E3 was pretty good this year. There were several good announcements (even with all the leaks) and conferences. I have to say though, at the risk of sounding like a Sony fanboy (I kind of am), they killed it at the Sony conference. Probably one of the best shows they have put on for E3. It was chock full of games and nothing else. Which is great news for us Playstation fans. With that said, here are my top 8 moments from E3 listed more or less on my level of excitement. May or may not include a non Playstation entry. So watch out.
8. Resident Evil 7
What started out as a typical creepy game turned out to be a genuine surprise. Or maybe I’ve just been out of the loop or something. Either way I was pretty shocked when they revealed the Resident Evil 7 title. And definitely interested. I fall into the category of gamers that fell away from the series after about RE3. The series just kind of got away from the horror elements that I loved about the earlier games. But thanks to their new trailer as well as the demo (try it out if you haven’t already), I’m actually a bit more interested to play. It looks promising and it looks like Resident Evil is going to back to being scary.
7. Playstation VR
I’m still on the fence about VR. There is that nagging feeling that it’s going to fall through like many other peripherals. I am also leaning a bit more for it all the time. The more I hear and see about it, the further that nagging goes away. VR was sprinkled throughout all of E3 and Sony was no different. It looks like there are going to be some pretty solid games coming out for the Playstation VR, including the aforementioned RE7. That coupled with the ease of access, decent price point (revealed here as well), and comfortable headset, I can see Playstation VR doing really well.
6. Skyrim: Special Edition
Do I really need to buy another version of a game that I already own and have played many hours in? Apparently so. During the Bethesda conference, they revealed (quite slyly I might add) the Skryim Special Edition. It was a quick trailer comparing shots from Skryim on the previous console generation systems and the new updated Skryim for new systems. And man does it look amazing. Skryim was already a beautiful game to begin with. Now it’s almost photorealistic. The part the really clinched the deal for me though was mod support for console versions. Oh ya! Shut up and take my money!
5. Zelda: Breath of the Wild
I don’t own a Wii U. And neither do a lot of other people apparently. There just isn’t really anything that got me interested. Don’t get me wrong I love Nintendo. I grew up on the NES and even more so on the SNES. But I just never got around to getting a Wii U. And my Wii is currently collecting a lot of dust. I guess I just don’t play a lot of Nintendo games. Zelda on the other hand looks pretty amazing. And it just might be the game to push me over the edge. Of course for all we know Zelda could very well come out on the NX. Anyways, Nintendo spent practically an entire day devoted to showcasing this game. It looks like a lot of fun. It’s more open world and introduces a lot of new game mechanics to the series. Will it be enough to invest in yet another system? Maybe. Just maybe.
4. Death Stranding/Kojima
Kojima showed up at the Sony conference. And in typical Kojima style, walking down a lit path and introducing himself with “I’m back” to cheers from the crowd. What a spectacle of a man. After the crowd calmed down he surprised the world with a trailer for his newest and first project with his new company, Death Stranding . It was bizarre and interesting and didn’t really tell us a whole lot. But the vibe was very much Silent Hills. Or at least creepy anwyay. Which I’m happy to see. I think Kojima really has the potential to create a pretty scary game. He has once again joined forces with Norman Reedus but there was no sign of Guillermo Del Toro being involved. Either way, even with this very vague trailer I’m really excited to see what he comes up with. And I hope it is scary.
3. The Last Guardian
The Last Guardian made a brief appearance with a short trailer but revealed two interesting things. First is that there is apparently more than one Trico (the bird/dog/cat creature) and the other one did not look too friendly. Seeing that adds a whole new fold the mystery of The Last Guardian . More importantly however, the trailer revealed a release date; October 25th of this year. It’s finally coming. Finally. It’s actually going to happen. I hope it’s good after all these years of “maybe” coming out. I find myself still pretty excited for it though.
2. Horizon: Zero Dawn
We got to see some more gameplay of Horizon: Zero Dawn. I’m already excited for this game as well. It just seems so interesting. I have so many questions about the world of Horizon. And that is definitely a good thing. Something new that showed up in this gameplay was a new robotic critter that corrupted other robots. The battle was pretty tense and cinematic. And Aloy mentioned the technology looking ancient. Really? Well that’s interesting. We also got a look at some more of her abilities and some dialogue with an npc. Just as with The Last Guardian we also got a release date for Horizon and it’s coming out early next year. February 28th to be exact. Super excited for this one.
1. God of War
Sony opened their conference with this gem and it was an amazing way to start it. Rumors were floating around for quite some time that we might get some more information on the new God of War and that it would take place in Norse mythology. Turns out those rumors were true. And we got more than just a trailer as well, there was some great gameplay footage as well. It was a little different than the usual God of War gameplay. The camera was over the shoulder and of course Kratos didn’t have his chaos blades but used an axe that looked pretty awesome. When Kratos stepped out of the shadows I was cheering along with the crowd. I’m a long time of the God of War franchise and I’m super stoked to see the series getting a refreshing makeover.
Like I said earlier, this E3 was pretty awesome. It’s too bad it goes by so fast. E3 always give me some things to look forward to I have to say, it’s going to be a good time for us Playstation gamers. Not a such a good time for my wallet though…
