Bungie: Destiny Defies Genre Labeling

What is Destiny ? FPS? MMO? Action/RPG? A hybrid of all those genres?

Even the developer isn't really sure. During the latest Bungie Weekly update , the studio was asked if they ever get tired of people labeling Destiny an MMO.

In response, the designer didn't really answer and in fact, they welcome the labeling debate with open arms:

"Not at all. Do you guys ever get tired of us insisting it's not an MMO? Debate about this game is always fun, and we welcome it. The ideas that are shaping Destiny come from a lot of different places. We're drawing the best elements from experiences we love. Like an MMO, our game will compel you to explore."

You'll embody a character that evolves on that journey. Unlike an MMO, the entire experience is built around heart-pounding action that you'll see through the eyes of your hero. Ultimately, we're looking forward to knowing how you describe Destiny, once you've played it."

For now, it's feeling more like an MMO or RPG-type, as Bungie is planning to let users customize a character from scratch. They said the "essential experience is bringing a character to life, and earning the rewards that will make you a legend." At the same time, the first-person shooter format can't be ignored, and we have to remember that – supposedly – there are stories to be told out there in the vastness.

It certainly does defy any specific genre title, that's for sure. But a lot of games are doing that these days; the lines between genres get blurrier with every passing generation, primarily because better technology simply allows developers to do more with any given production.

Destiny? No it's probably great, I'm just skeptical that it will be this next level stuff they keep hinting at. Probably a good online FPS.

And since when has there ever been a good online FPS.

Those who want to look at Destiny from a base level, it is a MMOFPS, which hasn't really been done before.

What they are doing with the game, is what I think of when I think 'next-gen'.

I am excited to play this game because it looks to mold some of the best aspects of many genres. Plus it's from bungie so it should be pretty good.

For the sake of doing something better than the norm I hope Bungie succeeds. It's a real ambitious game. Not sure if it's something I could get into myself. But idk.

I like the look of it so far too. I hope they have splitscreen co op. It should definitely be possible for almost every game this generation if developers want to do it. Bring back the proper social side of gaming!

Splitscreen co-op is a thing of the past. It was from a time where playing online wasn't possible or popular.

Hardly any games feature it now, and that will continue to decrease.

Sorry to say 🙁

Looks amazing, just wish they would stop releasing such small tidbits of info.
