Ben’s Week In Review: April 8

Happy Easter! Forgive the lateness of the posting; I was…busy.

Okay Rockstar, spill it

You know, that's the only thing that went through my head when I read through all that supposed leaked information concerning Rockstar's future projects. I'm not really questioning the source (although I'm sure it's not all 100% accurate, as interns aren't exactly given access to all sorts of secrets), but it made me realize that I've been pining for some information concerning Grand Theft Auto V and the next Red Dead . They had better be making the latter – and I'm relatively certain they are – and I can't wait to hear more about it. I'm hoping snippets will start to arrive after GTAV is officially unveiled.

As big a fan of GTA as I am, I have to admit that RDR had more of a lasting impact on me than GTAIV. RDR was just so epic and I'm really surprised I liked the Western theme that much. The game had to be pretty damn amazing, as I've never been a fan of Western movies or even that time in history. And it bugs me that we haven't heard any news at all of the new Red Dead . As for GTAV, I'm getting antsy there, too. Where's that official unveiling, damnit?

Of course the hardcore gamers will support physical media

Wedbush Securities says the hardcore gamers aren't ready to abandon physical media . Well, duh . Unless the industry forcefully rips all physical media away from us (and only because the vast majority don't want it anymore and it's no longer a viable form), we're always gonna want those discs (or whatever). Collections go way beyond digital files on a video screen. It's not just about having something to play; it's about having something to look at and admire; that's what a collection is . I also don't see why physical media and digital can't coexist the way they do now…although I'm sure digital will eventually win out, as saddened as I am by that fact.

In the age of digital everything, it just seems like so much of the real is disappearing. Things we can feel, taste, smell, etc.; it's all being pushed aside in favoring other, more baser instincts and sensations. Anybody who honestly believes that talking to someone on Facebook is the same as interacting face-to-face is a poor product of this system and nothing more. They're deprived. And as far as I'm concerned, anyone who considers themselves a "collector" in the future with nothing tangible , is equally deprived. The physical at least has some semblance of soul .

Personal gaming update

Been focusing too much on work and other things this past week, so I haven't been able to make much progress. Basically just playing the same games I've been playing in 2012, although I did really enjoy I Am Alive . Don't be turned off by the minor mechanical issues; it's all about the atmosphere and I think Ubisoft delivers.

For the future, expect more interviews coming up (conscious effort to do many more this year), and the kick-off of our user review ongoing giveaway, which will give a lot of people a great chance to earn experience if they're looking to crack into the industry. That's right, the reward might involve a lot more than just the occasional game here and there…

I'm looking forward to hearing more about the next Red Dead. Rockstar did and amazing job with Redemption and I'm interested to see what goes on with Marston's son. Red Dead Revolution does sound like a fitting title in my opinion and I doubt they'd break the Triple R thing they have going on with the titles.

The whole fiasco with the Mass Effect 3 ending really annoyed the crap out of me this week. Finally posted something about it on my site at OnlySP. Get sick and tired of journalists saying "oh lets kick Bioware in the nuts for an ending we didn't enjoy" then when we get what we want we turn around and say "oh Bioware gave into the demands, what a shame" that's just shabby journalism and it makes me feel like a spoiled brat to be honest.

I agree with the sentiment of the digital media not feeling real, along with the same being applied to online relationships. It all just feels hollow and ultimately disappointing. Unfortunately, it's fact and facet of the modern world and we just have to accept it. So many people are willing to dive in feet-first, but I can't accept that. It's not right.

We'll likely end up with a media blowout for GTA V around June or July to take the wind out of the sails of E3. Rockstar know that they command attention and of course they won't show up to the expo. I definitely want more info about the game though, as I'm heartily sick of all these purported leaks. They're just so full of crap. I'd also like to hear about their Vita project. As for Red Dead Rebellion/Revolution or whatever it's going to be called, I am interested, in spite of so much of Redemption dragging, it was a quality product. It could be utterly fantastic. Even so, I kind of really want Midnight Club a bit more. Dunno why I like the series so much as there are better racers out there, but there you have it.

Oh, and where the **** is AGENT?! Three years after the announcement and not a damn thing to be seen on it. I'm just annoyed by that.

Personal Update:
Been busy as hell this past week and unable to do bugger all of anything. I've continued reading Sherlock and I'm playing back over the Killzone series and I think I really want to knuckle down and write more. There's a lot to be done in that front and I need to do it. I can't not :/
Peace.

I sort of think we may see someone try to market a disc'less game console next gen, like as a lower cost offering to the premium option.

PGU: So I held off on AC Revelations. I already have a ton of games to play, and so while the price was right the timing wasn't, perhaps another time.

Just been giving NG3 my love. I finished through the first day on Master Ninja, and Im pretty deep into day 2. I'm like hooked on the game, old school. I want the DLC. I can't wait for my Internet to get hooked up… Its taking forever.

I came to think of an idea regarding collecting physical media: What about a combination where you bought a cover with content, just instead of a disc there would be a note with a PSN code on it, much like the msn credit you can buy at stores today?

It would give you the box to display on the shelve, maybe even a manual, the special editions could continue to exist, just without the round shiny disc, that's the only difference.

Would that be a solution?

I'd rather have a digital manual and a physical copy of the game instead. The manual is probably more expensive to produce than the disc. A note saying 'see disc for manual' would be more acceptable to me.

Beamboom,

As a collector, I'm in total agreement with Nike's motto…..

"Just say NO"

BTW, As far as I'm concerned, my discs & carts have soul….my flash & thumb-drives don't.

PGU: Street Fighter X Tekken, Silent Hill Downpour & Ninja Gaiden 3 have been getting my time lately & i am digging some of the DLC for SCV.

Right now though, hanging out for Skullgirls releasing on April 11th. Pretty hyped.

Some interesting ideas about soul implicit in this week's update Ben – for example, the soul is often considered to be beyond the physical, but we need to collect something physical for it to have soul? 🙂 Just throwing ideas around here, if I knew the answer to all that soul stuff, I'd probably be impelled to be a preacher or something! Or maybe not…. ;).

As for hardcore gamers and physical media (and sorry to not comment in the original thread), there's been a huge shift to digital only amongst PC users – many, many very much core games (hell, most of the more niche core games, which I'd say are the 'corest', if we're off defining these kind of things – which is something I'm loathe to do, so enough of that) are only available these days in digital form, and it won't be long (as in, 50-10 years long) before it'll be the same on console (for example, the best anti-grav racer available this gen is download-only unless you're playing it on Vita). But not yet – BIRDS OF STEEL is so core you need an apple corer to play it, and still released physically last month, and is epic :D.

Trust me, plastic fresh off of Chinese presses don't come soul enjected to begin with 😉

There should be a blind study. Take this example, A gamer playing a game read from either a plastic disk or a magnetic storage disk without their knowledge as to what form the bytes are being read. They're asked: does one game feel like it has less or more soul than the other?

There we go. I'm on to the start of a religion.
PMC Religion
Physical Media Collectors =p

The term is also filed under medical journals as PMCI (physical media collectors illness) mental illness formulated by long term arbitrary and subjective belief in paranormal existences in plastic 😉

Hehe that was fun =p

I still buy all my music on CD, so I'm not particularly interested in a transition to intangible/download-only distribution (they're *all* "digital", people). I've bought two "full" games on PSN so far, but only because they were much cheaper; I'd still rather have the discs and may grab them from the bargain bin eventually.

It is nice having multiple games on the HDD, though.

PGU: I haven't started anything new since finishing ME2. I'm leaning towards something quick like Limbo.

My buddy and I were talking about RDR the other day, and had the same thoughts about it as your Ben. It did have a more lasting impact, and for me not just compared to GTA4 but all the previous entries as well, for many reasons, one being it actually had a compelling story and characters.

I think RDR is Rockstars future heavy hitter. GTA will always do well and be popular because one, it's been around for awhile, and 2, it's got a massive following. But RDR gathered a huge following as well. RDR has more things going for it right now, and Rockstar really needs to at least say the next entry is in the works, even if it doesn't release for awhile. The fans deserve it!

theres definitely going to be a new red dead game the last one sold far too well to let the series die!
only question is when and what will it contain.
im more interested in agent though.
im almost convinced its canned because R* refuses to comment on it and its been so so long since we last heard of it!
and if you look at some of R* norths developers linkdn pages they list working on agent up until 2010.
so according to those profiles 2011 and now there working on something else, thus putting another nail in agents coffin.
if we dont hear anything about it at E3 this year then agent is officially dead!

im in a bored spell lately.
ME3 did not keep me busy anywhere near as long as i thought it would, and everything else released this year has been really meh!
which is really sad, normally this time of the year we have heaps of GOTY contenders already!
but this year, well, all we have so far are disappointment of the year contenders!
pretty sad when you think about it by half way through this year we would of only had 3 really big releases!
ME3, MP3 and diablo 3.
that time last year we had HEAPS more!
i hope the second half of the year is a dam side better then the first half of the year!
otherwise this is going to go down as one of the worst years in gaming history!!!!!!!
just another bit that makes me believe were coming to another console generation end.

I'm ready for the RDR sequel, if they are indeed working on one. Playing a western is a whole lot more fun than watching one.

I bought Rayman Origins for the Vita this past Friday. I ordered it from Amazon for $30 and it will be here Wednesday. I could've purchased the digital copy for $35 and played it this weekend, but I wanted the physical copy. I feel better about owning something I can touch as well as see. It should have that new game smell too.

PGU: Fixed PS3 should be in tomorrow. Really want to get back to the MGS:HD collection. I should also look into backing up my PS3 HDD. Got a new computer! Asus G53. It's heavy and is basically a portable desktop. I gave Rage and BF3 a hard stare down in the PC game isle yesterday. I truly can't decide which one is for me. I concluded nothing and bought neither. Until then it's only minecraft. Which happens to be more addicting than cocaine mind you. That game is brilliant!

It's also snowing in northern Maine right now! Nice day for Easter.

They haven't lowered the price of digital media compared to physical so why do people think it will be cheaper in the future? As long as i live ill always accept physical media. And why does this wedbush group thinks also that casual gamers prefer digital when everyone prefers physical?

PGU: My XBL expires this week and im not renewing it. Best buy had on sale new LBP2 for $30 and MW3 for $35 so i couldn't resist. Tired of wasting money on xbox and getting nothing in return.

My Rockstar fanboyism began with GTA 2. The controls were awkward, but in '99 I didn't care much at all, I was 8. Driving around looking for the Zaibatsu cars and stealing them igniting some gang war between them and myself was probably the first thing I did when I turned the game on.

I was playing Red Dead the other day. After hearing the rumor, I decided to pop that bad boy back in my PS3 and giving it a whirl. I really like the Red Dead Nightmare, it's funny to lasso the zombies while riding the horse and watching them go full ragdoll. Anyway, I'm super excited for any announcement from Rockstar games. Whatever it may be.

only thing i have to say about the RDR 2 rumors, Shut Up! (jusk kidding)

i'm actualy a little more excited about RDR 2 than GTA V.

pgu: ME3 mostly, i'm near the end playing on insanity, jus got to get
past the maurder god. he's a real pain.
