Okay, Ready At Dawn, But What Do You Mean By “Better?”

In the eyes of many, The Order: 1886 was a disappointment. Not my eyes but the reality is that many gamers and critics just didn't like it.

Perhaps this prompted a recent quote from Ready at Dawn boss Andrea Pessino on Twitter . He says that next time, the team will make sure to make a "better game." This statement is accompanied by some impressive strength training.

Okay, firstly, I hope the team has read – or will now read – my review. Secondly, I'd really like to know what Pessino means by "better." Should the next game have better AI, more incentive to replay the adventure, and fewer QTEs (or QTE segments that have a bit more depth)? Yep. I'd say these are all elements that can be improved and I doubt many would disagree. But if you say "better" and you mean a complete restructuring of your vision, we've got a problem.

I know everyone hates linear these days and the more extreme the linearity, the more people bash it. Calling it "outdated" is not only incorrect but insulting to those who wish to tell a quality story; it's merely a different style of adventure and it's perfectly legitimate. It seems like every single new game on earth is open-world or, at the very least, has significant open-world/sandbox tendencies. Even the new Uncharted will be more open. None of this is necessary, in the first place, and in point of fact, openness doesn't automatically increase the quality of a game.

Contrary to popular belief, a story-driven linear quest can be every bit as good as any open-world game in existence and very often, we get vastly superior stories out of linear adventures. There's a very good reason for that. So, if Pessino is talking about simply ditching the "old-fashioned" structure of The Order and bowing to industry pressure that speaks more to widespread attention deficit problems than to gamer intelligence, I won't be pleased. I would also like to point out that the cut-scenes in that game would actually be considered short when compared to some of the CGI- and FMV-heavy titles of yesteryear.

Anyway, even if we don't get a sequel to The Order: 1886 , I sure hope Pessino and Co. stick with an idea that, if done correctly, can be amazing.

Critics are partly to blame but at the end of the day the ones that decide anything are the gamers.

Sure, there were aspects of The Order that should not be ignored such as the vast amount of QTEs but I loved the story, the graphics and the voice acting in the game. If they would have learned from The Last of Us (gameplay wise), Ready at Dawn may have had this year's game of the year.

It was so well told and I think that's exactly the kind of thing people of today hardly factor into their review. Like the flaws throw that out the window.

Man I wish they could give a hint about if 1887 will ever exist. Many great franchises had started with a sketchy first game. You just make them better and Sony has the resources to do it. People will wonder how they had the balls to put more money into the franchise. …counts for somethin'

I personally enjoyed the game. But $60??? Idk I also hated hated hated the sections that forced you to move at a crawl, but I thoroughly loved the atmosphere and story. The female character in the Order resembles Syndicate's female lead.

Pretty much this. They just need to make the game bigger, longer and added more variety in the gameplay. Maybe some platforming or puzzle solving.

The game had good machaincs, looked great, cool characters, nice atmosphere and voice acting but it took control away from the player way too often. I didn't even mind the QTE's but when there was a break in gameplay for a cut scene every 20 minutes of gameplay, it made the game feel a lot more like a tech demo than an actual game that cost $60. There's virtually zero replay value once you platinum it. And it was and easy platinum too.

agree about control, it often did feel you might as well turn off the controller or just push the stick forward with one finger while eating a cheese danish with your other hand. Wasn't enough to make me mad, but it was a certain amount of Star Wars Senate going on we didn't need.

I enjoyed the order. Having a level count though as walking round a table I did find weird. I was like that's short.

I don't mind qtes as I love God Of War. I loved Heavy Rain can't wait for that to come to ps4 and the other one beyond two souls.

Potential is there but it's far from a proper game imo. It just needs more gameplay and variety. I applaud the critics and the gamers. This game needs a good wake up call. I'm sorry, linearity is far from the problem here. It needs to be a better " game." So they're right on that at least.

I think it was ten dollars a week ago, stay on your toes for more flash sales after Xmas when Sony will expect more people to have the system.

Unless he wanted "disc-based" only.

And then he could always keep an eye out in Gamefly's new & used PS4 sections too.

BTW, did you guys know that those Red Box rental kiosk's also sell current used games too????
But……I'm not sure if they come with their right cases, cover art, and/or manuals(if they had one originally).

Keep an eye on Gamefly. They do great at selling used games. I've seen Order 1886 a number of times well under $20.
Sure it may be 2015's biggest letdown-remember every Sony fan at the time was waiting for their defacto bragging rights title-by the industries' reckoning and likely Sony's wallet, but it's still dang great to see and experience what the PS4 can do, especially for $20!

I haven't played the Order yet as I had not purchased the PS4 until now for myself for xmas and my birthday. The Order was one of the first games I wanted to buy to play over the holidays, Second Son alongside it, and for $20 its a good deal I am sure. But I might have bought it anyway as the trailers sold me even if it was more in price.

I likened the Order to Mirror's Edge, a game I thought was the most distinctive last generation and made me want more. When I think of PS3 I think of Mirrors Edge along with Sony exclusives. It was critically bashed by reviewers and gamers, but I loved it and wanted a sequel. Its coming this gen be it open world, but the trailers for the new Mirrors Edge have me cautiously excited as it seems they built on what made the original so good.

I hope the same for the Order, some changes for the better but not riping the soul out of the game. Just built upon it with improvements.

Here's hoping and Merry Christmas all.

Keep playing! I will with my PS4. Woohoo!

Was a damn good You Tube play, back in the release day maybe if the game was 20 bucks I would bought it, but at 60 with the first legit PS4 exclusive Bloodborne being a few days to get released? nah.

They need to make the game more interactive, bigger and ffs I don't mind QTE but in a game like this one please don't do this again! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMdmkhAwIKM

I finally played the game last week. I really liked it until it ended all of a sudden. I agree with the other criticisms too. Fewer o and/or better qte's. A fleshed out melee system would be great too. Believe it or not, I think they should look at resident evil for and five for inspiration. Especially five. Not for story (God no!!!) But for replay value. There were so many fun unlockables.

Yeah I wanted more, and I assume the creators felt the game would be continued as most creators do.

They can do anything so as long as it looks incredible.

I love great tech showcase titles from time to time.
I just got Ryse from Steam for $6 today and it's freak'n gorgeous. It's like XO's version of Order 1886!
