Ubisoft Explains The Challenge Of Going Rogue In The Division

In the survival game, you really need to work together.

But if you succumb to selfishness, you can try and take everything for yourself. In other words, you can go Rogue.

In the Player vs. Player portion of the anticipated open-world action/strategy game The Division , players have the option of turning on their teammates. As Ubisoft showed off during E3, this involves killing your allies and stealing their loot. Then, everyone in the PvP space will start coming after you.

But it's a little more complex than that, as the publisher explained on the UbiBlog . The more players you kill when on the run, the higher your bounty will become and the more difficult it will be for you to survive. Said senior game designer Matthieu Delisle:

"You climb the levels of Rogue by killing other players. If you are a level one Rogue, you’re Rogue for two minutes. But if you kill more players, you’re Rogue for a longer period of time. Every time you kill a player you refresh that counter and it increases up to five minutes.

If you manage to survive your Rogue status – which is pretty difficult because all the players want to kill you and can see you on the map – then you receive your own bounty. So you can progress in the Dark Zone by being a Rogue, but it’s pretty risky and difficult."

Oh, you just know people are gonna keep trying it. But will you…? After a delay, The Division is now set to release on March 8 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

Agreed. I really hate the implementation of this stealing from your mates. May put me off this game altogether. 🙁

I think it is a clever mechanic. It sounds like it will be hard to survive long.

They had something like this in a game called APB Reloaded on the PC, and the whole server would end up chasing down the criminals and they pretty much never lasted more than a minute.

If you can see people on the map in this game it will be hard to hide so I don't think its going to ruin anything. Also they can patch it if it doesn't work properly 🙂

Well my name should answer whether or not i'll try it 🙂 I like the idea and hopefully they build enough around it to make it fun, interesting, and challenging enough that people want to do it from time to time.

I firmly believe that these types of mechanics are not only good to online gaming but essential. As vato said above he/she believes in hurts but i see the opposite. In fact i believe it creates better games/communities and i come to this conclusion from experiences with other games that have similar mechanics. Trolls end up getting labelled rather quickly and groups, clans, and corporations become tighter because of these systems.

I just hope it works out for the game.
