The bad news is that the project might be dead. The good news is we can stop waiting for it.
According to All Games Beta citing a status page from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, SCEA has abandoned the trademark for The Last Guardian .
It seems Sony didn't file a Statement of Use or Extension Request after the "Notice of Allowance" was issued. Sony hasn't commented on the matter; the last official update is when designer Fumito Ueda said the game was moving forward "under completely new conditions." Most assumed that to mean the title had shifted development to PlayStation 4, after it was originally unveiled in 2009 for PS3.
I think it's feasible that the game will rise again with a new title. That's pretty much our only hope right now, it seems.

I shed a tear today. I feel like my missing puppy has been dead for a while but I didn't get true confirmation until today. Good bye Mr. Waffle, I love you.

I put this in grave about 3 years ago. I'm sorry for everyone that was waiting for this
same here. once it never released for ps3, figured this game was long dead. but theres that chance it could possibly be renamed.
kinda like how se came out and said ff15 was renamed.
All this means is that they've given up on that name. After 6 years and seemingly several shifts in direction, that's hardly surprising. Every time they're asked Sony has said it's moving ahead, so I'm not writing it off yet.
Remember the first time we saw Shadow of the Colossus? It was a multiplayer game. Things change.

I'm not writing it off until they say it is cancelled. They could just be changing the name.
I remember everyone around here saying Versus 13 was never coming out and look whats coming out possibly this year 😀 FF15 but it was originally Versus.
I think the same thing is happening here. It shifted on to PS4 and they changed the name.
Here's hoping for just a name change! I don't really even think about this game anymore, but if it ever does come out, it will be a nice surprise. I've had it pre-ordered since February 10, 2012 🙂
It would be sad news but I admit I gave up on the game ever coming out. I still love ICO and SotC and the good times playing them.
Time to let it go. If if comes to fruition later, it would be a nice surprise.
Keep playing!
Well that was a waste of money.
and there goes the reason I got a PS3!
Shoot man 6 years ago we both wasted $400 US.
Oh well. 😉

Wait, you mean it wasn't dead already?
I thought this game died 3 years ago.
And while we're at it, where the **** is Agent?
Sony really should just announce a game got cancelled instead of just playing the quiet game.
what really pisses me off though is they still say its in development, and they still refuse to say anything else.
I'm sorry but after 6 years you kinda need to do more than say no its still in development for people to believe you!
fine its still in development SHOW US SOMETHING!!!!!!!!!!!
surely after SEVEN PLUS years in development, SURELY THERE HAS TO BE SOMETHING YOU CAN SHOW!
either that, or admit it, say sorry the game was not heading where we wanted to we pulled the plug.
nothing more insulting than when you treat your fans like they were born yesterday!
come on, at least have a minute amount of respect for us!!!!!!
Why should they change name when apparently the current name have so much recognition amongst PS fans?
current name attached to "wait" and "failure" and "heartbreak"?
Called this years ago.
How could you not know where to go with The Neverending Story?
yeah i'd say thats probably the case that would only make sense base on what we know
happy gaming
