Why Did Bungie Want Destiny To Be A Third-Person Title?

This is interesting, I think. All the more so considering the developer's history.

According to a video interview with Game Informer (as cited by Shack News ), the anticipated Destiny actually began its life as a third-person action game. Here's what Bungie technical art director Ryan Ellis said:

"We actually were at one point third-person only. We wanted to make a kick-ass action game, and we decided first-person was the right place to do that."

Ellis added that there are a few third-person elements left in the game, as they're "important for the gameplay." Basically, that's when you can show off all the "cool moves and the cool armor you get." However, what's interesting is that this shared-world shooter was initially conceived of as a third-person title; remember, Bungie made the iconic Halo franchise for the Xbox platform for years. So, the intriguing question is, why did they change their minds? What prompted the shift in view?

Maybe they first embarked on the project with an eye to spreading their wings and trying something completely new. That's not to say Destiny isn't new, but third-person changes the whole gameplay structure. Then, either they reached a point in the design process where it just made more sense for the game to be a FPS, or they realized that third-person just wasn't their forte and, as a safety measure, went back to what they knew.

Either way, they probably made the right decision.

Because dem salez.

With the rise of the FPSs this gen, I would say the reason is because they know that FPSs will sell well. Experimenting with something they are unfamiliar with may have not been a good idea from a business perspective to them, I believe. They already know the FPS formula, so it kind of makes sense.

3rd person is the best way to make the most ass-kicking-est games so that makes no sense. From third person there's a ton more you can do and see than in first person. It was probably hella hard to make that happen in an MMO. Sharing a big old world full of missions is going to be easier online in first person, plus that's where their experience is.

Agreed. They probably found they couldn't do it at the level of which consumers have become accustomed to and went back to what they know. I would much rather it have been third person, especially if they have any hand-to-hand fighting. That's why I still play UT3 on my PS3 to this day, the game is just done right.

one thing that really worries me about bungie, they just seem to be going for change because the sake of change.
its ironic they leave M$ after all those years and all that success citing change, trying something different, as the reason.
then they go do destiny which looks oh so identical to it!
