Ben’s Week In Review: April 5

As Bloodborne created plenty of positive vibes in the industry, I hope the trend continues with the likes of Mortal Kombat X , The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt , and Batman: Arkham Knight . And Happy Easter! 🙂

Respawn should treat Titanfall as the first step

I've seen enough of Titanfall to know two things: 1. It's not my thing, and 2. It's a great idea that seemed somewhat half-baked.

Now, the developer's community manager is teasing various details , including the fact that the original is being viewed as a foundation of sorts. It's a stepping stone, which is the correct way to look at it. Titanfall had a solid concept and a ton of potential but as the original sat, I found it distinctly underwhelming. I did, however, acknowledge the potential and if Respawn goes above and beyond with the sequel, I might actually play it. Of course, they'll need to implement a real campaign or I won't bother but either way, we should all anticipate a better multiplayer experience the whole way 'round. Personally, I get bored with multiplayer-oriented shooters, no matter how fresh they seem, so if Respawn can grab me, they can grab anybody.

I'm not saying Titanfall felt half-assed or under-cooked. On the contrary, I think the development team delivered what they could for a first effort. It's a brand new IP and they know they're only going to build from here on out. I'm good with that. I just hope they really do listen to the feedback and recognize that potential, as opposed to simply sticking with the same ol' same ol'.

Bloodborne appears to be a sales success, and everyone keeps talking about it

Sometimes, a game releases and people stop talking about it a week after it releases. This happens to good titles, too. However, we're still seeing plenty of Bloodborne headlines and I find that encouraging; it means this game has had a profound impact on the gaming community. It certainly seems to be off to a solid start in Japan and I'm betting sales in other regions will be just as strong.

You know it has struck a chord with the community when you see so many people diving in, trying to turn heads. There's the dude who beat the game as the weakest class and without using guns or leveling up. Then there's the guy who blasted through the game in only 37 mins. (and yes, I'm aware he used exploits and glitches). Everyone appears to remain fascinated with what Bloodborne has to offer, which should translate to long-term success. I just wonder if this will result in a true sequel, or if From Software will simply keep going with the Dark Souls series. There are clear differences between the two IPs…I wonder what the fans are hoping for in terms of the future.

Personal gaming update

Soldner-X 2: Final Prototype is one of those games that seemed a lot better five years ago. I guess it's because I might be a little retro-d out, or maybe it's just because the game didn't hold up well over time. I mean, it's still a super fun, well-produced title; it just lacks the pizzazz it had back in 2010. However, I don't think I'm burned out on retro games 'cuz Axiom Verge is pretty freaking awesome, so… 😉 Review coming soon for that one and if you haven't checked it out, you should read about developer Tom Happ's development journey . This guy has managed to do something very special and he should be commended.

I'm also about 20 hours into Shadow Hearts: Covenant and I forgot how great a lot of those older RPGs were. Sure, the voice performances, story, and other elements (like world design) are basically a joke compared to now, but the gameplay just stands out as a huge highlight. Anywho, Mortal Kombat X will be here soon, I'm sure, so I'll just keep enjoying Covenant and Axiom Verge .

Call of Duty 4 was and is one of my favourite games ever. When the original Infinity Ward left, I was sad because they had so much talent and the whole situation as a whole was just ugly. I then found out they formed a studio on their own, Respawn, and I was ecstatic to see what their next installment was because I knew no matter what it was, it will likely be damn good. When they introduced Titanfall, I was intrigued because it seemed like a really interesting concept. However, when they announced that it was an X-Box exclusive, I just lost all hope and faith in them.

Basically, I used to love them, now I couldn't care less about them and Titanfall 2. They no longer have my support.

Assuming that TITANFALL 2 will be multiplatform. What will be they're excuse be this time around, when journalists start to ask questions like, 'you said TITANFALL was only achievable with XBOX LIVE cloud servers. Where sitting here looking at this clickbait news worthy multiplatform tag like…. seriously nigga?'

I just love Bloodborne. A totally unexpected surprise.

I think Respawn will do a great job on Titanfall 2 and I'll be ready from the get go to play it… assuming it comes to PS4.

I was actually impressed by Soldner X on Vita. I hadn't, however, spent a lot of time with it's original release. When I saw that the game was free to those originally purchased the old game I decided to give it a try. I was impressed that it ran at a solid 60fps and looked remarkably good.

PGU: Pretty much just Bloodborne. I'm really savoring the experience. I've made it into the Forbidden Woods. I've grown to really like Ludwig's Holy Blade. It's actually replaced my Battle Axe as one of my quick select weapons.
While it doesn't have the range of the Axe or the knockdown ability, it's strike and blunt damage and it's versatility made it a favorite. I notice it's damage output may be best in class too.

Ah yes, my weapon of choice.

The sword is definitely the best weapon in the game because it also gets a power boost from your arcane stat. Level up arcane to at least 25 and with high endurance youll become almost unstoppable especially against invaders. Make sure to imbue the sword with arcane magic that costs 3 bullets for even more damage!

Temjin don't level up arcane unless you plan on putting an elemental gem into it.

If you want the most out of the weapon I went a quality build, which is 25/25 str/skl and I'm in newgame plus and my ATK Rating on the stats screen is almost 700 and I don't even have any really good gems in it, my highest gem is 18% I think, and I know there are 25% gems out there.

I used the axe for the whole first playthrough until my stats made the ludwig hit like a truck.

I'm going to do a skill or bloodtinge next playthrough.

Xenris when the sword is level 10 the arcane stat reaches A which means more damage per arcane stat. So yes everyone should level up arcane if you plan to use the sword.

The arcane stat only applies if you put a gem on it that turns the weapon to scale with only arcane. You lose all physical damage. There are only 2 or 3 real split weapons in the game, Burial Blade, Mercy Blade, and Tontritus.

So if he has invested more than 16str 12skl to use the sword and if he wants to use a quality build that putting any points in arcane is a waste. Ive tested this, so have others, you lose all physical damage when you put a arcane, blot of fire gem into the ludwig and you get no dmg scaling from arcane unless you put the magic gem into it.

Quality 25/25 str/skl is the best way to build if you are going to use ludwig.

Thanks guys. Congrats on beating it Xenris.

I've made no upgrades to arcane.
My strength is high, above 25. Though, I have been dumping everything into either skill or endurance right now. And I have my Ludwig blade upgraded to where it needs something better than twin blood shards. My skill stat is a little low, right around 20. I can hack down most things fairly quickly with it. Only some of those snake beasts require a maybe 3-4 strikes.
It's cool going back to earlier places and just working the crap out of enemies. But my insight is only 19 right now.

Thank you Temjin!

25 is the soft cap you get a bit less in the returns after that point, 25 25 is a good split, if you don't care about PVP then put them both to 50 which is the hard cap, this should put your soul level somewhere around 130, most people are stopping their leveling at 110 or 120, so you will still be able to play with those people for the most part.

Vit and Endurance soft caps seem to be 35 for vit and 40 for endurance but I left mine at 30 30.

Had the Souls series sold like any other FPS, we'd see a lot of Souls clone.

Bloodborne and Axiom Verge. Trying to get through AV before Tuesday when Bastion comes out, I doubt it though.

I don't know how far I am in bloodborne but I'm in this place called the Nightmare Frontier where I lost about 50,000 blood echoes due to some boulder throwing trolls. Also, I've been invaded twice for the first time took the first guy lightly and he killed me, but the next person I took more seriously and beat pretty easily.

I really do like bloodborne but i'm getting really frustrated coz i still hav'nt made it to the cleric beast, so close last night an died on the bridge where those 2 werewolve thingys are.

Yeah I've found that the werewolves that your talking about are pretty tough throughout, though wants you have access to the hammer they become more manageable. Keep at it though you should be hooked after you defeat the cleric.

Around level 20 w/ emphasis on strength and vitality made him a cake walk. Have plenty of molotov for times when you step back to use blood vials. I believe it's his left you want to keep yourself located towards from behind him for physical attacks. Hope this helps!

Avoid the Werewolves and go down the opposite side of the bridge, you will fight in a dark house, explore these areas and you will open up a shortcut and a way to get behind the wolves and you don't even have to fight them at all.

The game is designed for you to A fight them and win and get 6 blood vials, or B the more likely thing that happens is it funnels you to where the game wants you to go because they are too strong for most people.

I'm loving Bloodborne, going through the game on NG+ and I finally got my PS+ back so I'm playing it online. Haven't been invaded or anything yet but I missed not being able to see the phantoms and the notes and stuff.

Bloodborne really is a phenomenon, I have people asking me if I have played it and they aren't even that into games just play casually with me on the weekends sometimes.

I am loving that the game is getting the attention it IMO deserves.

TitanFall was fun but I much prefer more technical shooters like CS:GO, or UT, games that don't have all these fancy perks, call ins etc. Its just you and your gun.

PGU:

Been Playing a lot of Bloodborne and Helldivers lately. Just started Batman Arkym City because I never got a chance to play it only Asylum, and I love it so far. Going to check out Valiant Hearts or whatever that ubisoft game is that comes with the march PS+ games, and I dabble with OliOli and its pretty neat although I don't think I'll spend too much time with it.

I'm curious to know where some people are in there playthrough in Bloodborne, like Temjin and the other people on here who have fallen in love with it. Any crazy co op or invasion stories?

no co-op invasion here. I did try out a the summoning bell for the dual witch boss.
We took them down with little trouble. The first time I fought them I went solo and nearly had the second one dead but then I got nailed by a reaper thing's spaz out attack.

Awesome, I remember almost dying to that fight from the same thing, I got lucky though and beat it my first try but I do count that as luck because I was out of potions and I got really lucky on an I-Frame.

You will get to one boss later on in one of the forests that will drive you nuts. I didn't co op it but I can see how it would make the fight way more manageable. I had to cheese it a little bit 😛
