Ben’s Week In Review: March 23

A seriously huge week of releases and some big news, too!

Sony still struggling to meet PS4 demand…good or bad?

The company has yet to meet "full supply production" and the conservative estimate is that this won't happen until summer . So, my question is: Is this good news or bad?

Considering it from the optimistic side, this means that PS4s continue to fly off store shelves, thereby pushing Sony to keep manufacturing systems. However, the pessimistic (or rather, skeptic) side says, "Well, Sony's not making enough PS4s to sell; hence, the sales aren't going to be very high." So, which is it? Is the PS4 still hard to come by because everyone keeps buying it the instant it becomes available, or is it in "short supply" just because Sony isn't making enough to sell? I'm guessing it's a mix of both, but I'm really hoping that they're at least trying to meet demand.

If I've said it once, I've said it a million times. You can't win a sales war without enough product. I always thought that if Sony could manage to keep up with demand at the start of the new generation, they'd be just fine. The debacle that was the PS3 launch taught them a few lessons, I'm sure. However, I was sorta hoping they'd have reached "full supply production" by now, especially with another great PS4 exclusive now available.

Yeah, I'm probably psyched for Assassin's Creed: Unity

I say "probably" because I suppose there's a chance that Ubisoft could do something monumentally stupid with the first next-gen entry. You know, like make it entirely online or attempt to implement a mechanic that simply doesn't belong. If Unity is simply bigger and better in every possible way, with improvements made to AI and some of the free-running control, I'll be plenty satisfied. That debut teaser didn't really tell us much, but it did look amazing. All the more so because it's only Alpha footage…

I should also remind everyone again that these games are on two- and three-year development cycles. Unity , for instance, has been in development for over three years, which is good news. I also really love the idea of playing during the French Revolution; Paris (and indeed, the rest of Europe) at that time was insane . I hope the designers take full advantage!

Personal gaming update

Well, what I feared would happen has happened. I managed to finish off Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes because it was quite short, but I can't seem to stop playing Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster . Even with inFamous: Second Son sitting here (review coming Monday), I still can't tear myself away from FFX HD. Yes, I've been playing Second Son ; it's just that the greatness of FFX has once again bewitched me. Oh well, so I'm a little sidetracked. So what? 😉

As for that virtual reality tech , as I said before, I want no part of it. In my estimation, it will only further hasten humanity's decline into something unrecognizable. I'm sure it might be cool in brief snatches but of course, that's not what's going to cause the problems. And yes, there will indeed be problems…serious ones. Of that, I'm certain.

I don't see that it needs to be classified as good or bad. People who want the system will get one sooner or later, regardless of Sony's supply. And considering that they've well exceeded their sales estimates to the end of the fiscal year, Sony is in a pretty good position with the PS4. Also, even if Sony can't offer supply to meet demand, they've already outstripped the WiiU's lifetime sales, and are currently outselling the XBO at a rate of approximately 3:2 worldwide, as a general rule. I reckon they'll do fine, but they do need to start promoting any other games that look to be coming out within the next eighteen months, because I daresay that the XBO is looking more attractive on the exclusive front.

Sunset Overdrive, Quantum Break, D4, Fable Legends, Halo 5, Forza Horizon 2 (rumoured) and Gears of War being pitted against Uncharted 4, The Order, Deep Down, DriveClub and GT7 (at some point). It doesn't really offer confidence in the PS4 exclusive line-up. And I'm intentionally discounting indie titles-some are great, but most are also available on PC, so most people aren't buying consoles for them-and some other titles like Lily Bergamo, Natural Doctrine and Yakuza Ishin, because they don't really have the same appeal as the core titles listed above (even though I desperately hope all three make it westward).

In terms of sales potential, the X1 exclusives definitely have the upper hand, sadly.

As for Unity, I'm interested. Love the idea that they're going back to Europe and the French Revolution is a brilliant setting. Would prefer the Napoleonic Wars, just because, but it's still awesome. Just need to get around to the rest of the series… I'm so ashamed of having bought almost every game to date and only played the first. I'll get to it… EVENTUALLY!

Personal Update:
Uni work has started to ramp up and I'm having trouble mustering the enthusiasm to focus on it as much as I should. It's just too easy to get distracted. *le sigh*
Played a bit more of Spec Ops. I'm still not getting it. I'll probably get started on Mass Effect once I'm done with it.
Peace.

I've also had a hard time pulling myself away from FFX hd…. I so so so love this type of game. We've had absolutely nothing of that calibre in that genre this whole generation. EVEN as a PS2 game originally.

I am not worried because if there was a system I wanted badly I would continue to hunt for it. I would become obsessed until I found a PS4. They are out there you just have to dig. I wouldn't buy a a console I don't want because the one I do want isn't available that's for sure.

I am excited for anything Assassin's Creed. Unity set in Paris will be beautiful especially now that it's all current gen. Hopefully this means more robust AI and a better more challenging combat system.

Can't stop playing inFAMOUS Second Son! My son and I have been having an absolute blast! We finished it tonight. It was so amazing and of course it isn't over. We are going around to all the side missions and having more fun. I will start my Evil play through after I have mopped up all the blast shards and side quests. 4 powers was the sweet spot. Neon is absolutely bad ass beautiful! Radiant Sweep FTW!!!!! That's all I will say. I will probably put 50 hours or more into this game easily. So this is what the PS4 has in store for us this current gen. So happy cannot wait for what else is in store for us gamers with the PS4!

Also wanted to give a shout out for Steamworld Dig on the PS4! Wonderful game that is very addicting. If you are on the fence, get off and buy this gem. It's missing cross-save and it's a little short. It does offer Cross-Buy however. You just have to choose either PS4 or Vita and then go with it. However, the package is so well done I can over look these minor grievances.

I'm glad to hear more positive stuff on second son. Played the first and thought it was ok, but didn't love it. But I'm dying for a ps4 game (the free ps3 plus games the last fee months have rocked). I tried to buy it this weekend at two different Targets but neither of them got and to sell yet. Weird?

Stay Classy PSX…

I've been playing DmC on my laptop, while waiting for the inFamous review. Back in the day, I was the biggest DMC fan, and this was my first NT title, and I must say, it rocks. I am totally feeling the Psx award for sound in this game, amongst so many other elements well done in this game. Also, I'll be getting back to Black Flag on the PS4. Gorgeous game.

I've been fighting the urge to pick up inFamous, just b/c of my backlog of games. I wanna take my time with it, but depending on Ben's review, I may change my decision when to get it.

Happy gaming, folks.

its strange its so hard to find there because most shops here have had it in plentiful stock for months!
not to mention the $ony stores have always had it in stock i ordered quite a few of them and they always arrived 3 or so days after purchase so they were hardly in short supply!
either $onys holding back units to make it look like its in short supply, or they seriously overestimated the stock they would sell here.

im skeptical for the new AC.
firstly they say next gen starts here, but if i had a nickel for every time a publisher just said something and did not deliver, id never have to work another day in my life!
so ill believe it when i see it!
secondly they seriously need to upgrade and change the gameplay, just hiding in the conveniently placed haystacks just does not cut it anymore.
they need to come up with some other clever ways for people to sneak up on unsuspecting enemies, maybe it wouldnt be such a bad idea to bring in some of the guys from splinter cell blacklist.
that actually added some really cool new gadgets and stealth mechanics, maybe they can infuse some creativity into the tired stale AC formula.
lastly the story, they need to go back to the beautifully complex but well thought out and executed story.
they have been stringing fans along for FAR too long now its time to end the arc, answer all the questions raised since AC1, and that way next years AC can start with a clean slate.
but how much of that will actually happen, eh im not holding my breath.
i wouldnt be surprised if unity ends up being what every other next gen game is, same old ps3 game just with a shinier coat of paint.

bit the bullet on friday and bought second son because im so bored and theres nothing else to play!
i was trying to use the excuse of ground zeros and yaiba taking up my time, but then both got delayed till next week.
sigh.
really wish they didnt because SS is exactly what i thought it would be.
actually, no, somehow worse!
SP completely destroyed 2 by stripping all your powers at the start so half the game your really missing them, then when you FINALLY get them back there watered down so much there barely recognizable!
SS is even freaking worse!
its nice that now you gain powers quickly, but there FAR too weak!
R2 is basically useless it takes far too many hits to kill 1 enemy, and thats another problem.
in infamous 1 your basic hit exploded on impact so it damaged multiple enemies, but with 2 and SS they dont so its a 1 person atack and a piss weak one at that.
then you have L2 which is pretty useless all it does is disorient enemies.
and now the best power in the last 2 games, the rockets, are now limited to 3 shots!
WTF!?
so EVERYTHING they have done is to make things WORSE and more restrictive.
WHY!?
when did restrictions and making things worse make a better funner game?
your a f*cking superhero your suppose to feel powerful, not like a freaking ant!
speaking of restrictions once you do gain the neon power, you now loose smoke for a while, and when you finally get it back you have to switch between the two by sucking up whichever power you want.
so your on a rooftop and a enemies bugging you far away, so you run away find neon and suck it up, than go back to the rooftop, and kill him, and now everyones close so you run away and find some smoke and come back.
its just f*cking stupid, its like oh sorry i dont have any powers ATM could you kindly just wait while i go find the power source i want?
WTF cant you switch on the fly?
seriously!
honestly SP could not of ruined the game anymore if their lives depended on it!
so f*cking pissed off to see my most favorite new IP of last gen to be watered down to this sh*t!
and people say crapcom and RE are bad.
ill take crapcom and RE6 anyday over this watered down restrictive annoying frustrating tedious bullsh*t!
so tempted to find the biggest smelliest fish i can find, jump on a plane to seattle, and slap some sense into these freaking morons!

People like this person here is why gamers have gained various negative stereotypes over the years. Do we have to sign a petition or something Ben so that we don't have to see this "persons" wall of text anymore?

He writes code and is studying programming like a few of us on here. So he's in a position to be a person who is actually going to affect games/make them.

Be careful.

Ps4 is selling very good and it came recently out in Japan, that will also be a reason that they are still struggling with demand.

PGU:
I finished Fallout New Vegas with all DLC about 1,5 week ago and it was great,to bad i now have to wait so long for a next fallout.

i'm playing Thief[it has 8 chapter's and i'm on chapter 7],i like it!
The exploring, loting so that i can buy upgrade's and more importantly tools that i can use to reach other area's is great, also the control and athmosphere and the stealth-options are very good.
Is it perfect:for me no,i play it on normal and it's a bit to easy, the next time i will try it on hard maybe that will be better then.
Also the story is a bit shallow.
But the exploring/loting part and also the athmosphere and the stealth-options are the most important for me,so overall;i like it!

Having sound issues with Infamous – got music and explosions, but no voices so I've had to turn on the subtitles.
Titanfall is an absolute ton of fun – worth the $499 it cost me …

Just an FYI……

I read yesterday that Best Buy is about to be getting a shipment of 400,000 PS4's within the span of the next 3-4 weeks.
So those still looking for one, I'd advise you all to start calling your local BB every day to see when their new PS4 stock has gotten in.

I'm happy to hear that the new AC Unity's going to be in Viva La France. But I can no longer afford any games(or a PS4) any more, so I haven't been able to play any of the newer AC's other than the 1st four games, AC1, AC2, Brotherhood, & Revelations, that were already sitting there in the backlog pile of my games library. So no MGS: Ground Zeroes or Second Son for me either. *sigh*

My PGU:
Since I finished both, Tom Raider & FC3: Blood Dragon this past week or so(loved both BTW), I've had the urge to go into my now semi-retro PS2's backlog to help get my TR & FC3:BD retro swerve on.

So….I'm playing the PS2's TR: Legends & I'm now part way into the 7th mission in Nepal.

And once I've beat Legends, then I'll be jumping into the PS2's TR: Anniversary, & then on to the PS3's TR: Underworld.

The Ps4 shortage is why im glad i got my Ps4 the week it came out. Now im not waiting.

im super excited Assassin's Creed: Unity. It wont be helded back by the Ps3 & 360 like Assassins Creed IV: Black Flag was. So i cant wait to see what ubisoft does with its true next-gen game. Speaking of that im reading all around the net that people are hateing on ubisoft because Unity is only on Ps4, XBone & Pc and not Ps3 & 360. I mean really if you dont have a Ps4 or XBone by the fall of this year then theres something really wrong. Dont hate the game just because you dont have the right system to play it on.

PGU:
i've been playing infamous second son on my Ps4 since friday morning and i've been really enjoying it so far. Along side that since the the tease of Assassin's Creed: Unity i've been replaying Assassins Creed 2 on my Ps3 inbetween infamous second son sessions. i plan on replaying the entire series leading up to unity.

As much as I like some of Ubisoft's IPs, the Watch Dogs debacle really made me skeptical of the bullshots they release. I think I would still buy Watch Dogs, but I hope that the final version of The Division would look like the trailers they've been showing since it was initially revealed.

I forgot to say that I bought both Infamous: Second Son and Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD Remaster. I've been looking forward to playing an FF game that is not part of the awful XIII saga and this fits the bill perfectly.

And Second Son made me pre-order the game… even if I don't have a PS4 yet. That should say something about really liking something. LOL

I've just begun playing Final Fantasy X HD after completing Ground Zeroes – Which I enjoyed and was content with the purchase. As for Final Fantasy X, I am enjoying it but the music really lacks Oomph! I never had this problem with the Kingdom Hearts HD Collection being re-recorded, but some of the tracks on this sound out of tune. Also… I was really worried about Tidus' character model… however that actually looks fine, it is Yuna that looks even worse than the original character model and I have to admit everytime I see it in a cutscene it does stick out…

Beyond that though I am really enjoying it, Just up to Kilika – Question I'd like to ask other people playing Final Fantasy X is what Sphere Grid did you choose, I chose Expert this time as I have never tired it before 🙂

Ben Dutka PSXE
Ben Dutka PSXE

There's really no way any of the character models look "worse" than the original. The HD upgrade alone eliminates that as a possibility; just put in the PS2 version to remind yourself of the gap. 🙂

As for the Expert Sphere Grid, as I said above, it basically just gives you more freedom in terms of character advancement.

The PS4 is the top selling console by far. I don't see how not being able to keep up with demand is a bad thing.

As far as virtual reality I'm slightly interested in it. Playing something like an Elder Scrolls or Fallout game, with your entire field of view filled by the game might be pretty cool. I suppose you'd need headphones too as having the sound come from stationary speakers wouldn't make much sense as your head was moving around. I'll wait and see if they live up to expectations and how much they cost.

PSU: played some F1 2013 this week. It's okay, I liked F1 2010 better. Maybe it's just because it was new back then. This is basically the exact same game with the exception of maybe one track, and the menu structure is just confusing. I HATED that awful driver training thing you had to go through at the beginning.

Picked up Bioshock Infinite for $7.50 so maybe I'll get going on that this week.
