Ben’s Week In Review: March 30

A week filled with the new inFamous: Second Son and the classic Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remake . …things couldn't get much better. 😉

Uh…are we sure we WANT PS1 games in 1080p HD?

I'm all for sprucing up old games, especially those that deserve to be replayed. But I know what some of my PS1 games look like on my HDTV. They look like crap, mostly.

So, when I heard that we might be able to play PS1 and PS2 games in full high-definition on the PS4 , I said to myself: "Uh, do we need that? Do we want that?" With some PS2 games, sure. I mean, look at how the FFX/X-2 HD Remaster came out. However, when it comes to something like Final Fantasy VII , for instance, I'm not sure HD will matter much. We'd just get sharper, shinier version of blocky, pixelated characters, right? Hey, I love those characters as much as anyone but I fail to see how high-def will make them more appealing.

I think we might be going a little overboard with this high-def remake/remaster idea. I'm aware that it's very easy for most developers and publishers to slap a glossy new coat on an old game, re-release it, and make more money. The problem is that many times, I'm just not sure it's necessary. Those PS1 classics won't benefit from a HD remaster; they'd need a complete graphical overhaul from top to bottom. Everything would have to be redrawn, basically. And we'll never get that.

Wasn't too impressed with those 100+ games coming to PS4 this year

I understand the concept: Release a master list of PlayStation 4 games to combat the cries of "there's no games I want!" Having "100" in the title is eye-catching and generally, it makes people feel better. At the very least, it ups the anticipation level, even without looking at the names on that list. However, personally, I wouldn't release such a list until there were a few more big-name, AAA titles to add. The problem is that hardcore gamers know what's big and what isn't, and most of them will be unimpressed with that list. As for the casual gamers, they're not reading the PlayStation Blog, anyway. So what's the point?

I'm not saying I regret having the PS4. Certainly not. And I firmly believe the PS4 will have the best and most diverse assortment of titles this generation, as PlayStation has had every generation, in my opinion. I just wouldn't go bragging about our "100+" games when most in-the-know consumers will glance down that list, shrug their shoulders, and go: "See? Not much of anything yet."

Personal gaming update

Oh, like you didn't know? LOL It's all about inFamous: Second Son and Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster , but the latter seems to be absorbing more of my time. It's just so glorious to indulge in that gameplay style, which is virtually nonexistent today. I wish someone would've told me that Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons isn't a co-op game; I tried playing it with my girlfriend, only to find out it's not co-op. Talk about confusing; that game is tailor-made for cooperative play! So, we just went back to Dragon's Crown , which she really likes, and we haven't finished it yet.

The cool part is that I'll have plenty of time to catch up. As I said in that drought article , there's really not much between now and the end of summer. That's good, too, because my backlog is starting to get a little ridiculous. Based on some of the replies to that piece, it's clear that many of you are suffering from the same problem. 😉

I'm going to disagree with you about having PS1 games in 1080p. It's something I've wished for when the PS3 was running a software emulator.

I don't think people have been firing up PC-based emulators and upscaling PS1 games for years because of how horrible they look. There are a lot of PS1 games that have a lot of details that didn't show up well (at all) in 240i/p. Having these games running, even upconverted to 480p helps convey a lot.

I do want the PS1 emulator, having seen what great good a PC emulator does with those games is amazing. They bring out a lot more detailed textures and solid poly shading with high resolution. They look awful now because it's just a stretched version of the downgrade that the PS1 hardware tended to give to the underlying textures.

Same is true with PS2, that system didn't show all the great details underlying their games either.

I would actually like to play some PS1 games in high def. If anything it might get me to play them again.

I think they did right by releasing the list. From a business standpoint it makes total sense. Also as a consumer and as I glance down that list there intrigue. What worries me is that Sony's studios seem to be falling apart. Yes I'm exaggerating a bit but there's a lot of things happening that is a little discouraging. This could have an adverse effect on future releases.

PGU: I'm on my last term of school so I haven't been able to play anything as of late really. I did download Dead Nation for PS4 and played that when I had some time. There's a few server issues but otherwise great co-op fun. I never finished it on PS3 so… I am going to finish AC4 before I pick up inFamous: Second Son. This usually wouldn't happen as I tend to get games on day one but with the next game I want not coming out until June (Damn you drive club), I can wait on it, to fill the void. I'll be interested in Watch Dogs but I'm not sold on it yet. Elder Scrolls online, aand Destiny are my two summer games.

By the way does anyone know how well FF X/X-2 sold compared to the latest FF entry? .

No reliable figures for the remaster yet, but VGChartz pegged it at 147k in the US in the week to March 22. Same site puts LR:FFXIII at about 270k to date in the same region across both platforms. Current worldwide figures are approximately 690k (across PS3 and PSV) for FFX and just under a million across the 360 and PS3 for LR.

Hope that's illuminating for you.

I know it's impossible, but I wish the PS4 was backwards compatible with the PS3. I would have one if that was the case, because dat backlog…

Personal Update:
Need to find a way to stop procrastinating… It took me more than 36 hours of "work" to do my latest piece of assessment: an annotated bibliography of six sources. That's just terrible.
Finished Spec Ops: The Line. I liked how cerebral the game was, and some of the imagery was really powerful. As a narrative experience, I recommend it most highly. However, I felt as though it was let down by the core design, particularly towards the end where there is this endless barrage of enemies and you're lucky if you can make it from one checkpoint to the next without dying half-a-dozen times. It just became an exercise in frustration at the end…
So now I'm writing this while I wait for Mass Effect to install. I'm actually kind of excited about embarking on this adventure, considering all the good things that I've heard about it.
Peace.

id love to see ps1 and ps2 titles spruced up in HD, id do anything to be able to play crash team racing without feeling like pouring sulfuric acid into my eyes!
but i can see this, just like playstation now, being extremely restrictive with what titles are available.
and thats just going to destroy the point of this.
emulations such a tricky thing, not only do you have to worry about performance issues, which apparently is pretty woeful and buggy still, but you also have to worry about licensing issues as well.
theres so many ps1 and even ps2 games out there whos original license holders no longer exist, or have changed through so many hands, so finding who legally owns the IP now, and cracking a deal to get them onto the programs going to be a freaking nightmare!
so you have to ask yourself is it really worth the effort?
id love to see it happen, but understanding all the problems its going to cause, understanding all the resources its going to take, you really have to wonder is all that worth it when the net results going to be a very small library, and sketchy performance?
hell 5000 dollar extreme PCs STILL struggle to emulate games in full HD efficiently, so how the blazes is a 500 dollar underpowered box going to do it?

no one was really.
kinda pointless having any number of games, especially when such a large percentage of them are indie games, and the rest very doubtful that they actually will hit this year.
the order for instance everyone whos seen it says there is no way in hell its going to be ready to release this year!
allot of people are still waiting for a reason to buy a ps4, hell allot of people are still waiting for a reason to not sell theirs!
$ony better hurry up and give us that answer, otherwise there going to find themselves in a really bad place!

shocked how well MGSVGZ has been selling, i mean all my local stores are completely sold out!
just goes to prove what cliffy b once said, haters will hate all the way to the cash register!
oh well, gives me more time to try plat south park.
really hope we see a sequel for that its got so much potential!
this time i just hope you get to play as one of the characters of the show, and theres alot more dialogue between them.
what made the show so funny and enjoyable was the constant banter between the kids and the constant banter between the adults even, but you see so little of that in the game.
what happened to cartmans constant ripping on kyle because hes a jew?
hell i first chose the jew class because i thought that would open up a whole other kettle of worms with cartman constantly ripping on me, but nope.
why?
what is it with companies these days and taking the best things about something and removing them?

I hope you still get to play A Tale of Two Sons. I played through it last week and loved it. Amazing visual design, excellent music, and a memorable, albeit brief, story. If not for PS+, I would have most likely missed out on it entirely.

so i felt like updating a story i posted here a few weeks back. if anyone remembers my gf had bought me a logitech g25 racing wheel and mount for my bday. originally the shipment was messed up by logitech. she shipped it back and when i posted last we were waiting for them to ship us the wheel and mount with a keyboard and mouse we had added with the credit they gave us.

now the second time they ship the wheel, only we dont get it. UPS delivers it to the wrong apartment. in the same apartment complex, wrong apartment, wrong building even. so management goes over there with her and talks to the husband that lives there. he said the wife was home at the time but shes not home. they wait for her. later they ask her she denies it ever showed up. UPS had her sign for it. police get involved now and question neighbors. they tell the police they were invited in by them and they had it all set up and were using it.

now facing felony theft the husband asks the police and my gf to meet with him, we dont know why. turns out he had recorded conversations with his wife asking her to return the stuff. she will not do it. she has already pawned stuff. tells him, he has it recorded, plays it for the cops and my gf. the cops head to her work and arrest her on the spot. the management of the complex filed to evict them. no one has seen the wife since. court is this friday.

i just wanted to play gran turismo 6 with a wheel 🙁

I wouldn't mind a nice HD remaster of Fear Effect 2: Retro Helix from the PS1. That would be pretty awesome actually.

Agree about the 100 games, I read through that list and only spotted about three titles I might be interested in. Oh well I don't have a PS4 yet and probably won't get one for a year at least. Might as well wait until there's a nice library of exclusives for it.

I mostly played Assetto Corsa on PC this week. Great little racing sim. It's just in beta test but there's a pretty good variety of cars and tracks to keep me occupied. There isn't any career mode yet so I'm just picking a car and a track and doing some laps. There are quite a few achievements for getting a certain time in a certain car on a certain track so that's something to work on. It's got extremely realistic handling and I've never driven on most of these tracks so there's definitely a learning curve to it.

Yeah that list was kinda pathetic but it's to be expected so early on. I takes almost a full year before a new console gets going.

PGU:
Still one more month of school and the first thing I'll get will be Dark Souls 2. I am interested in Brothers too.

@ frylock most of the time the UPS man walks up 2 the door doesn't read u an address or ask u ur name hands u a clip board u sign it at that point whatever he had u sign 4 is now yours its not theft it the UPS mans fault so if anything u should get the UPS guy fired n u really didn't have to go through all that those ppl all u had 2 prove is u didn't sign 4 it n they had 2 send u another 1

the reason you have to sign for the package is so they have proof someone accepted it. if it was ups's fault they will then send their lost/stolen claims people. UPS is not going to just buy us over $500 worth of stuff if they can track it down and recover it. any way around it these people were going to be charged with stealing. you cant just accept someones package and keep it. at least not here you cant. if it was something cheap UPS would have just replaced it, not worth the time. over $500 is a little to much to just let go.

Re Brothers, if you were happy sharing a controller, it could be coop without too much trouble, just give your GF one side and take the other yourself? Not sure whether it'd work in practice, but maybe worth a shot?

Lol ya but obviously UPS knows where the address is cause u got a package u returned so its the UPS mans fault 4 going 2 the wrong door he should be suspended or fired n he's suppose 2 ask if that person lives there n most of the time they don't even say who its for unless u ask I mean I see ur point u want whatbu ordered but its not ur reposibiliyy u order u get n I would refuse 2 take an item some1 else was using either longitech or UPS would have to replace it w brand new

It's sort of illegal to take mail that isn't yours. Any company licensed to deliver mail carries it as property of the country it's currently accepted into the mail system in. If you take mail that isn't yours (signing a document saying you are the intended receiver) you are committing a felony.

While in postal's possession, it is technically government property. You can't destroy or steal government property, believe it or not.

I know this because when I was 15, I put a slushie in a mail box and destroyed 11 pieces of mail. I had to go through a restorative justice program in order to erase the felony charge.

Messing w the mail is yes USPS but UPS is a private company hired 2 deliver packages n isn't the same its there problem if they go 2 the wrong address n don't ask 4 that person I mean there probably suppose 2 ask if the person lives there but rarely do n if not ask its not my obligation 2 try n track u down 2 get u ur stuff if I say I put it on the curb 4 the trash man since it wasnt mine thats the end

SASSYGIRL82

And yes I do agree its illegal 2 steal a package that's sitting at some1s door but if ur handed a package n not asked 2 confirm ur ID or if that person lives there then ur not at fault 4 accepting it yes returning it would be the good thing 2 do but I wouldn't spend my time 2 return it like he said it was a lot of stuff but my time is valuable n I don't give away my free time

Underdog15

Unfortunately, whether you agree or not is completely irrelevant. It is illegal.

When you sign for something, you aren't just writing your signature on a blank piece of paper. You are signing "I agree to the above terms and conditions", one of which, is you claiming the package as your own.

Pretending something is yours that isn't is theft. And the LEGAL thing to do is say "I'm not signing my name on that because it isn't mine"

In fact, you should probably never sign your name on something as official as federal documentation to something that isn't true.

Call it malpractice, if you will.

and you may think this is not illegal but the police here sure as hell do. so do the landlords as they are being evicted. they werent being evicted before all this happened. they dont just ask you to sign in the box for no reason.

also lets not forget that it wasnt just accepting the package. she opened it and sold the contents of the package. that is now selling stolen property. you cannot sell property that did not belong to you. she was very stupid and left a paper trail the whole way.

not really sure why your so bent on this not being illegal.
