Yes, we're finally getting the Final Fantasy VII Remake , after about twelve years of begging. Despite what Square Enix says , I'm pretty sure they're going to ruin it.
But put that aside for a minute: If you had your choice, which classic role-playing game would get a remake? As a follow-up question, how would you want the game to be remade? Would you basically just want a graphical upgrade and no change to the gameplay, or would you want a complete overhaul?
I've been thinking about this and while Legend of Dragoon was atop my list for a while, I'm leaning more toward either Chrono Trigger or Chrono Cross . The long-rumored Chrono Break game never happened and really, it's the one RPG franchise I most miss these days. On top of which, the concepts within these titles would make an excellent transition to modern-day gaming. I mean, Chrono Cross had a ton of playable characters to recruit, and the time-traveling aspect is a definite draw (no matter what generation we're in). A remake of either would be epic.
I also thought about Phantasy Star but I was never quite enamored with that series and I never felt as strongly about Secret of Mana , either. But I really miss the good ol' days of GameArts during the PlayStation era, because I'd love to see a new Lunar or Arc the Lad . Oh, and Parasite Eve could be awesome if remade properly (as an action/RPG and not an action game ala Resident Evil like the sequels). All pipe dreams, I know, but that's part of the fun. 🙂
Legend of Dragoon, don't even have to think about it. Aside from the obvious graphical update, I'd want complete voice acting, and just a couple of tweaks to the gameplay. Mainly giving the archers additions, and a bit more variety in equipment. Oh and (this one may seem weird for an old jrpg fan) remove the world map. Normally I like the world map, but in LoD it served no purpose, areas were connected through linear paths anyways. You could see the prairie you were just in from the entrance to the limestone cave, there was really no need for a tiny world map area between them.
P.S. Do you absolutely have to be so negative? At least wait for some solid proof that they'll ruin it.

"Dramatic changes" to the gameplay.
That's the only proof I need.
Also after years of disappointment how do you expect a Final Fantasy fan to react? Preparing yourself for yet another let down is the only logical thing to do.
LOL! I was thinking of The Legend of Dragoon right before reading it in your article Ben xD
A complete graphical and gameplay overhaul is fine by me, as long the story stays intact exactly as it was.
Vandal Hearts
No RPG I've played needs the technology of today, or last gen's for that matter, as much as Xenogears wanted to have back in the day.
They could take the same game play and story and apply modern tech to it, upgrading the controls, camera, and graphics and it would all make the experience better in every sense. Because sadly the controls camera and graphics can be atrocious as it is now.
If I had to choose an FF it would be FFVI or FFVIII. Both of which I liked more than VII.
Seeing that Suikoden II has best jrpg status of all time by many, it would seem fitting for a triumphant return there.

Suikoden II doesn't need a remake. If anything, the first Suikoden could be remade with no changes beyond using S2's graphics and it would be perfect.
I think the original Suikoden could use an overhaul in the combat. It was too basic imo compared to other RPG's on the platform.
They should remade/remake Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance for ps4, that game kick so much ass…
Really? No takers for Bahamut Lagoon? Though it wouldn't be ideal, I'd even take it being put out only on mobile (though Vita would be fantastic).
was that on PS1?
FFVII … properly.
Dreamer, you know you are a dreamer
Well can you put your hands in your head, oh no!
I said dreamer, you're nothing but a dreamer

Don't know why that song just popped into my head…
I could go for a ps4 Chrono Cross or BG Dark Alliance. FF Tactics would be hard to update since the older graphics are still a big part of its charm.
Chrono Trigger. With what ever engine they're making Dragon Quest games with these days. Art done by Akira Toriyama of course.
Final Fantasy IX. No need for a remake just make a HD update with trophy support 🙂
If they could bring 'Dragon Warrior VII' up to the standards of 'VIII', that would be magnificent. Still two of my absolute favorite games of all time, but the latter is such a huge progression of the series' formula that even the 3DS version of 'VII' doesn't match up to 'VIII.'
Definitely Legend of Dragoon.
I'd love a Chrono Trigger remake but I do not trust Square as they are right now.
Without a doubt, Final Fantasy VIII. That is my favorite game of all time and it's only one where I've put countless hours into. If they remade Final Fantasy VIII, I would be nerding out right now.
What he said ^
Legend of Dragoon…. yes plz
Legend of Dragoon is and will always be at the top of my list when this question is asked. I've been pining for a sequel/prequel/remake/reboot since the end credits rolled the first time I played oh so many moons ago.
The game was set up perfectly for a prequel. I'd love to play through the story of Rose, Zieg and the previous dragoons in the Dragon Campaign. Dragoons vs Winglies, Dragons vs Virages. Could be so awesome.
The battle system was great but I'd be fine if they modernized it. Even if they made it a little more action oriented, or faster paced for today's ADD generation. As long as they kept the Additions mechanic, I love Additions. Volcano!!!
The one game I'd like to see remade is Vagrant Story. The gameplay in the original gave me a headache (fighting battles of attrition was wearing – hitting bosses for 1 to 2 hp at a time!).
I'd like to see not just a visual upgrade, but adjusting the gameplay as well. All the other games mentioned here are already fun as they are – VS could pull in a whole new group of fans if remade properly.
XENOGEARS!!!!
So damn good.
If I had to choose an FF, I'd go with FFVI since VII is already being remade
Also, Ben… any idea if PSXE is going to add an option for user reviews of PS4 games? It's currently not an option.
DQ VIII, graphics update only.
The Cell Shading looks pretty good already, but you're right. They could easily tidy up the pixels and give it a higher FPS. Would look nice.
