Ben’s Week In Review: December 7

The PlayStation Experience wasn't quite the earth-shattering event I'd hoped for, but it was still great for fans, I think.

Great stuff coming to PlayStation, that's for sure

There was the new Bloodborne trailer that really impressed everyone and of course, 15+ minutes of Uncharted 4: A Thief's End gameplay . The latter wasn't bombastic but those who knew what to look for would've seen significant improvements and impressive technical achievement.

I really like the look of David Jaffe's new game, Drawn to Death . I couldn't draw for beans in high school, so there were no such doodles in my notebook. But I knew people who could draw, and I also know a fantastic concept when I see one: Bringing hand-drawn artistry to life has always been at the core of interactive entertainment, as far as I'm concerned. Then there was the announcement of a reimagined King's Quest , which really threw me for a loop. The adventure genre isn't exactly alive and well (not in the purest sense of the term), so to see something like this was just awesome .

No God of War or Gran Turismo unveiling, but it seems Sony Santa Monica creative director Cory Barlog spilled the beans

20 years of PlayStation…inconceivable!

It really does seem impossible that PlayStation has been around for two decades now. I still remember getting my first PlayStation; I bought it off a friend. I think I got the system and like a half-dozen games for a hundred bucks in '96, and that included Twisted Metal 2 (one of my all-time favorites), 3D Baseball , Tecmo Super Bowl III , Jet Moto (another all-time favorite), and a basketball game I can't remember. My RPG obsession began not long after with Suikoden , Wild ARMs , Beyond the Beyond , and of course, Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy Tactics . PS2 was another blitzkrieg of greatness and that's when I really started to expand my reach to include all sorts of genres.

Yeah, there's a fair amount of nostalgia behind the memories. But there's a reason for that. We don't remember everything fondly, now do we?

Personal gaming update

I wish I could spend more time with Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix but I'm just swamped. With Assassin's Creed Unity , Dragon Age: Inquisition , Grand Theft Auto V , and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare all just begging to be played, I have to put HD overhauls of games I've already played on the back burner. Okay, so I never played Birth by Sleep , but you know what I mean. Unity alone is taking forever; there's just a stupid amount of content.

Thankfully, though, the game rush appears to have ended for the time being. It'll pick back up in February but at least I'll be able to play catch-up between now and then.

I didn't watch the Experience, but I'm not seeing any new game reveals worth anything you couldn't announce on a Friday news dump. Why do they amp up then let everybody down all the time?

Final Fantasy VII remaster is def the biggest game coming to PS4.

Uncharted 4 footage looks incredible though, ages ahead of what we've seen so far on PS4 and X1.

Isn't the remaster just a port of the PC version released 2 years ago?

I'm hoping it's at least some kind of optimized port. In any case, even if it's just a port it's still the biggest news out of that "Experience."

According to Kotaku it's just a port of the PC version, who in turn were just a port from the 90s, and as far as I understand a pretty sloppy one at it.

I laughed so hard imagining everyone's face just drop when the trailer wasn't making that transition into the dream of a PS4 remake 😛

Saying that if this is upscaled into 1080p and widescreen (That includes the FMVs!) I'd genuinely buy this.

Beam, anything beats playing the original PS version on PS3 with its graphics stretched across 1080p so all the detail is lost. The PC version is at least cleaner and crisper.

It'd be better if they used those updated graphics model patches but it's SE so just having the game on PS4 is good.

I used a whole bunch of mods on PC. This is the one I played last.

PlayStation experience is just meh, I thought we can see the last Guardian trailer or gameplay. And the order look so generic, genericness awaits…

Yeah it was a bit lame. Another instance of the Sony overhype shuffle. You gotta love how they only show The Order in gameplay snippet less than a minute now. Any more would truly expose that game's mediocre gameplay. I've seen "corridor shooters", but Lord, is that game confined.

Who was the genius that thought that the FF7 reveal should have gone down like that? Those faces in the crowd after they realized they were getting the same old game was priceless.

There were some gems. No Man's Sky is breathtaking. Bloodborne looked great. Drawn To Death continues the trend of inventive shooters we've been seeing in games like Sunset Overdrive and Splatoon. Uncharted looked good but took a few too many cues from Tomb Raider for my liking. Until Dawn looked….eh.

The rest of the show was ports and indies. Shawn Layton thinks ports are the proper way to support tue Vita? lol. Come on.

I know a lot of people were pinning hopes to this weekend being some sort of avalanche of exclusive AAA support for the PS4. Gotta be a bit disappointed. Xenoblade and Zelda alone still give that one obscure, underappreciated, little system out there the exclusive edge by far. "Wait until 2015! Wait until the PSX!" now transforms to "Wait until 2016! Wait until E3!" Personally, No Man's Sky is enough to justify the repurchase, which I will do when The Order drops. Hopefully, it's alot better than it's looking.

Genericness awaits, lol. I still think that accusation will be unfounded on release, but we shall see in the reviews. I fully expect Ben to tackle that "generic" issue in his review.

The Street Fighter V announcement killed it for me. I am not a fan of console exlusives myself but anyone thinking SFV console exclusivity isn't a big deal is kidding themselves. Very well played by SONY.

Looks like future mega and ultra versions of SFV will stay exclusive as well seeing as though SONY have basically funded the game. Without them, SFV probably wouldn't have happened any time soon. As a Street Fighter fan, my grin couldn't be any wider at this point.

At first reading your comment when you said SFV killed it for you I read it like that was bad. Then I continued to read and got confused. 😉

I like SO myself but I'm just not good at them.

Didn't I say that Street Fighter IV Ultra would go on PS4 😛 I thought with the announcement of Strete Fighter V they might not do it, but then its Capcom… 😛 What I still don't get is why it is on PC and not Xbox One…

Having moved past Street Fighter, I wish we got an extra special super booty booby version of DOA5.

Vivi it's on PC due to the cross-platform play aspect i believe. X1 doesn't do cross-platform therefore Ono and Capcom didn't bother to give them a slice of the SFV pie.

MS just got Hadouken'd and will pretend not to care like most companies do when they lose a game and will start promoting their left-over crumbs like KI which is quite frankly a fairly average attempt at a fighting game released in a bits n' pieces package.

I didn't watch the Playstation Experience, I just followed it online. I thought it was pretty good showing. I kind of expected more exclusive reveals but then again I don't know why I guess based on the context of the show it seemed like a good time and place to do that.

I'm really excited about Uncharted 4. It looks amazing. The new combat mechanic, the new platforming elements, that amazing ai, it's gonna be awesome!

PGU: I'm enjoying myself running through GTAV. The depth of the game to me is pointless S I'm not scratching the surface of some of the things you can do. I'm just playing the game as I normally would any GTA game. However between the ridiculous amount of time it took to install the game and the unbelievably long load times in sp and online, I'm very frustrated with it. I started playing online and I bet it's 1:1 in time played and time spend looking at a loading screen. That's just insane.

I'm still playing CoD and I'm really excited to start Shadow of Mordor. After that Ill move onto DA:I and spend most of my time with that until The Witcher.

Just watched the Heavenly Sword movie, it was actually pretty good.

Good enough to make me wanna go play the game again; I'm so tired of open world this and sandbox that.

Did anyone really think U4 wasn't going to be amazing? It was actually a nice compliment to the fans that they didn't just show off the top end action scenes. There was so many tiny details in that gameplay footage. You really have to be somewhat educated to appreciate the whole thing.

MGO looks splendid, but only for people with other friends that are into MG. Which I don't have. Besides, why play MG online when you can play the greatest story ever told in VGs? (IMHO)

No Man's Sky looks promising. If The Witcher 3 is complicated I would actually favor NMS.

PGU: Lots and lots of Borderlands 2 and I haven't even started the DLC. Steam was good this week. Picked up Shadow Warrior, Dishonored, and Tomb Raider. That's Tomb Raider 1. From 1995! Hopefully I'll acquire a new gaming mouse for Xmass and then use that for Dishonored. Shadow Warrior is just good old pulpy fun!

U4 looked decent, not as nice as the initial trailer promised (this is a fact actually). I'm actually disapointed at this point. I really expected to be floored. It's not even close at this point. I'm sure over time it'll improve.

but then again I'm not educated enough to know =p

I hate when people say that the PlayStation experience is so far not as good as they inspested it to be. Just a fyi people that was only day 1 day 2 is today as they say save the best for last.

I Cant wait for both Bloodborne and Uncharted 4. Im hoping naughty dog does a remaster collection of the first 3 uncharteds for the Ps4 before uncharted 4 releases i would so buy the collection.

PGU:
Nothing to really report under my personal gaming update. I've been kinda in a gaming road block. I havent played much in the past few months. My games havent kept my attention longer then 2hours then i get bored with them. Heck i cant even remember the last game i completed….

As far as the Playstation Experience goes…

The order looks good but it just looks like something I have played. I won't be buying the game until it drops in price.

Bloodborne is a first day buy for me. After spending 200+ hours in Demons, Dark Souls 1&2, this will be another title where I'll be in head deep.

Uncharted: Looks good. Not as impressive as I would have hoped but then again it's still early. I do like those facial details on Drake.

MGO: Looks good but I don't have anyone to play so I'll enjoy the story all by myself

FF7: It's like SE is saying "HAHA! Gotcha! You can buy this one though, SUCKERS" — I PERSONALLY think FF7 is an O.K game therefore I won't be buying it.

PGU: Still roaming the lands of Kyrat in Far Cry 4 and enjoying every minute of it.

FYI: Best Buy has buy 2 games get one free.

yeah i thought the playstation experience was pritty good but not ind blowing even though i only saw a small bit of it. i've heard good things about the games that i didn't see shown at the show but goood things and awsome games nun the less

as for 20 years of playstation for the most part for me its been a great 20 years of gaming. and i couldn't have really asked for much more(a little but not much)

on a side note me and a friend decided to get child of light on the vita the play co-op along with i think 3 other games. and i got a few new ps4 games as there was some pritty sick christmas deals and on at one of the game retaliers down the road got like 3 games for the equvalent of US $60-65 which was pritty good

personal note still doing the driveclub tour and some rachet 2 here a there inbetween and was doing PoE(path of exile) with my friend

happy gaming
