impressive gameplay. There's no doubt that the Vita is a powerful little unit, and it should do this award-winning franchise justice.
Resistance: Burning Skies will be ready to go on May 29. If you're a fan of the series and, of course, are a Vita owner, this one should be a definite purchase consideration.

This title has a lot to make up for after Resistance 3, which lacked the depth of the previous two games and brought the series down from AAA status in my opinion. If I were to get a PS Vita, I might get thi game, but like all Vita titles at the minute it's not a title that makes me want to buy the console.
My friend, Resistance 3 was imo the best of the series. At least better than Resistance 2 but I couldn't disagree with your comment more. The series has always been under-rated but it got to go out on a high. Resistance 3 was the best shooter (single player campaign) of 2011.
HELL YEAH Frostface…….Coming from someone who got R1 as a launch title and played through the series, I personally think R3 was the best all around Single Player, and Hands Down had the best Multiplayer of the series……it just felt PERFECT !
It just came out @ a bad time because everybody was saving money for BF3 or MW3 and simple got OVERLOOKED.
Yeah R3 was one of the best shooters of 2011, totally agree. While I don't agree with it being the absolute #1 shooter (but a good contender for #2), I do think it is probably the #1 underrated title of 2011. A sad award to win though.
No, R3 was the among the best FPS games this console generation.
Wow, well I'm suprised by peoples reactions. I for one found it to be one of the biggest letdowns this gen. The story was so primitive, object – destroy the bng thin and lifeless and a boring character to follow through it. Sure ig blue flashy tower and every Chimera in it's way. The story mode I found just bland along with the protagonist, they tried to give him depth with being a family man and all, but it just didn't stand out at all.
My main problem was the Chimera, nothing new was explored about them. R1 especially explored the creatures deeply and I found it really intriuging to follow and learn more about them. While in R3, they we're just there. I liked the hopping creature and was hoping for more variations of Chimera other than the occassional boss, but it was not to be found.
I don't know about anyone elses experience on co-op but when I played it there were times at the end of levels or cutscenes where there would just be a 15 second pitch black screen, at first we thought teh game had froze, but it was just the games awful way of loading.
I haven't played online yet, but then I'm not really an online gamer, so I cannot account for the online experience, but as an offline game I just found it seriously lacking.
I notice that people who played Resistance 3 know it was a great game and loved it. The people who did not play it just follow the footsteps of other people who did not play the game either and lock their minds to the following, "the game isnt great because…"
What made it great to me was that it had just the right amount of old school elements, the weapons leveled up (which gave me a reason to use and enjoy more of them) and ALL of them were useful, the story may not have told us much about the Chimera but it was the ultimate underdog/close call story and it didn't do what most FPS do and just stick to one style of play all the way through. The environments were incredibly varied and each one had it's own feel to the point where the genre actually changed, for instance there were stealth portions, all out action portions, and even that survival/horror area inside that rickety town. Plus there were classic archetypes from Escape from NY like the gang who force arena fights. Then there's even a religious cult. Awesome homages to classic adventures in my mind.
… While the too eager shifting of setting (survival/stealth/horror) was actually one of the downsides for me, hehe! It's my main issue with the game: It became too soon too much of an amusement park, or a "game" (in the traditional sense of the word), at the expense of the story. I know not all agree with me there though.
What made it great for me was in particular the weapons and their handling. That was world class, second to none.
But how about the artwork! Everything from the shapes of the buildings to the outfits, the vehicles, the entire world. It had loads of class and personality. Each map told a story of their own, just in the environment. You looked around you, details like items in a room, marks on the ground, all those things that created a whole.
The game had a definite, unique soul. I loved that.

Really, from the demo I played of Res3 it felt and looked good, but I just didn't want to purchase it out right as I was waiting for Battlefield 3.
Anyway, I hope for the Vita guys this edition is just as good. I agree with World!
Q!
"play.experience.enjoy"
That was impressive! I will definitely be buying this for the Vita. However, I still haven't played Resistance 2 which I own, but haven't gotten to it yet. So I am guessing I will have to beat R2 and R3 before this game. Maybe not, since it looks like the Fireman is a new character. Those axe deaths look sweet! I really enjoyed R1 so I don't what my problem is 🙁 Just need to get to it!
If im not mistaken it takes place during the first days of the invasion. I wouldnt even know where to place it ?
Damn that's ill!
I think the Vita should launch a campaign as THE portable FPS machine (once there's enough titles). Grab that crazy CoD market and run with it.
I'm going to be the devil's advocate here: I have never really had an interest in the Resistance series. While I can see why there are many fans of these games, I've always seen Killzone as Playstation's flagship FPS franchise. Although I was impressed with the trailer here, I'm looking forward to what a killzone vita title will bring to the table.
Resistance isn't for everyone but the review scores here and a few other places feel very accurate to me.
I agree, I feel Killzone is the flagship FPS title for the Playstation brand. Give me Killzone Vita with Brutal Melee and I will be very happy. Since the Playstation brand already has a rock solid flagship FPS it's great to see they have another great FPS along for the ride. Resistance is great and always felt like Sony's answer to Microsoft's Gears of War.
My sentiments exactly Crusader, the overall enemy design and plot of Resistance makes it feel sorta like a first-person Gears. Killzone may have the "macho guys" archetype in its characters, but I think the universe is more interesting.
I can't wait to get my hands on this game. Resistance 3 campaign was awesome. I hate the amount of updates to play online. Insomnia should have taken care of it before it release the game. Resistance is my favorite fps. Burning skies is looking really good.
This looks really cool. (thats coming from a guy who isn't really a fan of Resistance, lol)
