Dead Or Alive’s Top-Heavy Ladies Aren’t Going Anywhere

These days, virtual girls with unrealistic proportions are frowned upon, and the developer can expect some tough questions from the press.

With women everywhere claiming offense and those saying "it's just eye candy" branded as sexist pigs, it's difficult to produce games like Dead or Alive without getting a significant amount of flak. Well, Team Ninja Creative Director Tom Lee has just one thing to say:

Too bad. The bouncy DoA girls are here to stay.

In a recent GameZone interview , Lee addressed the situation:

"I tell ya, this is a question that pops up a lot, and I've personally answered it in many different ways. This is our position, it's not like we're ignorant and we don't know what's going on. We're very conscious with what happened, and the Gamergate issues of last year, and objectification of women in entertainment, misogyny, all of it, we're very aware."

Lee adds that the characters in DoA aren't meant to be realistic in the first place; it's all about fantasy, from the jiggling chests to the ridiculous moves they pull off:

"However, when you look at a game like DOA, from the minute you turn on the game, it's in a very other-world, fantasy type of environment. I don't think it takes much to figure out that this has very little to do with a real world. Our women, our males, our environments, are not relatable to real people. So in that sense, in our theme of fantasy, we feel like we have absolutely every right to show off beautiful characters and how we see fit."

Lastly, Lee made it plain that none of the women are being abused or "treated unfairly" in the DoA games; everyone's on an even keel (they're all getting the crap kicked out of them) and he reminded everyone that in fact, the women are just as powerful as the men.

What do you say to all this?

I'm fine with proportions etc. That's been part of DOA since the beginning.

I do think some gaming sites can at least try to portray news about the game without having to show bikini clad imagery every time. And yes, Team Ninja really is trying to milk the erotic DLC. That bothers me about it. DOA has always had problems overcoming the stigma that it's a perverts fighting game and it's not hardcore enough to be taken seriously. It's out of balance with it's image right now. (but sadly that's probably what keeps DOA alive these days)

But I'm not complaining about this article and it's picture because it actually fits.

BTW: There's a killer flash sale going on right now.

EDIT: The whole cast though was remodeled for DOA5. Characters like that Kasumi up there has been made to look more realistic. Sure. Some are proportioned crazy but characters like Ayane and Kasumi etc aren't as cartoony in proportion as they used to be.

Might as well use the sex to sell it if it is there.

I'll be the first to highlight if I see unfairness in a game, racial, sexism etc

I was delighted to see Lara overhauled and made more realistic. Her goals seem far more believable and deep now, making her less angry and more profound, less sexually objectified and more idolised.

DOA on the other hand I personally don't see the point in changing and anything related to the DOA universe, because if we got started with female characters, we'd have to then get started on their portrayal of black characters, lack of Indian characters, lack of this, lack of that. Even the males are ridiculous.

It's supposed to be a pervy none too serious fighter and it's always been known that way, thus the lame plots. Half its audience are hardcore DOA fighting EVO champions male and female, the other half are casuals who don't care too much about taking it too seriously and just want to play a game where you can play as a cute girl in a bunny outfit with jiggle physics.

We already lost Lara's big proportions. Keep the DOA Girls as they are.

Lara's made sense though, they were going for 'realistic' and gritty in that game.

I like new Lara, still packing DDs and a little bit of juice in the Bass section to hang onto.

It all depends on the context, if it was meant to be a gritty realistic game then it would be a little inappropriate which is why I agree with what they did with Lara Croft in TR, the unrealistic body proportions would not have fit with the atmosphere and tone of that game but this exactly the type of game that cartoonishly large boobs are meant for.

Thank god and pass the the 1st amendment. *Takes a vapor puff* This sh!t is enough, fantasies are for sale here people. It is not for one of us to degradate the other for what they enjoy in a non-real fantasy world.

I applaud anyone who fights for their right to be an oblivious neckbeard in a world that tolerates oblivious neckbeards less and less with each passing year.

We live in a world now that's way too PC. And if men say it we're sexist pigs. Well equal rights means men can have an opinion on over sized jugs and not be sexist pigs. As it turns out I'm more of a regular sized jugs person myself but if people like buying games with big un's, I don't see the problem.

If I ever find myself waking up in the morning and the most stressing thing I can think of to ruin my day is the size of boobs in DOA, I think I'd chalk that one up to a slow news day and go back to bed.

well i guess you can say some things wil never change but also isn't there freedom of expression that everyone raves about nows a days but is it just for everything except gaming like some sort of double standard but what ever its good the devs are standing up for their product and like they said its not suppose to be real so whats the problem, i don't see a problem really, i mean really if ur gunna critise DOA then you could say the same thing of 50 shades of grey just saying wel what ever i doubt anyones gunna take any notice anyway

happy gaming
