Sony “Very Comfortable” With Year-End PS4 Sales Predictions

With the PlayStation 4 launch mere days away, SCEA CEO Jack Tretton is prepared to be plenty confident.

The Sony boss told Bloomberg that the PS4 shouldn't have any problem meeting the sales prediction of 3 million units by year's end. Many analysts have expected that number, and Tretton says his company is "very comfortable with it."

He added that Sony will have "adequate" supplies of the PS4 throughout the holiday season, and they're sticking with the original fiscal year projection of 5 million. The company's fiscal year ends on March 31, 2014, by the way. Then he repeated something we've all heard before:

"This is a marathon, not a sprint, but getting out to a nice start is a good thing. That hurdle has been cleared. We're very, very confident we're in great shape."

I honestly believe the reason Sony keeps saying that is because they keep proving to be 100% correct. If you look at the overall performance of each PlayStation platform beginning with the original PS1, you will see that indeed, it was a marathon. Perhaps the best example of this is the PS4's predecessor, which some reactionaries pronounced DOA back in 2006.

They haven't been wrong yet, even though most people have no idea that PS3 sold more units despite being late and largely reliable. So I have no reason to doubt em now. Plus there's all that tremendous interest.

I hope they can increase the production, as I pre ordered only 20 days ago and the shop said I'd get the PS4 only mid january. But I don't want the production to rush and have hardware failures too …
