Ben’s Week In Review: May 25

E3 isn't far off now, is it? Man, I didn't even notice.

The real reason people have reservations regarding The Order: 1886

After Sony released that new gameplay footage , one caught the negative vibe from a lot of gamers. Many called the footage "generic" and generally unimpressive.

However, I think I know why a lot of the "meh" statements were subdued and vague: Sony's trademark is their first-party exclusives. It's PlayStation exclusives that often push the envelope in terms of artistic and technological elements, from Heavy Rain and Journey to LittleBigPlanet , Uncharted and The Last Of Us . It's really what Sony does . Then, we see something like The Order: 1886 and on the surface, it appears to be little more than a standard third-person shooter. One could argue that Uncharted falls into the same category, but that franchise is proven.

For a new IP, I think gamers really expect something explosive and decidedly fresh from Sony. I think such gamers are much more interested in upcoming titles like The Dark Sorcerer (if that's even what Quantic Dream is going to call it) and The Last Guardian (if it ever comes out). There's a reason games like LBP and Journey earned boatloads of rewards. When you look at Ready at Dawn's upcoming action game, it doesn't necessarily seem to push any envelope at all. I mean, outside of graphics. And this is why the response hasn't been overwhelming, in my honest opinion.

Sorry, I don't get the pre-loading fascination

I know the feature has been available to PC players for a while now, and I suppose it's cool that it'll be available on the PlayStation 4 as well. This past week, we learned that one of 2014's biggest games, Destiny , will be the first title to officially support pre-loading on the PS4. …uh…yay? Someone has to explain this to me; maybe I'm not properly understanding the concept. I guess it means that you can pre-order the game digitally, set your console to auto-update, and the game will begin to download as soon as the street date hits. In the case of Destiny , it means you can begin playing at 2 a.m. on September 9.

Okay, I have questions: Have we really become so lazy and so impatient that we have to play a new game within minutes or hours of it going on sale? And we have to have it happen automatically? Who, outside of students, can even play a game in the middle of the night? Hell, even students shouldn't be doing that, as far as I'm concerned. Is this a feature for people with no lives whatsoever? I mean, who cares ? I can't imagine a game I'd want this badly.

Personal gaming update

I'm definitely having a ton of fun with Wolfenstein: The New Order . It's just so much fun to play, and it really does remind me of the good ol' days when shooter campaigns were actually, you know, good . It doesn't do anything new and in some ways, it does feel outdated. Honestly, though, I don't care. It's bad-ass. But I have to get back to finishing inFamous: Second Son , because Watch Dogs will be here very soon, and that's going to require plenty of time. I will also add that I can't wait to see the new Amplitude on the PS4. I loved that game to pieces.

Oh, and don't forget that Murdered: Soul Suspect comes out the week after Watch Dogs , and I have very high hopes for it. Did you check out that new 101 Trailer ?

I haven't really been following the Order controversy. I'd imagine that a good portion of the negativity is coming from XO gamers looking to trade blows. Personally, it looks like solid stuff from what's been shown. I've learned though that in this day and age many big AAA productions just can't be fully understood by looking at snippets of the game play here and there, especially games with a strong single player component and storyline. Chances are the game is more dynamic and more diverse than any one element being shown. Granted, it looks to be primarily a pop 'n fire shooter. But hey, TLoU could be generalized as that as well. And there's a mountain of difference between, say Binary Domain and TLoU.

I understand the pre-load hype for a few things. First, on the business side, they're going to push this as a big thing. It's a way Sony and the publisher can reap all the revenue of a game without paying a retailer.

Next. yes. some people are nuts and play games at midnight and ditch sleep. However, even if they aren't planning to play at midnight, they'll have the game ready to play the very next day. No having to stop by a Gamestop or wait for UPS. It's there on your system ready to go. It does save a bit of time and gas. I happen to live about $5 of gas away from a game retailer, and yes, there's usually no other reason for me to go out that way other than to go there.
Also, downloading a monster sized AAA game in this age would mean waiting over a day on many American's internet connections. That's just long. It's a way to bypass that long digital download wait.

It will be interesting to see if/how much the press who has played it/seen it hypes The Order. That often tells you how good the game really is. That will matter a lot and the XO trolls will rebel, which will raise the profile of it even more.

I think the Order looks great. It looks better than uncharted does, and yeah uncharted shooting looks generic. Know why? Its the same concept. you aim and shoot. I think the real reason people are upset is because the gameplay showed human enemies, not aggressive and mean werewolves or sparkling vampires. Its going to be a great game so long as they don't give more human on human combat rather than what we all want from it, the mythical monsters.

I played DOA5 and Mass Effect 2 and 3 all week. The hype bubble for Watch Dogs is growing everywhere around me and its hard not to buy it right away but eh. I haven't not bought a new AAA game day 1 in a long time. It'll be interesting to see everyones reactions when I won't have anything to say about it considering I won't even have it. I did forget about Soul Suspect and i'll be getting that day one at least. I just want a game where I can be a cop and do cop things. It'll be nothing like that but close enough, kind of… Not really.

The preloading allows games to be downloaded earlier and ”unlock" on release day at 12:01 am. It makes sense for Sony to push this, GameStop's pie is pretty big and this is a selling point to get a bigger slice.

I agree about The Order, or at least in part. Temjin is right too, you simply can't "get" a great single player game from watching a snippet of combat. Tomb Raider is excellent but you could show a minute of the same pop n fire footage and it would also look generic. I do hope it does more than the standard things though, we Ben says we want the envelope pushed somewhere.

I couldn't care less about anything preloading.

PGU: Finally graduated college, man it was a long slog but I have my BA. Then I beat that bastard Seymour Flux!!! Now my team is back on the road to take down Sin.

Drakengard 3 is fun and raunchy and even a bit Nier-like but I can't believe they released it in this state, it's a technical disaster. Still cool though for Japanese lovers.

Popped inFamous 1 in just to make sure I was right and everyone else was wrong about Second Son and wow it's a totally different game. Climbing, platforming, cover shooting, strong unfolding plot, a feeling of power behind the shooting, tons more powers. I friggin love it!

I started a new campaign in Bound By Flame so I could have two running, one pure and one giving in to the flame demon. Well, I accidentally overwrote my original save and killed like 17 hours of gameplay. Fuuuuuuuuhdge.

Gonna play Mindjack over Watch Dogs; much better 😉

While you may be right in the assumption for the reason that people feel "meh" about The Order trailer, I think everyone is missing a couple very important facts. One being E3 is right around the corner and they have no reason to blow their E3 presentation with a trailer before the show. I'm saying they are saving the best for later. Second, it was a very, very small glimpse of footage. We knew very little about the game for a long time and this was nothing more than to give gamers a feel for the gameplay. My favorite thing about the gaming community is they like to judge things by short pieces of video footage. It's ruining gaming. Like it or not, it is.

That trailer actually looked really great and was great insight as to how gamers will be interacting with the gameplay. I'm very excited about this game now. I held my reservations until I seen something like this.

PGU: Like World I will be getting my degree in 3 weeks. Finally! Well I've taken a break from FF14. After much enjoyment the map became to cumbersome for me. I'm probably in the minority because my buddies have little issue with it. However the lack of a way point really creates a disjointed gameplay. I spend more time trying to figure out how to get from point a to point b than actually doing the quest. That left little time to do things like building my armorer and blacksmithing stats. So I've put it away for awhile.

I'm just going back and forth now between games I haven't finished yet. I finished AC4 the other night. Brilliant. For the first time aside from Brotherhood I'm actually satisfied with finishing it. The others felt like a chore while this was a genuinely good time. I loved that the assasins story was more of the focus this time rather than Desmond. The series really struggled in that regard until AC4. Very good.

look hes the thing i understand what people are worried about but i don't think its actually wprth worrying about that cos i can see what to look forward it this game and too mee thats the improtant thing at this time and thats the new ness that the order brings to the table despite the 'standard TPS(3RD PERSON)' in my humble opinion.

happy gaming =)

not only because its a new IP, but also because we have new consoles, which have been out for roughly 7 months now, and were still yet to see ONE game that represents what next gen is, that says this is why you need a new system, there is no way in hell that would be possible on ps3!
people are deflated on the order because it looks like every other "next gen" game, not next gen at all, just last gen with a coat of lacquer.

whole point of preloading is it allows you to download and instal the game days before release, that way come release date you can actually play the game instead of wasting what little time you do have to play it on installing it!
one thing that really bugs me and makes me wish i had a larger download limit so i could steam download my games, instead of having to waste time going to the shops, then have to waste the hour or so i do have to play the game installing the freaking thing!
then you turn the game on the next day, oh theres a steam update theres another hour gone.
and you turn the game on the day after, oh theres a driver update.
AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!
3 days pass, and you have not played ONE MINUTE of the freaking thing!
so f*cking oath preloading is a much needed thing!

really enjoying the gameplay of wolfenstein.
besides the moronic AI, and far too large levels turning it into a maze, it can be so much fun!
im a bit disappointed about the story though, everyones been riding home about how awesome it is.
i cant get into it though, one thing i hate about so many games is the characters somehow become faceless.
its constantly making a case of ohhhhhh look, that character what a reunion!
and im like, wait, whos that again?
kinda hard to care about your teammates, and these characters, when you cant remember who they are!
the storys pretty 'blah' because of how faceless and forgettable the characters are!

I think for their first major title in The Order, Ready at Dawn should be commended for what looks like a fantastic effort. Only time will tell how fantastic it turns out. I don't think they'd be wise to give away too much too soon.

With regards pre-loading on Ps4, it's just CONVENIENT.

PGU: The battle of the backlog continues: finally completed Far Cry 3. Also finished Brothers: it's a lovely indie game. Now onto Metro and hope to try to platinum The Last of Us.

Pre-loading makes total sense. Imagine a game that you want to play on release day. While you're sleeping, it downloads, ready to play in the morning. Easy.

I can't wait to hear more about The Order, that and what ever new game GG is working on. In fact while we're at it some more news on The Last Guardian would be nice. A Shadow of the Colossus with current gen controls/graphics would be enough. And wtf ever happened to Kojima's "Project Ogre"? don't think we've all forgotten about that one.

PGU: Too many games, too little time. Same story different PGU I know. Unit 13 is so done and over. Uninstalled it and everything. Ultimate Pixel Junk Monsters HD and some PS4 for now. Finally beat Shadow Fall. Still think it's an 8 when I hoping for another 9.7. It's a great tech demo I guess. Wolfenstein is in my to but list. I don't have the time or money, but there is so much going for it.

Really need to hold off till E3 is over to see what lies ahead before whoring out my credit card anymore.

Question: Did I miss the Limbo PS+ vita dl window? Really want that right about and it's not showing up on my instant game collection vita page.

I am on the fence with The Order 1886
simply because I haven't seen enough of it yet. An extended demo playthrough will give me a better indication if it's for me.

For someone with a fast internet connection pre-loading seems like a viable and great option to have especially with standby mode. Sadly with my internet connection I solely stick to the indie games such as Transistor, speaking of which;

PGU: It's great. Music is stellar, the atmosphere is palpable and the setting is unique and everything is just what I should want. So why am I struggling to play it? I seem to jump in and out of gaming lately. I always keep up with the latest gaming news but in terms of playtime I seem to now only be able to enjoy short bursts before my attention wains. This is coming from someone who will blast through a Final Fantasy story no problem. Perhaps work has changed my outlook on free time. 14 hour shifts the past 3 weeks have kept me from doing anything significant so the fact that I have 3 days off (including Tuesday for Watchdogs)should have me giddy. Instead I just don't care, I should but I don't.

So my question to the PSXextreme community is this; Is it the games or is it me?

I'm in a very similar situation as you. To answer your question, it is both. Games are becoming too much of the same and you are growing up/caring less. The only way to try and cure it is to just tackle the game no matter your mood. After a while you become engaged in that session, but it dies off soon. 🙁

Playing online with an acquaintance or a friend helps me elongate my session.

I think the order looks pretty good, I love the graphics, the story, the setting and just everything I have seen about it. As long as the gameplay is fun and varied I'm sure I will have a blast. I hope there is a lot of fun paranormal stuff both in terms of the story and gameplay diversity.

Preloading is good if you are going digital and want to play right away, but I still prefer discs for everything that isn't on my PC.

PGU:

Drakenguard 3….where do I start with this one. I have so many weird feelings when I play this game. I am really interested in the story, and like the humor and vulgar nature of the characters. Combat is generally fun, except for the dragon sections. I figured out how to cheese them, but they feel very unpolished to me.

I think the games biggest problem is the frame rate which isn't even that bad compared to some games I have played, but the frame skipping is what I have my problem with. You will be running the game will freeze for a split second and then you will appear 3 feet ahead of where you were. It doesn't happen often but when it happens in combat it is a huge pain.

I also can't help but compare it to NIER which I think is the better game so far, both in terms of framerate, and gameplay variety.

Still having a lot of fun with it and am hooked on the story, but I was hoping it would have been a little more polished like NIER was.

Pre-loading keeps it fair for people who can't get to a Gamestop or Target. Plus most games never actually hit the PS store until around 5:00 PM on a Tuesday so for the hardcore it allows them to jump right into the action with the early birds. Although it does need to allow you to play at exactly midnight on the release date. I remember COD Ghosts didn't let me play till several hours after launch. So midnight expressers got several hours on me.
