Ben’s Week In Review: November 2

Happy November! Don't forget that daylight savings ends… 😉

I think general interest in Call of Duty is waning

Amazon pre-orders for this year's Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare are lagging behind last year's Ghosts by 40 percent.

As a result, some analysts are saying the upcoming entry won't halt the downward spiral of the franchise. Now, a few things: First, I don't believe CoD could every completely disappear , and second, I understand that the production values for every fresh CoD installment are through the roof (as evidenced by the new live action trailer ). And you could make an argument that lower pre-orders are a result of neither Infinity Ward nor Treyarch developing Advanced Warfare . Sledgehammer is new and people don't usually like new, especially the casual crowd.

But I've met die-hard CoD fanatics who have no idea who develops these games. They don't care, either. No, I honestly think the reason we're seeing lower pre-orders – and in general, lower overall hype – for this year's CoD is just because people are finally getting tired of the IP. It took way too long but that's to be expected. Once something is entrenched in modern culture, it's extremely difficult to move past it. Looks like the gaming populace has, however, tired of the ceaseless CoD barrage, year in and year out (and all for basically the same game, over and over).

And speaking of "waning interest"…

I know Final Fantasy XV and Final Fantasy Type-0 are coming and I can't imagine two games I care less about right now. Never thought I'd say such a thing in a million years, but I'm not interested in what they're producing now.

After watching the new trailer for Type-0 and some more gameplay of FFXV , I've concluded that neither are even remotely intriguing. Both are just flashy action games with some role-playing depth, as far as I can see, and to be honest, I've never liked the Japanese style. I only tolerated it in old JRPGs because they had gameplay I actually enjoyed. Now, there's just nothing left that appeals to me in the FF series, which is just plain depressing. The strange part is, Square Enix still puts their name on quality products, but they're games they didn't develop. Tomb Raider , for instance. Too bad the new one is exclusive to Xbox One but as I know it'll only be a timed exclusive, I can be patient.

Personal gaming update

Well, unfortunately, I can't dish on the game I'm playing now: Dragon Age: Inquisition . All I can say is that if you're a fan of the franchise, I can't imagine you not liking it. It's more like a proper evolution of Origins as opposed to Dragon Age II , with standard open-world elements reminiscent of Assassin's Creed or Grand Theft Auto . I think it's great so far. I'm sure I broke some embargo rule in there somewhere, but whatever. I've also got Shadow Warrior and Deadfall Adventures to check out, so expect reviews on those soon. For the record, the Inquisition review is embargoed until November 11.

Lords of the Fallen is a good, solid game, but it's not quite what I was looking for. I wanted something closer to Darksiders than Dark Souls . Lastly, I've put aside Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition while I tackle the new Dragon Age , but I'll get back to my Crusader soon enough. I'm on Master difficulty now with my Lv. 70 character and 40 Paragon levels. 🙂

I don't have an opinion about the future of CoD, probably because I don't really care. If CoD stops being the most popular adrenaline paced military FPS, something else will just fills it's shoes.

I do look forward to playing CoD AW's campaign though. I expect an impressive spectacle of fun… though likely short lived.

FFXV is bringing itself closer to stiff, high stakes openworld action-rpg competition. Basically, a japanese dev is trying to carve out something they can call their own in a western owned hive.
I don't know if the series can compete at the level of Bethesda, Ubisoft, Bioware and the guys who do Witcher.
I feel like S-E's more and more niche feeling and looking appeal will eventually just draw S-E into the mobile world and smaller scaled productions going forward. It seems inevitable to me at this point. Even if FFXV somehow wins over some critics (it won't be all of them) I doubt it'll ever recoup the amount S-E dumps into it.

PGU: I can't swear off Destiny. But I'm trying to withhold myself. I've been enjoying TLoU Remaster, and some Drive Club, with the little time I have.

They wasted so much money on this decade plus development of XV they are going to be so far in the toilet they may have to consider a FFVII remake to get money.

yea, but if they remake FFVII it'll be scaled for iOS and Android devices. That is pretty much guaranteed already. S-E knows already that the core gamers who played FFVII back in '97 are much older and out of their target audience these days.

Assuming the target demographic of an FFVII remake remains the exact group of people who bought it 15+ years ago.

A remaster certainly would, I guess. But a complete remake?

Edit: Side note, I just finished Yuffie's side quest after getting Cid. Ever since release, I've been playing FFVII every 2 years without fail. :p It's definitely outdated, obviously, but one thing I've noticed… even by today's standards, it had an absolute ton of different things to do. Very diverse. Tons of mini-games, etc.

I'll still get Type O and XV just cuz they look like fun japanese action games, I do like the japanese style, but clearly they aren't Final Fantasy games. I imagine they will bring in poor sales from the west after the XIII downward spiral. Maybe that will help teach SE, but probably not.

I'm playing The Evil Within, Tales of X2, Tales of Hearts R, and anything else that suits my mood. Sadly nothing has me in that must play addiction state. I'm hoping Inquisition will do that for me, but it still feels a ways away.

We need a JRPG revival this gen. Just sayin.

I feel like FFXV will bring in around 5 million copies. Type 0 will be close to 1 million because of the playable XV demo.

Glad to hear you're enjoying DA Inquisition. I think gaming embargos only apply if you have something negative to say, or even constructive criticism.
I went to preorder the deluxe edition on Friday, and they were sold out at EB games. So I had to go with amazon, which doesn't really make a difference beside a slight bump in the EB loyalty program that takes a decade to see any benefits from anyway.
I think I'll hold off on AC Unity til it gets considerably cheaper. I've been spending too much lately and I think I can live without that one bonus mission.
As far as FF goes, I haven't played one since XII.

an embargo means no review can be published before a certain date, good or bad. Otherwise you risk that company's wrath in getting review copies again.

For a review sure, but I wouldn't call that sentence or two a review.

I preordered AW and I am very excited to play it. Took a break from Ghosts.

Not that excited for the new FF games. The next FF I will play is X on the Vita.
PGU

I finished Far Cry 3 and really enjoyed it. I have FC4 preordered so I am highly anticipating Kyrat on the PS4! I also finished ACIV and loved it. Right now I am heavily into Dragons Dogma Dark Arisen! Wow, what a game! Loving the combat! How I wish this was on the PS4 as the graphics are not the best. However this is a very special game. I won't finish it before CoD but it's great to know I have it for when I need that fantasy fix.

How far are you on Dogma? I was impressed until I realized the towns/people/story were all blah.

I hope they step that up next time.

I think a lot of hardcore players realize that most death on cod that you lose come down to who has a better connection and there waiting for a fix…
Sledgehammer isn't new mw3? . Another bad aweful thing with cod is there leagues they need to dump the current way. Come up with a different solution. I'm just not sure I wanna buy this game jumping around like superman? I'm just not sure about. Rather go back to ww|| era.
I'd rather have the cod with no famous actor promoting it take that money and fix the lag.

As if casual gamers know the names of the developers behind COD. They barely know the name of the distributor.

I am just so happy to read the few words you had to spare about Inquisition this time around, Ben. It really was all I needed to hear.

Ben's risking the inquisitor's chair.

I don't think Ben's risking much. But really, a "proper evolution of Origins"? Stop right there. I need not hear more. It's what everyone wants.

Add a more open map and BioWares wonderful characters, and I need no other game this year. Far Cry? Assassins Creed? Blah who cares. I shall be charmed by ladies in Dragon Age for the rest of this year.

yeah I was kiddin, I agree that's what I wanted from this game too. There was only a couple good things about DAII so I'm mostly gonna forgive and forget.

This will be the game to occupy my at home life I've been waiting for. Wish I had time to finish TEW but I may not.

Beamboom: I'm pretty sure Inquisition is exactly what you want.

It may not be quite as technically advanced or refined as you want, though…

Not as technically advanced… Hmmm… What a riddle. A worrying clue. In what way, one must ask! Thinking out loud here:

Could it be regarding stats and IP spending? I hate it when characters are auto-levelled.
Or too few options within the class skills in general?

Or wearable items – only for looks and no stats? That'd be sad.

Or since it's gone more open world; Are the objects in the world merely obstacles, "dead" set pieces, nothing can be moved or climbed or anything? If so I can live witht hat, I kinda expect it, it would be very typical BioWare if so.

Can't wait for the reviews to arrive, not that I need any in this case, but still. Will be fun to read.

I read it as graphically, very last gen. Or maybe images only render fully close-up.

Beamboom

Hmmm. Think so? Well I hope so cause if that's the case then I could not care less. What I've seen from the videos was more than good enough, BioWare games have never been about graphics anyhow.

Ben Dutka PSXE

Underdog is right. Dragon Age has never been on the cutting edge of visuals, right? It's more of the atmosphere and style than extreme, photorealistic visuals. That trend continues with Inquisition.

Don't worry about the other stuff, Beamboom. I can't go into detail but it's a full-on RPG.

Beamboom
Beamboom

Phew – what a relief! Then I am not worried at all.
Like I said, BioWare has never been about the latest visual fireworks. It's all about story, atmosphere, and above all; Characters.

And I am ultra-relieved to hear that the RPG is firmly in place. Sounds like they really have listened, and done what they do best: Create memorable RPG moments.

Can't wait! I really can not wait.

Hello all, I've been following PSX for years now so think its about time I joined the community!

I was a big fan of COD throughout its early days, MW2 in my opinion was the last truly great one. Since then my interest has dropped off. I took a break with Ghosts (although did try the free trial they did and thought it was poor). However this new COD actually has me pretty excited. I know its become 'cool' to hate on COD but I'm willing to give the new one another shot. It better not dissapoint!

As for FF I won't waste time trying to pretend I know what I'm talking about. The truth is I've never been a FF fan, I'm sure they're great games but I've never played one. I guess it just wasn't my era and having missed so many, It's too daunting a task to try and catch up 🙁

PGU, I've been really struggling for a while to play anything for longer than a few hours total. I don't know why because the urge is there but at the minute it seems to be the thought of playing, as opposed to actually playing, that excites me most. Kind of like a nestalgic feeling. When I was younger I could sit and play for hours at a time but I guess I'm nearly 22 now and clearly with Uni, sports etc I have much less time on my hands (No, not all students are layabouts…). I've missed some truly great games over the past couple years as a result of this.

Anyway, I've just finished with Dust: An Elysian Tale and I must say it's the first PS4 Plus game, besides Resogun, that I've really enjoyed. Not to mention the first game which has held my attention for a long while. I've also started on Tomb Raider DE which I'm having a lot of fun with. Adventure/exploration is without a doubt my favourite genre and TR is a fine example of it. Next up will be Wolfenstein which I've had sat here for a while now, I've got a fair backlog to get through 😉

Welcome to the community 🙂 At your age I wasn't playing much either, you've got a lot of stuff to do. Things tend to come in waves, wait till you're working and need to relax. Or until a game comes that you love more than life lol.

Well first of all I do believe that physical preorders for call of duty advanced warfare r down second I'm pretty sure digital preorders have at least doubled y wouldn't u order it digitally if u have a ps3 n a ps4 u get it for both for one low price n second of all this nonsense about diehard fans not knowing or caring who makes it is stupidity sledgehammer helped make mw3 n most r aware of this I do agree that many probably don't realize they was also part of the group that split off n developed titanfall so lol ya

Still plugging away at Destiny and enjoying it lots.

i have tomorrow off, so at 00:01 hours Advanced War will be declared.

Pretty sure I'll be playing classic mode – not overly keen on the exoskeleton gymnastics – (you can't teach an old dog new tricks and all that)

Be interesting to see at the end of the year which game tops the sales charts – got a feeling the downward spiralling COD will still be in the mix …..

any who i'm not really surprise that the new FF games don't appeal to you teh are more of a J/Action/adventure game now than a JRPG

and with dragon age this one looks more like something i might enjoy but its gunn have to wait awhile

happy gaming

CoD: Advanced Warfare
…is personally of mild interest, but I'm definitely not hyped, nor in any hurry to get it on nor probably not soon after release either. The only ones I currently have are CoD4: Mordern Warfare and CoD: MW2, both which I waited to add to my collection quite a while after release.

Final Fantasy XV and Final Fantasy Type-O HD
… are also of mild interest, but yet again, I'm personally not very hyped for them at the moment. I had FFVII for the original PS, and have XII for PS2. I am probably a little more interested in adding X/X-II HD to my collection as it stands. Somewhat related, I have Kingdom Hearts I and II for PS2. I played quite a bit of the first KH on PS2, but hadn't played any of KHII yet. I do however have KH 1.5 HD Remix and would like to start that, possibly in the near future. So with that being said of KH, I think I'm considerably looking forward to KHIII at the present time.

PGU
… I just finished Castlevania: LoS over this Halloween weekend. I have yet to download and start the DLCs or Mirror of Fate, but the Collection came with a code, so I've added them to my download list and am looking forward to it. I finally found the first F.E.A.R. for PS3, which I wanted to play first before playing further in the series. I usually prefer playing in story order. I've played a bit of the Uncharted 2 mp a couple of times in October (I believe) and it's usually quite enjoyable. I also play Killzone 3 mp, and less so often Killzone 2 mp. I'm not sure which single-player game I'll start soon though, but in the FPS category it'll probably be F.E.A.R., though I haven't finished the first DOOM from the DOOM 3 BFG Edition, nor the first Killzone. Hmmm… Thanks for reading if you have. =)

PGU: Just finished one of the three DLCs for Dark Souls. Took a break from GTA: Online. I'll be playing the other two Dark Souls 2 DLCs until Far Cry 4 releases on 11/18. Since I have plenty of homework due this month, I'll probably be playing Far Cry 3/4 of the time and Dark Souls until Bloodborne and The Witcher 3 in February.
