Can Quantic Dream Top Heavy Rain?

It's tough to top your own masterpiece. The stars have to line up correctly for lightning to strike twice, especially if we're talking about innovation and revolution.

Heavy Rain is undoubtedly one of the generation's best but more importantly, it has helped to build upon interactive storytelling concepts. Ever since that game wowed the hell out of us, we've been wondering if developer Quantic Dream can blow our minds yet again. Their new project remains under wraps but we remain encouraged and hopeful; here are our reasons:

Firstly, studio boss David Cage has said several times that he was extremely pleased with Heavy Rain 's success. In his eyes, it proved that gamers were finally mature enough to reward such an effort; the experience wasn't like anything else available and it delivered on deep, emotional levels. Now, due to this revelation, Cage has said his team will continue on this path in an effort to take the next step. Therefore, we expect another storytelling step in the right direction.

Secondly, Heavy Rain was a sales success at over 1.5 million copies sold, but that greatly exceeded expectations. In fact, early internal estimates were reported to be only a few hundred thousand and indeed, Sony was watching the game's performance closely. But the risk worked out. Sony should be more than willing to support Quantic Dream in yet another revolutionary attempt, and developers have recently praised Sony for being a tolerant and patient partner. Media Molecule said this about their publisher when working on LittleBigPlanet , and David Jaffe just echoed those thoughts concerning the Twisted Metal delay.

Thirdly, the talent at Quantic Dream clearly rivals that of the best studios out there. If you've seen behind-the-scenes footage of how that team worked to create Heavy Rain , you know how talented and dedicated they really are. Given all these factors, we're convinced that Quantic Dream's new project will potentially push our industry to new heights, and continue to explore plot and storytelling devices in the interactive entertainment venue. Now…just tell us what you're working on!

Well, with better visuals/animation, refinement of controls and improved voice acting plus an equally good story their next project could easily top Heavy Rain.

Heavy Rain was fantastic and I think QD can top HR. Indigo Prophecy was great game as well. Whatever they are working Im sure it will be awesome.

HR was an experience that broke through the typical and still managed to leave open lots of avenues for future exploration. Though I'm afraid their next project will take so long it'll probly be on PS4, I bet it will raise the bar for excellency once again no matter what.

Just shows to go ya, stick with Sony and Sony sticks with you all the way to the top.

I really really really wanna see what they do with that War Drama concept. That could be a very engrossing experience nobody could pass up. All we see is the mindless killing of enemies, but what if you had to make choices like wheter to allow a prisoner to be tortured or have to choose between a situation where you know you will die, but be honored as a hero or let a fellow soldier die. I want a game with those choices. Not where I have to choose between an M4 and Ak 47

I remember them talking about that, it could be a really good experience and something that doesn't show up in gaming due to the focus on combat in your basic FPS. L.A. Noire touched on the aftermath of war in a great way, but QD could surely bring out the immediacy of the war for players in a very real way. If Heavy Rain did anything well it generated a sense of immediacy.

One word…

YES!!

Quantic Dream created a fantastic game with Fahrenheit (Indigo Prophecy), and Heavy Rain was a HUGE jump in quality.

I have no doubt whatever David Cage has planned next will blow our minds!! He's always loved doing something different with the medium, and with the success of Catherine, games exploring relationships and mental well-being could be the next big thing!! (I'd love it so much if the next Quantic Dream game beat CoD sales in 2012 / 2013, now THAT'S dreaming. :P)

It was recently discovered that they filed a trademark for Infraworld earlier in the year, so they're working on something.

I think that it'll be difficult to top Heavy Rain, but if they could make a successor to it a killer app for Move, as well as doing a second project that builds upon it for the DS3. Whatever the QD team has their hands on, I'm interested, and I think that Sony will pick these guys up too, if they're the publishers for the next project and it is another success. I'd like to see it anyway.

I just wonder whether their next game will feel fresh, or like a revolution again. I hope so, but I kind of doubt it.

I wonder if it'll stick to the real world like HR or if it will go into some other sub genre like science fiction. I'd like them to stick to the human drama in whatever they do because they did it so well.

The only thing that I'd suggest are less confined environments. It worked well with HR to keep you in the story, but I think QD could break serious ground taking another direction.

Omikron was science fiction (or perhaps futuristic fantasy).

Plus, David Bowie.

Gaming has matured to the point where Interactive Experiences like Heavy Rain now exist.

I think Quantic Dream can not only top Heavy Rain but also surpass it. Technology will allow advancements in gameplay and graphics to eliminate any minor flaws that were in HR. Ensuring a nice smooth immersive experience. What will truly elevate the experience will be the actual story. I feel that HR was only a testing of the waters and now QD will be more confident in creating a more intriguing adventure. HR was dramatic yes but I know they can go deeper.

I'd love to see if QD develops a sequel, especially after…

SPOILERS!

The "heroine" epilogue where a mysterious voice called "Vincent" tells Madison she needs a more ferocious adversary…

The possibilities are endless… What if this time we get an even darker story a la Seven?

That was pretty cool, and a great nod to how best selling fiction novels tend to end.

ofcourse they can. i wonder if the next game will remain ps3 exclusive becuase there is an interview where cage expresses his desire to branch out and would like more people to have access to his games. he could probably get a publisher to back him if he wants to do that.

sony should try to lock qd down with some kind of deal. if hr is considered such a success in sony's eyes how come we have not heard or seen anything about a new game?

there are all kinds of areas i would like to see a new game go. survival horror would be interesting. how about a game set in a blade runner type universe?

I think there are enough good studioes doing survival horror games already, I'd love to see such talents as QD working on something truly unique that really set them apart from the rest. Like Heavy Rain. Personally I never liked that game that much but I do respect their work and do of course see it's uniqueness.

A Blade Runner universe however, now that sounds good. Still with the human drama atmosphere of HR, just in a cyberpunk setting… Yeah.
I also agree with WorldEndsWithMe further up here in hoping for "less confined environments". Those two combined and I am *so* there.

maybe survival horror is a bad idea but it does seem the genre is in decline. dead space was good, but i would not mind to see what qd could pull off in the genre. re5 played more like a gears of war clone. silent hill has went off the rails so to speak so i'm struggling to come up with names of great studios working in the genre. visceral games is about all i can come up with.

I'd add Condemned 2 to the list too… Maybe even the FEAR games? But yeah, you are probably right. It's not the healthiest of genres.

Anyhow, I feel that many other studios *could* make survival horror games if they wanted to, but not many could make a game like Heavy Rain…

That, and I find games like Dead Space to be way too scary for my nerves, I'd much rather see a cyberpunk themed human drama game. 🙂

@Excelsior1: I think you are right about the survivor horror genre. The DLC was the most thrilling section of the game, and the part you have to escape the bad old doctor. I kept imagining a Clock Tower kind of game with HR engine and gameplay style, with Move support and 3D… Oh the nightmare 🙂
How about a cold-war era war drama? That would be something they could tackle very well, the atmosphere would be great… Spies, the threat of nuclear war, conspiracies, betrayals…

I think when it comes to the field of developing games you HAVE to keep pushing yourself. You have to keep trying to top yourself. By all means don't sit back and go bankrupt. Release another game to keep yourself afloat. But don't ever stop TRYING to be better.

I suggest Quantic Dream does what they think is best. Don't listen to the criticism that reviewers offered.

Easily! I believe they can easily top HR. Much like our beloved Uncharted, all they need to do is refine what they have and deliver another impressive storyline. I can't imagine that they wouldn't have their triumphant successor. HR had odds and ends that needed to be ironed out and with such a game/genre, the difference would be immeasurable! Realism of facial expressions has definitely reached a new milestone and physical gestures are much smoother. Toss in another couple of years for progression and we're looking at a mighty win. All my money is on the table with this one, for sure. QD will dominate the skeptics. Regardless of critics, they will most definitely have my money, day one.
