Will More PS1 Classics Get Remasters?

The Resident Evil HD Remaster launches this month and while it's pure fanservice (let's not deny it), it still reminds us of the way horror games used to be.

In fact, it reminds us of older video game design, which some people may not like. It reminds us of a time when eccentricities we don't see today were common, and veteran gamers simply came to accept them.

Thing is, such an idea seems to have worked out well for Capcom. I wouldn't be surprised to hear about great sales for the new HD Remaster and of course, remasters for slightly newer games (from the PS2 and PS3 eras) have become common fare as well. The fans tend to love 'em and there's nothing wrong with such a positive reaction. The question is, now that some developers are tackling HD overhauls of PS1 classics, like Resident Evil and Final Fantasy VII , have the floodgates been opened? What other original PlayStation classics might end up receiving the remaster treatment? Which ones do you most want to see?

Let's not forget that there were some seriously amazing games during the first PlayStation era. Wouldn't it be interesting to get an HD remaster of the first Dino Crisis , for example? Or what about Syphon Filter ? And hey, who didn't love Ape Escape and some of the first Crash Bandicoot s? There are some RPGs I'd really like to see get a serious visual update but it probably won't happen; Legend of Dragoon and Star Ocean: The 2nd Story would top my list. But in truth, I'm not sure those games would look that great in HD…

What say you?

HD Remasters of PS1 games? No thank you. I am sure many would prefer Remakes of PS1 games with PS4 graphics.

I appreciate the games of past, I am enjoying the present and in my future I want to experience games that feel like that generation.

I don't think we'll see many.
The RE release was probably done because it was created from GC assets, a substantial increase over the PSX original. Therefore it actually looks half decent even now.
I expect that if it does well enough Capcom will go ahead and re-release RE Zero, another game with the same tech on GC.

I think in FFVII's case the work was mostly done already just by releasing it on PC. Seems to me the console game is just a port of the PC port. I suppose we can expect FFVIII HD as well now.
…in fact it seems most FF's have been re-invigorated over the years as it is. Most of the original FF's have been inexpensively redone for mobile platforms. Taking them from like NES quality to say, SNES or semi-PS2 quality.

I just think with the amount of work a game would require to get an RE style of an overhaul would be quite expensive, meaning taking it from the PSX original and redoing all of the assets as Capcom did with RE when it hit GC.

Personally, I do hope Konami comes around and gets MGS updated, at least with a Twin Snakes HD release or something.

I'd be happy with a port of the FFVIII PC version to PS4. Love those crisp, stable textures versus shaky stretchers.

Agree with Temjin, this was not only a hd remaster from a ps1 game,it was a hd remaster of a REMAKE[and a very very good one] of a ps1 game.
And yeah,i think resident evil zero will be released also.

Very old and all that, but stil the best horrorgame together with res.evil zero.I would also like a remake of res. evil 2 but i think that's not gonna happen.[To bad capcom doesn't make quality res.evils anymore……

Ha. Yes. Very true. The PSX didn't have 'perspective correction' for texture maps back then. Sadly too. Because it makes a heck of a difference when the textures don't suddenly askew like they do in every PSX game.

It is 100% fanservice of the highest caliber. I cannot even express how happy I've been playing the remake. It reminds me of the better days when you die in 3 hits and things happen that you do not expect. Like the crimsons. Its been great. And the trophies for speedrunning and challenge runs… Just yes.

And sure I guess. FF9 and 7 first please.

To be honest and I might be in the minority here, BUT I would not mind seeing a remake of Silent Hill.

Thats it!

Keep playing!

For each old remake announced for the PS4 my purchase will be postponed by six months. It's *not* what I buy a new platform for.

I agree with you, bud, though I would think a PC guy like yourself would appreciate one system being able to access a legacy of software history.

Backward compatibility is a different topic. That's the major argument against consoles, as far as I am concerned.

But I have zero interest in purchasing old games. To be able to play the old games I already own, sure that'd be nice, but to *buy* ten-fiften-twenty year old games today? Get outa here.
I don't have rose tinted glasses to filter them through.

Beamboom: Nah, of course you don't. It's just because there aren't any old PC games worth revisiting because the overwhelming majority of them suck. It's okay to admit it. 😉

By all means, PC games are no exception. They suck just as hard. 😉

I just want them to bring back Heroes of Might and Magic. Doesn't have to be remastered, either.

If we go 20 years back I honestly can't recall a single game I'd like to see again, not even on their original hardware.

If we go just ten years back some titles will probably start to pop up if I am hard pressed, but nope: My focus is firmly on what lies ahead.

I wouldn't mind seeing games like Bust A Groove, Rival Schools, Bushido Blade, or Colony Wars getting a fresh coat of paint but it's not nearly as strong a yearning as that for new experiences. I'd even be cool with FF7 as long as it isnt detrimental to future products, which in my mind, it would be.

I'd like to see old ps1 and even some ps2 games return as digital downloads as well. Stable graphics and gameplay and better controls would go a long way to putting a lot of older games back in the saddle. I don't think there's a need for drastic graphical improvements. It's how I think a certain rpg everyone is sick of hearing about should be done too. Same layout, just crisper and smoother. On a personal note, I'd like to see Decent come back.

RE HD is actually a port of the Gamecube game… Its provenance as a "ps1 remaster" is misappropriated.

I'm pretty sure Ben knows that.

However, I have noticed that many (mostly young) gamers seem to have this crazy idea that Capcom remade the RE1 fairly recently. Not having a clue that the REmake is actually a Gamecube game from 2002.

And that could also explain why some of them also feel that Capcom has what it takes to remake RE2… the reality is that they don't. RE2's director is now at Platinum Games (Kamiya). Mikami, producer of RE2 and the man behind the 2002 remake, also left Capcom.

The fact that the REmake HD looks miles better than Resident Evil Revelations 2 (said game looks like a first-gen Xbox 360 game), speaks volumes about Capcom's current capabilities.

The director of re6 wants to make it. He said the engine is done, they just need to remake the story. Who knows if they would go through with it.

The 2 games that I feel would be awesome and would help the company that created/released them would be square-enixs' 1) Vagrant Story and 2)Final Fantasy XI online. Both are awesome games that an HD reissue will probably garner them more fans.

i've always said HD remakes should only be done for the right games not every game and i always stand by that so the flood gates should not be open for all companys/devs to do this then its gets anoiying

happy gaming
