Ben’s Week In Review: May 29

So, what's everyone playing this Memorial Day Weekend? 🙂

Another delay for No Man's Sky…concerning?

So I hear this one has been pushed back again , this time until August. Does that worry anybody?

I've never been sold on this game, regardless of the obvious potential. I know developer Hello Games has tossed out some ridiculous stats over the past year and the premise is appealing (i.e., a seemingly limitless universe to explore, and no two players' experiences will be the same), but it's just rife with pitfalls.

There are so many ways this could turn out to be a flop. The flying controls could be a mess, there might not be enough worthwhile stuff to find out there in the vast galaxy, it could seem aimless and pointless, etc. Hello Games did make one of my favorite games of the previous generation – Joe Danger – but there's such a massive gulf between that title and No Man's Sky that I'm very skeptical. I have a bad feeling that small team bit off a lot more than they can chew.

It won't be The Order 2, will it?

I guess developer Ready at Dawn will reveal their new game very soon here, but it won't be what I want, I'm sure.

I've wanted a sequel to The Order: 1886 ever since I finished that great game. But amid a flurry of terrible and even downright idiotic reviews from so-called critics, I'm willing to bet the studio was instructed to either try something new, or dramatically overhaul the present structure. Now, I wouldn't mind a little more freedom and perhaps some more meaningful boss encounters, but that's about it. As Uncharted 4: A Thief's End has once again proven, linearity doesn't equate to inferiority when compared to open-world and in fact, very often, linear experiences are better for a number of reasons. However, there's no battling the trends, now is there?

I don't think The Order sold well enough to warrant a sequel, either, did it?

New console announcements at E3…?

GameStop says they expect to see new system announcements at E3 and I guess we shouldn't be surprised. They've been talking about the PS4 Neo long enough and I bet Nintendo fully unveils the "NX." The jury's still out on Microsoft but as they won't want to be left behind, and we've heard whispers of an updated Xbox, they might make E3 a new console threesome. Well, whatever. Utterly ridiculous and unfortunate, I say. We're just not far enough into this generation to start talking about this, though I suppose I could blame VR (at least to a point). We could also say that in the manufacturer drive to produce easier-to-develop-for systems, they made consoles that just got too old way too fast.

Uncharted 4 pushes the hell out of the PS4, I know that. The system heats up big time with that disc.

Personal gaming update

And speaking of Uncharted 4: A Thief's End , I've completed the game and the review (click-y the link-y) and it really was a defining experience for me. I think it's very fitting that this might be the very last video game review I ever write. I've always loved Uncharted but I had my concerns going into this final entry, and I never expected it to have the effect on me that it did. I mean, this IP is bombastic and fun and beautifully produced and while it had its moments, it never made an indelible, emotional imprint on me. This one did. It was just the way it was crafted, and how this final chapter rolled out and ended that made me all melancholy. And thankful. If you call yourself a gamer, even when using the loosest possible definition of the term, you have to play it.

Uncharted 4 is hard to leave behind and if I didn't have Doom sitting here, and if the Blood and Wine expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt wasn't coming out this week, I would've already started a new game. Once I'm done with those, and if I've got time before I Am Setsuna arrives in July, I will definitely go back for another go-round. It's just that good.

P.S. I know people want to see a Final Fantasy XV review from me but I'm just not sure I can waste $60 on that mound of filth. Then again, if I'm right and it really is junk, and the scores are in the freakin' 6s or something, it might be really fun to review. 😉

I disagree, I think they are going to stick it out with The Order and just make changes. Many franchises begin on shaky ground, even though most sane gamers enjoyed it even if they wouldn't give it a 9. They kept talking like it was going to continue and squeezed every dime out of it they could with sales.

However, that doesn't mean it will be what is revealed. RAD could be working on something else too with 1887 on back priority. I hope I'm right, I've never seen a more beautiful game with a tighter narrative.

No Man's Sky, I keep flip flopping on. I think I'll just read the reviews and then get it cheap.

DOOM! It's awesome Ben. It's a total throwback except that you have to run and jump a lot where it seems impossible, and it's rarely clear where to go, plus the enemies are in waves instead of hidden throuought the levels (I'm not a fan of that) but the actual fun of seeing and killing the new iterations of all the Hell demons and mystery of the Doom marine and the fatalities and old school gameplay it's all so pleasing that the low scores are proof that it's good.

Meanwhile, I'm going to be getting another writing job too! I'll be working with Gamer Gloves. We will be rolling out the second generation of gloves for gamers soon and I'll be the one turning the goods into the word pictures. I met with the co founder and he's a great guy with a very smart business acumen.

Check out the product so far, especially the upcoming Version II. This all happened basically because I use them and ran into someone on LinkedIn who liked what I was doing here at PSXE and elsehwere. Whether your hands get cold in the A/C or sweaty on the pad, or you blister up, or you just wanna feel like a superhero we got you covered.

The thing is I still think the order has crazy good potential for a good series.

I believe Sony was disappointed by the low sales performance of The Order and decided not to help finance anymore games by Ready At Dawn. RAD definitely has talent and with a little guidance could've turned The Order into an awesome franchise, but we'll probably never see a sequel.

Microsoft appears to be disappointed with 2nd place and plans to develop a more powerful console than the PS4Neo in 2017.

Couldn't care less about getting The Order 2.

Also couldn't care less about No Mans Sky, but we all complain when we get broken games coming out that needed some extra time in the oven, then when one gets pushed back more and more we moan about how we probably should be worried about it. So as much as I don't really have much to say on No Mans Sky, I commend Hello Games as such a small team to say Hey, our games not ready yet, we want to put more polish on the experience so we're going to take the time to get it right.

It's always a case of how much and how far is a game delayed before it becomes clear the game just isn't working. I can hardly imagine The Last Guardian being a masterpiece now.

I've lost faith in The Last Guardian as well. I'd love to be wrong, but it looks bland now.

I really want No Man's Sky to be good. To be honest, I feel like I'm going to like it regardless of its quality for the simple fact that I've long been a scenery observer in games now. The slow exploration and wonder of infinite places to visit should be enough for me, so long as it isn't a complete disaster of a game.

The delays with the Last Guardian are a joke. They announced that game right in the middle of the last generation and now we're in the middle of another one and the only footage there is to show for it is the exact same footage from back then. I think there's a mythical status with the game mostly built around the good will of the two games that came before it. But how has the vision changed over the years, are we going to get the same game they were selling so long ago? Will the game feel dated before its even hit the gate? Had the game been scrapped and completely started over again? How hands on is the director since he left the company in the early stages of production and just stayed on as a consultant?

It's like that bad decision they can't bail on. They're in too deep.

Can you imagine being on a team that works on something for years and you never have anything to show for it? How depressing from a careers point of view!

I think RaD and ND should work together to make The Order 2. Or they should just get ND to work on it.

I liked the Order quite a bit, and if it was fleshed out a little more and had more variety it would be fantastic.

It reminded me of Knack, a game I also liked a lot that just needed to have a little more variety and depth to it to elevate it into AAA status.

I honestly loved the order. I just hope that if a sequel does come along it doesnt lose everything it is due to trying to pander to a wider audience.
