I mean, it's a logical assumption, isn't it?
We've waited almost this entire generation for Final Fantasy Versus XIII to arrive and it has never happened. In terms of progress reports, we've seen next to nothing from Square Enix. Very, very little.
They said they'd get back to it after Final Fantasy XIII-2 was out but lo and behold, here comes Final Fantasy XIII: Lightning Returns , with absolutely no news about Versus XIII . To top it all off, the next-generation consoles are very likely to launch later this year (it seems Sony will announce the PS4 this month) and still, not a peep from Square Enix concerning the long-anticipated piece of vaporware. Oh yes, vaporware it is until the publisher can prove the project still exists.
And if it really does still exist, wouldn't it almost have to be a next-gen title by now? Maybe that's precisely what we should've anticipated for the past year or so; maybe Square Enix has been biding their time, putting Versus XIII on the back burner so their ambitious vision can be realized by the more powerful hardware of a new generation. I suppose that's a pretty good possibility at this point and hey, it just might give the bitter FF fans some hope. I have little faith in the game in question but I've resolved never to give up on this franchise.
Perhaps if it hits the PS4 like a ton of bricks, many fans will be able to forgive and forget…
Related Game(s): Final Fantasy Versus XIII
All I could think of while reading this article was "Wow, what a god-awful console generation for the Final Fantasy franchise." And yeah, not surprised at all if FF Versus XIII is making the generation jump and will bear a new numer with it. So, meh. Just finish the damn game, S-E!
Interesting.. saving it for the PS4 could be their key reason to keep it as a PlayStation exclusive, and for the constant backshelving. Still though, I wouldn't be surprised for it to have a different title. After all, the other games that were meant for the Final Fantasy XIII compliation were later revised and renamed, with the two sequels for FFXIII to officially replace them.
One of the main reasons I bought a PS3 was in anticipation of this game.
Beginning to get used to Sqaure Enix not being able to deliver on promises though, and I lost faith in them delivering this long ago. Good thing we have developers like Level 5 providing solid JRPG's.
Agreed. I had no desire to play FF XIII after I beat the final boss. Also don't feel like playing its sequels.
On the other hand, I could not stop playing Ni no Kuni. I'm yet to get my hands on Persona 4 Golden. There's just too much backlog of games to buy and play it. I will definitely be buying it though.
Versus will be a Ps4 Launch game book it!.What better game to sell ps4's..
I want to play Versus XIII, I think. I won't go buy a PS4 just to play it though. Final Fantasy used to be a system seller for me, but not anymore.
Could be…but could end up as a ps3 swan song between now & 2016 hopefully along with TLG and Agent
One can dream
Maybe they are hoping by then people will have forgotten the "Exclusive to Playstation 3" screen image for when it comes out on PS4 and 720.
Maybe that was the strategy the whole time…
"You know what, lets make this multi-plat"
"But we've been making it for PS3. It's too good for the 360. It just won't cut it. I really with you'd listen to me."
"Hmmm… how can we get it on xbox without taking away any awesome"
"… you'd have to get them to make a new xbox…"
"I've got it! We'll just have to let them make a new xbox!"
"I miss my friends at Mistwalker."
FF vs XIII might as well be subtitled "Did Not Finish" since SE has shown an abject inability to keep their promises on this title, and for that matter FFXIV.
Actually, from my point of view, this whole generation has been a long list of broken promises from Software developer/publishers. Generally speaking these broken promises hurt PlayStation. If I were Sony, I'd have started stepping on some toes to get them to geek their promises, or make good on commitments.

or there's just nothing, since it's sitting right next to it
so good luck
How far they fall Squaresoft. SquareEnix have barely developed for the PS3 this generation… I'm sure they've made a lot of money publishing but geez.
I read the article title and thought there was actual news on this
whats a final fantasy?
I gave 'Banky' an up vote because I think he is saying 'whats a final fantasy?' because it been so long since we had a great Final Fantasy. The last great Final Fantasy game we had was X, however I feel XII was pretty good as well. So in essence I think his comment is an attempt at sarcasm, and I appreciate sarcasm.
Cheers BigT!
HA! And to think this title was one of the reason I jumped back into the game world and bought a PS3. What ever, at this point any news of a FFvsXIII release is just a bonus.
If I remember right, wasn't there meant to be some big update in January? I don't remember hearing a single thing about Versus XIII last month.
Asfor the game being on the Playstation 4, if so, I am expecting it to look a lot better than we have ever seen it. This is a game which is looking to have been developed for the entirety of this generation. I can't recall any other game taking this long. Has it been 7 years now? The last thing I saw on Versus XIII was the 2011 January trailer… In the meantime Final Fantasy XIII has simply not been delivering either, they're good games, but nothing in the league of 'Squaresoft's' Final Fantasy's. During this waiting period I have gone on to play other RPG's some which are far beyond what XIII ever delivered. S-E is simply being beat by the competition now. Something I would not dare expect back in the golden age of Squaresoft. Having played Xenoblade and soon to move on to Ni No Kuni, they really put Final Fantasy XIII to perspective, I look at Lightning Rises and compare it to them and all I can do is shake my head.
i find it hard to believe its still in development.
just nothing shown what so ever, and every time they say oh will start showing it at x time, and x time passes and they dont even comment on why it was not shown when they said it would be.
christ, $E are even worse than valve with half life 3!
if its never going to happen at least have the respect and gratitude for your fans, AND SAY SO!
not keep leading them on in hope for something that will never come!

we know how the beta plays. we know they were improving and finalizing the world map and other areas. the first time we saw stuff it looked great, the second time better. Wait, just wait.
Sogi, we've been hearing the refrain of wait, just wait, for how long now? 3-4 years? At some point you have to realize that they just don't care any more.
*facepalm*
What if…I mean really what if FFVersus doesn`t exist? What if its all a ploy to keep gamers interested in the franchise?
Stop with the damn impatient ranting. Wait, like everyone else, I am. It's not next gen, they have stated this. Don't post rumors, because in a week or so you'll probably post Square saying it's wrong anyway.
Settle. Lol
I think it's fair to be impatient with no news in years and a 6-7 year wait. Soon we'll be looking at a 10 year development cycle before long.
Most games release around 1 year if hearing an announcement.
And when two xiii sequels are announced and released in that time combined with the versus team being regularly reassigned, I think the author here is more than justified in being skeptical.
The "impatient ranting?" WTF are you talking about? Square Enix has been talking about this game for SEVEN YEARS. If you'd like to sit back and be "patient" and not question, feel free.
And by the way, saying it comes out for the next generation is hardly impatience. The next generation will probably start this year.
Ah, so Sogi is our resident SE apologist fanboy? I mean really, that's the only way I can logically explain someone jumping at Ben because of what he wrote about a game that's been promised all generation and never arrived.
FFV13 continues to grow and evolve. while all you get mad at me, call me a fanboy, and decide SE doesn't care. I don't care if the company doesn't, the workers do, and they are working. stop being impatient and ignorant to others. grow up, games take time, great games take longer.
I couldn't care less of SE, but the fact that they are scheduled to unveil information about a long term project means you should wait.
Next Gen starting this year? like Holiday season right? with 0 games announced, haven't you guys stated that next gen could come next year for the pas 2-3 years? I come here for News, Reviews and information as well, not left handed opinions founded on 2nd or 3rd hand info, or your own speculation.
So chill. lashing out at your readers because they stand against your opinion is not professional.
I must have missed the Sony countdown announcements promising the future of playstation every year for 2-3 years. lol
What great games take that long? Uncharted 2 took a couple years… Even Polyphony Digital's Gran Turismo 5 didn't take this long, and even then it wasn't like it was the be-all-end-all you are expecting.
You know what you get when you get a game that takes entire generations to be made? You get Duke Nukem Forever.
No… games that take 8+ years (it will be at least that if not more as we still have no new info) are obviously games that have lost focus and/or direction.
Name one decade-in-development game that was amazing. -ONE-.
Yes games take time… but only 2-3 years. You may have a point in regards to annualized titles, but for the most part…
Hey… did you realize that in the time it's taken Versus, we will have had all 3 Uncharteds and The Last of Us? (If we are going by what 1 company has done) And we -STILL- won't have had Versus in that time. So, you'll have to forgive me for not buying into the "great games take time" excuse.
We aren't being ignorant towards others. If I look and say, "um, why is this game taking so much longer than planned" and "why is there no new info lately?", that's not ignorant… that's observant.
And no one's mad at you… we're just chuckling a bit.
P.S. This is the longest console generation -IN HISTORY-…….. And it was announced at the beginning. lol
I think it will still come out on the PS3. A lot of great RPGs and even games came out for the PS2 when the PS3 had already been announced and even after the PS3 was out. God of War 2 came out 2007 after the PS3 had already launched. I think Yakuza 2, and Xenosaga episode 3 also came out after.
So I think honestly that it will come for the PS3 but will be kind of a swan song for the console.
Now a completely other theory, is that it is next gen and they ported it to the Agni engine and that is why when Kitase was asked about it he said it looked unlike anything we've ever seen and it was stupendous or something. I dunno it was a poor translation but basically he said the game look amazing from a graphics and gameplay standpoint.
So maybe it is being pushed into next gen. But I seriously hope it isn't.
At this point, I think so too. I will wait for E3 for further judgement. We have at least 3 big, PS3 games that don't have a release date, or even window. Metal Gear Rising, Last Guardian, and Final Fantasy Vs. XIII are some pretty ambitious games. Sony would still want to sell some PS3s after the initial launch of the PS4, as they're making profit with it, and these type of games will only help.
The PS2 sold millions and millions after the PS3 launch, so for the PS3 to do the same with the PS4, getting games like these will certainly be favorable. Also remember the quote from Sony Execs (?) about unannounced, first party and third party games that will further support the PS3 at least through 2015.
I personally don't mind if it releases for the PS3, but I can't deny how much better it would be for the game if it was ported to the PS4. I'm good either way I guess. I just want to play this game.
True xenris.
Dq8 and kingdom hearts 2 came out after the 360 and after the ps3 announcements. And final fantasy xii released a month before
At this point I don't think anyone cares about it coming out on PS3 any more. How many seriously big titles were released on Ps2 after PS3 launched? Right. So releasing FFvsXIII on PS3 right when PS4 starts arriving would seem to be a poor strategy.
I listed some big titles that released after the PS3 had launched. God of War 2 was a huge title, and I would have to look up more but I remember there being quite a few. As I didn't get a PS3 until the first price drop down to 450. So I don't know how long that was but I was still getting and playing NEW good PS2 games that were releasing fresh in that year.
I honestly want it for the PS3 more because I don't want to buy a PS4 right away. I will admit though I just want the game to release and if that means it goes to the PS4 and I never see it until way later when I get one so be it.
Sure would help PS3/Omni's fly off the shelves. This would be a sound business decision by Sony. How many gamers who were going to wait a year to buy the PS4 would flock to the stores to snatch one up during the launch if FFXIIIvs were a launch title? A huge number that's for sure! I am getting more and more excited for the PS4!
If true, it would be just sad. This game was announced pretty much around the PS3 launch window, and now it's delayed into the next generation? At least with Last Guardian, it was announced in 2009. That's still bad, but at least it's not as long lol. Seriously though, Duke Nukem should be the only title to be delayed into the next generation. Game publishers can't keep doing this.
The part that bothers me most is they didn't even have a lot of Final Fantasy to work with. Instead they experimented and played around with a single FF saga for the WHOLE generation. Do they not know pretty much everything they're doing is the opposite of what the fans want?
FFXIII had a PERFECTLY fine ending. This whole paradox thing is a sad excuse to pull off unnecessary expansions in order for them to be able to exploit their "yearly" release experiment. That or they're just overly obsessive into making Lighting an icon like Cloud was.
I'll be this is an unpopular opinion but I'll be honest — I could so care less about this game anymore. I want SE to go back to the drawing board for the next numbered FF title, try to remember what elements made the series so special to so many people in the first place, and to PLEASE stop making sequels to FF XIII, a game that is, in my opinion, the worst single player Final Fantasy we've ever seen.
And Public Service Announcement: While my best guess is I think we'll get a Versus XIII eventually, everyone should realize this company is TOTALLY fine with disappointing their fans, and it's entirely possible they are just going to let the game die a quiet, inglorious death and harvest the best parts for FF XV. Everyone would be do well to expect the worst from SE — I think they've earned the doubts at this point.
I remember first seeing the trailer for this back when i was in middle school. Then saw the gameplay trailer in high school. Now, i haven't heard anything new since that incredible gameplay trailer. At this point im starting to give up. I mean my FFX HD has not had any updates. This game has not had any updates. Why is Final Fantasy reduced to something that makes the crappy anualization FF's come out first instead of the high quality ones. How could square miss AN ENTIRE generation and not give Kingdom Hearts 3, or a real final fantasy.
In this waiting time companies have fallen. Uncharted has had 4 overly polished games. We've had 2 Elder Scroll games. 2 Fallout games. We've seen Capcom w*oring out RE. We've seen many HD remakes. Just about 3 bioshocks. Naughty Dog has started a new IP. I reached guild rank 20 in white knight chronicles 2. MGS4 got trophy support. Now, the ps4 is being announced. The longest generation of consoles and they couldnt release a damn HD update.
lol, nice summary.
Well put.
Wouldn't be surprised, FF13 was actually going to be a PS2 title at first.
Wut? Since when? FF12 came out literally a month before the actual PS3. I was saving up for the PS3 with the video for FFXIII on my computer every morning.
So much hype…. ah… twere all young, we were!
