Ben-DutkaEven though Battlefield: Hardline and Evolve got pushed into 2015, there are still several high-profile shooters on the immediate horizon.
Some will argue that the holiday will come down to Destiny vs. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare and that's probably accurate. But here's an argument supporting Bungie's anticipated title:
I believe that due to its MMO-style structure, Destiny can hook gamers for the long run. It's in that role-playing style of progression that gamers often lose themselves; it's what keeps them coming back for more. Sure, you can rank up and get all sorts of new equipment in CoD but it just isn't the same. When playing Destiny , one gets the feeling that we're only scratching the surface, and that tip of the iceberg is already a heady experience. Imagine what Bungie will do over the course of the next few years to build upon that experience…
As great as the multiplayer will almost undoubtedly be in Advanced Warfare , it'll still feel somewhat old-fashioned to me. The future is freedom-oriented, persistent-world competition and we're seeing exactly that with Destiny . The bottom line is that with one game, I glimpse the future; with the other, I see a spruced-up version of an old-fashioned form of multiplayer competition.

I think competitive multiplayer games are just as intoxicating as cooperative MMO's.
We can just look to League of Legends and Call of Duty (or just the crap storm of online competitive play over the years) as evidence of that. But, yea, either way they both can be huge time sinks.
also, I do think that MMO'ish quality may be the eventual demise of my interest in Destiny.
As soon as the game starts feeling like level building grind sessions will be when I know it's time to shelf-it or sell-it… that was exactly how WoW died for me. My free time is more valuable to me than that.
But I do think before I reach that burnout point, I'll have gotten well over a full game's worth of value out of Destiny… and being popular and an Activision game and all, I don't expect major MSRP cuts for Destiny anytime soon either. So signing up now is as good a time as any.
EDIT: and I do think this will be unpopular with MMO lovers, but I hope Destiny receives from the ground up sequels instead of semi-annual DLC all of the time. Per the usual MMO style. I'd be much more excited for future Destiny installments where the game engine and game design receives complete overhauls. You'd also have complete new characters to play as (Arrgh Temjin you're NUTS!) I'd be willing to pay $60 each time for that.

btw, as a point of reference for how insanely huge League of Legends is, IGN reported back in January the game has 27 million players daily. Yea, DAILY.
This harmonizes with what I see at my univeristy's game cafe. Rows and rows of computers with people playing it.
Remember this is the game that gives out millions of dollars to winning teams at tournaments.

btw, one of my respected instructors said at school, that according to our school's research the number one reason why students (as in adults) don't pass classes or drop out without degrees is due to having a habitual video game obsession. He also spoke of studies produced by other universities that said the avg IQ of an 18 year old (or something like that) in the 1970's (or thereabouts) was much higher than the average college level student enrolled today at the age of 25.
What a psychopath, there aren't that many actual game addicts. I doubt it makes up for all college dropouts.
Who said anything about all college drop outs?
A number one reason can be looked at as a percentage from a set of contributing indicators. It's possible that the "number one" reason could be below 10% of total drop outs or failing courses.

Plus, after seeing the new CoD's gameplay, it's also trying to go sci-fi, but isn't nearly as sci-fi as Destiny. But it's definitely not non-sci-fi enough to make you think it's not trying to be.
Its still a very different game. COD is a lot faster and is a twitch shooter.
I don't see any reason why FPS fans wouldn't want to play both – I know I get bored playing thesame game all the time and need to switch it up.
Cuz there will be no other good FPS this year, and probably next.

You're completely right – but I prefer Far Cry 4. Not only will the setting in FC4 will be better but the story as well.
In this (and last) generation, gamers are too enthusiastic about playing together or against each other and showing off what they're made of. I may be a little old school where I prefer to get lost in the game all by myself without having any interuptions from others.
For me the title should be "why Destiny will be the only FPS you won't require… ever" and the answer is: it's THE game that will take so much of your time, you won't be able playing other great games. Yep, I have hisotry with MMORPG so I'll pass on this one:)
That's what I am looking forward to in Destiny. I am also excited for CoD Advanced Warfare. I am intrigued by the 3 year development cycle.
Can't forget about Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. It's being lost in this hype because of its release on last Gen consoles. However this game defines exactly why your supporting Destiny. In fact it's easy to argue it started this genre of play in the fps realm.
There's 2 games coming out this year that should keep me completely satisfied well into next year and that's BL and Destiny.
Yeah. This is exactly right.
However, I'm hoping that Destiny will keep me completely immersed until BL:TPS gets a PS4 version. If not, well, there's a damn good reason I still have my PS3!!!

Yeah I have no doubt Destiny will keep me entertained for a long time.
But since both are releasing almost back to back I'll have to designate time to both. I hope Borderlands does release on next Gen consoles but I haven't been convinced enough to make me hold off on it when it releases in October. Plus I don't play the game for its graphics anyways so I as well am glad I kept my PS3. I'd be kicking myself right now had I not.
I'm not holding off for a graphics upgrade – I just really really really prefer the DS4. And I bet it runs smoother on PS4 too. Hell, who am I kidding? I'll never be able to hold out that long! Lol!
Haha. You won't be able too. I actually love the DS4 also. Unfortunately I just don't think I can wait.

It's not the nly FPS i will require but since the Unreal Tournament reboot isn't coming to consoles, it's the only one i will buy.
That's an interesting and good read, Ben. If Destiny succeeds at what it attempts — early reports are that it does — it really is a glimpse of the future. Call of Duty and that style of ceaseless, arena-based competitive shooters just feel stale and last gen by comparison.
before i read this let i just say this i like the sort of MMO type games where it can be like a single player game but you can play it with other people too it's kinda like the best of both worlds for me always has been.

I still can't believe how excited I am for Destiny. I was pretty excited for Uncharted 2 and Halo 3, but not so much that I was looking for every bit of news that comes. Hell I've spent more time in the bungie forums the last few weeks than I've ever spent in others.
Usually coming up to the release of a game I know I'm going to buy I censor myself from trailers and other info. With Destiny I can't get enough. So yeah, I agree.

From what I've observed it looks like that's the plan. I don't know about complete overhauls, but definitely sequel-type retail releases.
