PSXE Poll Update: Call Of Duty Still In A Downward Spiral

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare was a step in the right direction, and some will say it was also a glorious return to form.

Still, the majority of our readers don't believe it was enough to save the ailing franchise. Most said the series is "still doomed" despite the relative warm reception of the most recent installment.

Perhaps the readers aren't wrong, either, as the sales numbers didn't smash any new records and in fact, the sales performance of the blockbuster franchise continues to decline. Of course, this doesn't mean the IP is going to disappear, but it could mean Activision might have to struggle to rejuvenate CoD…in spite of Sledgehammer's great effort.

This week, it's time to start the voting for the 2014 PSXE Reader's Choice Game of the Year Award. You've got until the end of the year to vote for the best of the best this year. If you don't see your favorite on the list; sorry, but it'll fit only ten titles. 😉

I think Borderlands the Pre-Sequel – despite being last gen console only – is better than 50% of the games on this list. Possibly better than 75 percent of them.

CoD despite a decline in sales, has a larger following that most any game in the industry. If anything it will plateau over the next few years rather than continue to decline. At least at some point it will maybe later than sooner. So it's not going any where. We really won't know what this year's game does for the series until next year. Unfortunately Sledgehammer wanted and needed to make a statement and succeeded. I think IW and Trey arch will continue in their ways.

'Advanced Warfare' was, as you say, a step in the right direction. But mostly because it felt like the first 'Call of Duty' in half a decade to not be mostly phoned-in.

As for Game of the Year, I think it's clear (to me, anyway) that 'Dragon Age: Inquisition' was overall the best experience of 2014. There's not really even another serious contender as far as I'm concerned.

I really liked Shadow of Mordor and Child of Light but if I would of played Dragon Age or Far Cry I may put those ahead as I don't think neither COL or Mordor were that great of games tbh.

Personally from the games on the polls from which I played I may give it to Child of Light.

Strange, I genuinely think this is the first CoD I have been interested in since… well ever really. I'm interested to see how the games handles the notion of near-future tech in war and how intimidating it can be. That might just be my own thoughts building it up too much but it's more thought I have had about CoD than any other previous title.

As for my GotY… Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII… I know, I know! But it's been a really slow year… The only other games I've played are Ground Zeroes, which being a prologue doesn't count and FFX/X-2 HD & KH2.5 HD, I can't count HD re-releases in this category so LR:FF13 it is. I did enjoy the game, despite having a far to heavy focus on side quests, however I found the concept for The Last One sidequest utter genius and really enjoyed participating in that. The story is half and half, I enjoyed it most when encountering known characters in the series, them moments were fantastic, but the ending… well… it was beyond cliche… I still think the series should have concluded at FFXIII-1

I really liked Lightning Returns too enough to platinum it.

of course most say its doomed, come on they could release the next uncharted and cross out the name and write CoD on it and people will still be singing its death!
haven't you got the memo?
its cool to hate CoD!

as for GoTY i gotta go for wolfenstein the new order.
not only is it a amazing looking game, not only does it prove shooters can offer a compelling story, but it also has great game design and allot of depth in how it can be played in the level design.
not to mention its oozing old school, and we all know old school shooters are the best ones out there!
its not very often that you can get a new studio working on such a iconic old school franchise and they manage to capture all the magic and essence of what the franchise.
but machine have done exactly that, in fact it turned out better than what it probably would of under id today!
god how it hurts to say that, what has become of one of this industries godfathers!?

I won't vote since I still don't own a PS4. My gut tells me Dark Souls 2 might be the best on that list, though.

Since I put over 200 hours in Dark Souls… that was an easy vote.

yeah i'm not surprise of that around here i think COD needs to take more of a back seat for a few years other wise this will probably be the case they it will be forced into a smaller position weither they like it or not i think that will be the case as of right now atleast
