Ben’s Week In Review: March 9

Games like Grand Theft Auto IV and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots won't be coming in March, but this month sees the release of two other titles I'm very much looking forward to, so let's talk about those, shall we?

Dark Sector has me excited, I admit

The game has officially gone gold , and I have to say, I'm plenty psyched about playing it. We'll have an interview with developer Digital Extremes very soon, and we're going to have them answer some very pressing questions of ours. In the meantime, let's just say this may become the bloodiest game of the generation – and perhaps the bloodiest of all time – if early videos and previews are any indication. The Glaive appears to be one of the sickest weapons ever , and with a goodly assortment of other weapons, I get the distinct feeling we're going to be doing a whole lot of killing. On top of which, while I love me a good FPS, even I have to admit that we have more than enough of those. Thankfully, Dark Sector is a third-person action title that seems to be a blend of Resident Evil and Devil May Cry , and that's plenty promising!

I suppose if I had one concern it would center on the action and weapon balancing. If the Glaive is as amazing as it looks, do we really have a reason to use the regular guns? I'm just hoping we're not constantly ignoring those kick-ass firearms just because the Glaive is more effective in almost every situation…this would be a crucial mistake. But it's another question we hope to have answered by Digital Extremes, so we'll know what's what before the game releases on the 25th. Cross your fingers for an awesome title!

Don't forget about Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds!

You better not! It was supposed to arrive some time later last year, but it got delayed and fell off the radar for several months. This worried me a great deal, being a giant fan of the series and all, and I thought for a while Sony might not bring this one to North America. It wouldn't make any sense, as every single other entry released in the US (and sold well, too), but I was still concerned… Well, no more. Now I just can't wait for Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds to arrive on March 18, and I'm hoping we get the copy from SCEA a day or two early so we can dive in for a review. I'm fairly certain I know what to expect – I played the demo late last year, and besides, HSG doesn't ever change drastically – but that's a good thing- see, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Believe it or not, that's a motto I like to use every now and then when it comes to my favorite franchises, and Hot Shots is a great example. It's awesome fun, and at the same time, it's a very realistic golf title; in many ways, even more realistic than the esteemed Tiger Woods PGA Tour series. Yeah, believe it. Beneath that cartoony exterior is a surprisingly accurate golf sim.

By the way, I was a pretty damn good player online with Hot Shots Golf: Fore! , and I expect to be pretty damn good with this one, too. Of course, I may not have anywhere near as much time as I used to have with Fore! , but that's okay…I'm a veteran when it comes to HSG. 🙂

Personal gaming update

Not much to report here; I was sick most all of last week, and really didn't feel like playing much of anything. I'm still about 20 hours into Lost Odyssey , and I did get a chance to play plenty of Twisted Metal: Head-On: Extra Twisted Edition for my review . It's tons 'o fun. 🙂 Next up is…well, you know what's next. You just read all about it, so I ain't repeatin' it.
