Ben’s Week In Review: February 23

Putting the Lightning Returns debacle behind me and focusing on Thief . That is all.

Totally on the fence regarding The Order: 1886

I always applaud new IPs, especially when they come from one of Sony's uber-talented first-party studios. Furthermore, I have no doubt that Ready at Dawn's The Order: 1886 has a boatload of potential. I'm just not ready to leap aboard the bandwagon and the weird part is this:

I'm not really sure why. Can't put my finger on it, so my reluctance remains at least a partial mystery… I mean, I saw the new footage this week and I guess it's good. I really enjoyed the historical aspect of the trailer and the gameplay had a lot of promise. It wasn't quite cohesive enough for me, but I got the point.

I just can't seem to come to any sort of conclusion. I'm not speaking of the conclusion one can reach only after playing the game; I'm talking about the conclusion we all reach after viewing preview material. We end up saying either, "Yeah, that's for me," or "eh, not so much." For me, I'm very rarely waffling; I usually know after the first few trailers if it's the kind of game I'm going to like. The Order: 1886 is an anomaly. The potential is there but right now, I believe it has a 50% chance of being a top-tier AAA title and a 50% chance of being another generic third-person shooter. No in-between.

Isn't that strange?

Oh, like I wasn't going to mention Kitase's FFVII remake comment…?

We actually haven't heard much about this ongoing torturous story. For a while there, I thought it was dead. Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on your interpretation of producer Yoshinori Kitase's comments, the Final Fantasy VII remake is back in the news . Now, on the one hand, it's disappointing because he's giving us the same excuse/reason we've been hearing for a decade: They just don't have the necessary resources. The project would be absolutely gargantuan, they'd need all the original team members back (still have no idea why this is necessary) and of course, the requisite motivation. Yeah, heard all that before.

But on the other hand, I don't think I've ever seen so much emotion on the part of Kitase. Based on the wording of his statement (i.e., "I would love to do it"), I'm actually a little encouraged. I don't remember any Square Enix executive saying anything about whether or not they wanted to do it. They just always told us why they couldn't. Now, the game's producer is saying that if it were attempted, it'd be the equivalent of his "life's work"? Doesn't that sound like someone who really, really wants to make it happen one day?

Or, is Square Enix just leading me down the primrose path yet again, at the end of which I get clobbered with some piece of action junk called Final Fantasy XVI ?

Personal gaming update

I had a lot of fun with that Left Behind DLC for The Last Of Us . I've been saying it for years: Naughty Dog is simply a cut above. As for all that ruckus about Ellie kissing Riley, I'll just say again that Naughty Dog gave the press the 100% correct answer , and leave it at that. A couple great downloadable games on the PS4 definitely had my attention this past week; Outlast was legitimately freaky and extremely well done, and Strider represents the return of an iconic classic. Double Helix preserved the game's retro core while implementing a fair dose of modern slickness and depth.

But like I said above, this week is gonna be all about Thief . Bring it on!

I get the unsureness about The Order, but I'm going to take a little leap of faith and say it should be quite excellent what with so many Sony resources behind Ready at Dawn. It's going to have to be a lightning strike like Uncharted or TLoU to make it to franchise proportions though. Me? I just love historical mashups and new tech. For some reason I have no immediate interest in Thief, although I should.

I think it's best to let Final Fantasy lie in its grave where Square Enix put it.

I'm retro gaming until Tales of Symphonia HD drops next week, then it's off to wonderful JRPG land for this cowboy.

The interesting thing to me, is how everyone has reacted to last weeks footage of The Order.

IGN was the worst, their Senior Playstation editor basically said he was very worried about the games future, basing that on the fact that last weeks demo was having performance issues and because he thought the game seemed very generic and empty.

I'd like to remind all those people that the game is still very far away. Ru, the founder of RaD, told everyone at the start of the demo that it was based on a very early, and not optimized build of the game. Also this was only 2 minutes of gameplay, I don't think we can make ANY judgments based on 2 minutes of gameplay featuring ONE sequence.

Let's wait till E3, where we will no doubt get a tonne more footage.

And Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2. I'm really interested in your review. You seem more honest and not biased. The other sites seem so hung up about the steath section of Castlevania that its all they whine about and tear the entire game down because of what 1/10 of the whole game in its 20+ hr plus has. They also say the modern setting is lame. The reviews seem childish, immature and hastily written.GI gave it a 6 and Edge gave it a 4, a 4! no game unless its completely broken deserves that low of a score. Edge reviews everything lower though. Anyways I look foward to your review Ben.:)

Thanks, but just bear in mind that I wasn't the biggest fan of the first one, although it certainly wasn't worth a 4. 🙂

Outlast is absolutely nuts. I don't ever think I've been more scared, simply because you have no way to defend yourself – it's an excellent twist to the survival horror genre.

Also free for PS+ users is Remember Me, which I think is a lot of fun when you give it to me for free. It definitely had some high goals, and it does fall short of them, but I think Dontnod did a pretty good job on it. I do liken it to Enslaved because both had lots of ambition, but just missed the mark slightly on execution. But both have great stories and are fun to play and I would recommend picking them up if you havent played them yet.

1886 the Last order could be decent or could be just another shooter

as far as FF7 goes square Enix is just mentioning it just to keep peoples interest nothing else whether Kitase is serious or not he was probably just told to tell the press it just to shut them up

as for your comment on FF16 well your quick to judge something that isn't even announced and you really should wait until you play FFXV before judging FF
13s saga most of agree isn't FF Keyword Most

PGU i recently started Phantasy star portable 2 and can't wait til the 25th for tales of symphonia chronicles and castlevania LOS2

I am not really sure how i feel about the order. it looks cool but i need a lot more than what has been shown to make me say yes.

so my bday was on the 6th of this month. my gf wanted to do something really nice for me so she bought me a logitech g25 and a mount for it. she called logitech and talked to them without me knowing. it was to be a big surprise. it didnt show up til 2 days after my bday. ups screwed up and only delivered one box of the 2. we had to wait days to get the second box only to find out they shipped the wrong wheel and mount.

she flipped on logitech. she went back and fourth with them. sent it all back. they got it back and saw how badly they had screwed up. now she spent a LOT of money. if anyone knows the g25 its not cheap. logitech ended up giving her a credit for 75% of what she spent with them.

she is so mad at them she doesnt want anything and says i can use it all to get things i want. at this point i still dont have my wheel and mount. but when i do get them on monday it says, i should have the solar powered wireless keyboard they make. also the new wireless gaming mouse they just put out. on top of that i still have over $200 in credit with them. not sure what i should do with it.

i will be getting my ps4 in the next week or so. super excited! not sure what i will play first but all i care about playing is infamous.

MGS3 and MGS4, Dishonoured, TLOU and Metro: Last Light. All played so pitifully by me to show that I am rubbish at stealth. I keep buying them but my brain hasn't got a stealth switch. So Thief is not for me..
Can't grind and I can't hide. Sometimes it is better in the long run to admit your failings and keep on walking.

Ben, agree with you on Order 1886. I think we just need some more gameplay/information. Secrecy always makes me wary.

As for Final Fantasy, what can I say that hasn't already been said. Still makes me sad though 🙁

Still have to play the Left Behind DLC and I do HAVE to play it 😉

PGU: So how was my first week with the PS4? Well….

Killzone Shadow Fall: Oh dear. I wanted to like it so much. Don't get me wrong it's a decent shooter and it is very very pretty but it just didn't take any chances. The plot felt as if it served to keep the action going which is so disappointing considering the political intrigue had possibilities. The characters were also just empty shells. All in all I want a sequel but it needs to be more than a graphics showcase.

Outlast: Nope. Nope. Just hello no. After half an hour of play I just deleted it. Let us never speak of it again. I don't need the nightmares 🙂

DC Universe Online: Actually finding myself getting quite addicted to this little gem. A very balanced free to play system and it has a great archive of lore to draw from. Very exciting. It is a pity that the game world itself is pretty bland. That Character Creator though…..drool

The best thing so far is the console. God it is just such a sexy piece of Kit. Never have I been just so enamored with a console. I really do look forward to having more to play on it.

I just want to finish by saying I love the Playstation Nation and I really love PSXextreme 😉

But I will still be getting Titanfall 😉
(and if you have a 3DS I got two words for you; "Fire Emblem") You're welcome 😉

I love the amount of secrecy there is with games these days. I am sick and tired of knowing what an entire game is about before I even play it.

It's like with movies, most movie trailers show the best parts of the movie in their trailers.

I like having little awesome surprises. I miss the days of not knowing if a game was good or not until I played it.

Admittedly I am hyped on The Order, but I worry that something that can be so incredibly good and fun, maaaayyyyyyy fail. I hope not. Even if it is deemed mediocre or generic, hopefully it has potential and that it will spur a greater sequel or others will like the theme and it will inspire them to develop a steampunk-like game.

Still, we do not know what the game will be like other than from the released trailer and gameplay. I still think it will not come out until next year after xmas for a March launch. I could be wrong and they are playing it smart by not showing too much.

Would be nice to have a bit more bang for the PS4 game library. For now PS4ers have Second Son to look forward to and that looks like awesome.

Keep playing!

I've said enough about The Order already. We simply need a proper trailer (that will likely come E3) the will give us full disclosure as to what it is this game is really about.

I'm very excited for Thief, I loved Deus Ex HR.

PGU
I finally beat Ico in the HD collection. I had forgotten there was no saving after you separate from Yorda. So I had to play through that final stretch twice. For a game that's over 12 years old it plays very well. I'm very upset we have no Last Guardian.

I've prebought the Order so no going back. I love Gears of War so this looks like my kind of single player game.

Now the Titanfall beta is over – I have to say i'm impressed. It plays great on the PC with a PS4 controller so there may be no need to stump up $500 for an xbone just yet.

Going to start the obligatory tacked on BF4 and Ghosts campaigns today and try to power through them over the next few weeks before Infamous comes out.

I downloaded the Left Behind DLC yesterday and plan on playing through it shortly. Knowing ND, it should be pretty excellent. Played through the Titanfall beta some and thought it was pretty fun.
