We Just Have To Ask: Is Platinum The Right Studio For Nier 2?

I love Platinum Games .

Platinum is bad-ass; they've made some of the most seriously impressive titles in recent memory, as far as I'm concerned. They just never seem to produce a product that's any less than good, and most are great.

I had my reservations about Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance but it turned out to be a really solid action game, and as it was a spin-off anyway, I saw no reason to get all up in arms about it. Now, Bayonetta on PS3 was a letdown, technically, but the Xbox 360 version was excellent and the game boasted the single most intricate, rewarding action mechanic I think I've ever seen. And hell, Vanquish was just a freakin' blast.

However, it's also a fact that certain studios are better suited for certain projects, and I still wonder if Platinum is the right place for a Nier sequel. We recently heard the anticipated follow-up is being developed almost entirely at Platinum HQ , with only a little help from Square Enix. Original developer Cavia is out of the picture, of course. I have no doubt Platinum can make the new game look a lot better (the original's only significant failing was in the visual department) but it's the gameplay focus that worries me.

It's true that Nier , which I really loved, was an action/RPG. But it was indeed a role-playing game first and I just can't help thinking that the focus will shift with Platinum. Aren't we all expecting them to put the action first, and make it so your dexterity and capability with a controller will dictate your success as opposed to the RPG side of planning and micromanagement? And what about that great world we could explore? Platinum mostly just does linear structures, right?

I just hope against hope that Nier 2 actually is an action/RPG…and Platinum doesn't simply cut out the "RPG" part. Yeah, them working on Transformers: Devastation makes total sense. But this one, I don't know.

Hello no, but better Nier 2 than no Nier 2 I guess.

This does show that Square Enix could be back on the ACSHUN FUR ALL!!!! pathway.

Yes, I really want the RPG element to come before the action. Taro Yoko, the director of the original Nier is on board so all I can do is hope for the best.

That they're doing a second one at all gives me reason to be optimistic.

So the developers that said they're not into sequels are making a sequel to a game they didn't make, but we still don't have a Vanquish 2 on the radar?

I've wondered about that myself.

Blame Sega for that. They can't even afford to make a sequel to 'Alien: Isolation', let alone keep the lights on in their studios at night.

Pretty pathetic really. Sega was once such a fantastic publisher of great games and now a shell of their former self.

Like World said better than no Neir. They do action well, I just hope they nail the RPG aspect and deliver a good story. The soundtrack better be as good as the first.

I just want the gameplay to be as varied as the original nier and I want the story to be on point.

Obviously the twist of the original game was huge and they wont be able to do something like that but still a good story with cool characters is all I want.

The RPG elements, well like I said if the story is good and the gameplay is varied and fun then I don't care if the RPG elements are lighter than the first game.

But to be honest the first games RPG elements were very light, I played through it again earlier this year with my friend and being good at dodging was more important than being a high level. The RPG system was quite light in the first game, it made a difference but it wasn't that huge.

Actually weapons and upgrading your weapon was the most important "RPG" aspect of the game.

I'm confident that with the original NIER director on board that they will find a good balance.

Nier like Heavenly Sword and Enslaved unexpectedly turned out to be good games. I played the three as video game rentals and I was hoping for ok titles and the three were quite good. A new developer could bring misfortune or revival of the franchise. Let's hope it is for the better.
