PS3 To Be Fully 3D By October, Music Unlimited For Europe

The PlayStation 3 has been able to run 3D games since June but the machine doesn't yet have the ability to show Blu-Ray movies in 3D.

But come October, the PS3 will be a fully 3D-compatible console. As Sony reported during their ISA 2010 press conference in Berlin, the PS3 Blu-Ray player will be updated with stereoscopic 3D functionality in October. It will arrive as part of an impending firmware update for the system. Movies that'll support this feature will be "James Cameron's Avatar," "The Green Hornet," and the next "Spider-Man," and that's only the start. Of course, bear in mind that you still need a 3D-capable HDTV… Second on the news list is a gift to European PS3 owners: it's a new cloud-based music distribution service, set to be launched later this year. Known as Music Unlimited, it will provide users with "millions of songs stored and synchronized through the cloud," which ought to appeal to tune buffs everywhere. They didn't announce any pricing details at the conference.

There was also no news of Music Unlimited coming to North America, so Euro gamers have the edge this time around. We're more interested in finally turning the PS3 into a fully functional 3D machine; will you be ready for the next step in video technology?

I will not be ready for the next step in video technology. Costs too darn much. Glad to hear the PS3 continues to be the biggest baddest monster on the block, but… like… the next Spiderman hasn't even been cast yet and The
Green Hornet isn't even in the theatre.

Actually the next Spiderman has been cast, but no worries, it was a terrible choice.

Could care less about cross game chat,it really isnt that big of a feature.Having it on my 360 was cool at first but its not really necessary. All that Sony is giving us at the moment is far more important than cross game chat.

Gimmedat… are you sure, from where I am standing Sony has slowly been removing features since Playstations' introduction.

I have lost my beloved Linux access, and also PS2 backward compatibility. It was very handy to have those features. For the Slim crowd they got all that taken away as well as 2 extra USB ports. I still have 4 thank goodness, and PS2 backward compatibility… but my Linux has gone…

P.s. Someone did said the phrase "Could Care Less" two days ago in another comment section… If you COULD care less, that means you care more than the minimal amount…

The correct phrase is "COULDN'T care less", people!!!

I'm a huge Sony fan, and as much as I want this service to succeed, it is highly unlikely that it will come close to competing with Itunes.

Don't you think?

I read Spiderman will be all about the teenage drama and not much about the superhero. The writer of the article was worried about a Spiderman meets Twilight movie. That would be frightening indeed.

Um, so Sony is going back on that they had said the update was coming THIS month? Some sites even dated it for Sept 12.

F*** them and their delays. *pissed*
I'm pissed with Microsoft, and I'm now pissed off at Sony. To both I offer a double ..!.. >.>

Guess that leaves out Nintendo, and there's nothing they can do to piss me off because I don't care about them! LOL

To my knowledge Sony has never announced a specific date for the 3D BluRay firmware update for PS3, so I'm not sure why you are getting all wadded up over it.

I know that there is a fashion these days treat every minor setback or annoyance as if it were a catastrophe, but come on, you're just manufacturing a reason to get annoyed now.

Zapix
Zapix

Sony since June have said the update would be in "September" "September" "September." Not October, not November, or whenever they actually decide to release it. If you notice above, there's no set date in October either. But for months they stated September. I know Sony never dated the 12th, although some websites had been claiming that date which happens to be a Sunday. Although that Monday would have made sense considering that the following day the Sony Pictures movie Monster House would be available in Bluray 3D… Which I am assuming with every day that passes that Sony doesn't release this, they are losing potential sales on the already released Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (also a Sony Pictures movie) and Monster House. If there was more media available, I'd say screw it and just go buy a Panasonic 300/350 bd player.

That leave very little time for me to get prepared for 3D, I'm still working on getting my own place again. I also agree, even though I live in the States, its about time Sony showed Europe some love.

On a side note, i'm still pissed we can listen to our music playlist in the background anymore. WTF is up with that. Its like searching the galaxy for droids, and when you finally find them some jerk tells you the ones you found aren't the ones you are looking for. How would he even know??

Don't know why Sony is even mentioning Avatar 3D btw as the movie is apparently going to be an exclusive with Panasonic for buying a Panasonic 3DTV. If that's the case that it's going to be exclusive at first, they deserve the same treatment Ubisoft deserves for their recent PC DRM strategy…

TheHighlander
TheHighlander

What the *&%&$% are you on about? If the movie is on a BluRay and it's in 3D, then it has to use the *standard* 3D BluRay format and will work on any compatible player. There's no exclusivity there at all. Panasonic might be bundling the movie early as an exclusive pack in with their products, but that's an entirely different thing.

Zapix
Zapix

Exactly what I meant, it's being bundled with the TV, never said it had to be played on a specific brand TV. Damn people are so sensitive here.

Probably a 6 month agreement would be my guess. I don't even want to guess what they movie will be selling for on ebay. It'll end up for download just as fast though.

I won't be going 3D anytime soon… It really is not at the top of my priority list… I guess we will have to wait and see the take up, but I think this whole 3D push is going to need a long long gestation period.

I believe it will really take off when TV's can show 3D without glasses. I have seen prototypes at some trade shows and it looks awesome. When these babies are unleashed onto the unsuspecting public they will certainly make waves…

Yh, and aprently sony are also working on 3D's without glasses now.

So im gona wait a couple of years, i'd hate to buy a expensive 3D tv now which needs glasses only for them to be dropped for the ones where glasses aren't needed.

not only sony lots of other companies are, toshiba being one of them.
there already out in china, but very small and very expensive!
give it 3, maybe 4 years and it should be worldwide at a reasonable price, as in same price as todays 3D TVs.
its why i still have not, and wont buy a 3D TV, my 3D PC monitor is more than sufficient for now.

Love Sony! The only feature I would be overjoyed to hear hit the console is custom tracks and playlists being played in the background of all games. There aren't enough games that support this feature for this to even be a feature on the PS3 console. The only game I have that allows custom soundtracks is Superstardust HD. Revive this feature please! It's practically extinct at the moment. Yet it could make our gaming experiences that more memorable and different!

TheHighlander
TheHighlander

Sony won't do that because the feel that it's at the artistic discretion of the developer. Imagine – for example, the effect of doing away with the soundtrack of Flower. Of course Flower is not typical, but you see my point. In games where the audio is part of the totality of what makes the game, custom sound makes zero sense. On the other hand, there are probably more games that could benefit from custom sound, than games that would not. What Sony does need to do is remind and encourage developers that it is available in the SDK, so that more use the feature.

Happy to see the progress but @ this time saving a house is more important to me than a new tv but I know once the 3D tvs come down in price just like I waited for the LCD tv I have it'll be worth it. Still trying to find the cash for a new PS3 🙁 didnt' get my holiday bonus yet oh well soon enough probably just in time for the move bundle. then I'll save to repair my old 20 gig console 🙂

Buy the time 3d TV's drop to a reasonable price. We will be on the next gen PS4 console. The only way I'm getting a 3D tv anytime soon is with the help of the old trusty Ski-mask.

Good, they have a new firmware update coming… Maybe now all of my games will stop freezing. Ever since FW 3.41, games have been freezing way more frequently. Started the day i downloaded the the new Firmware. Let's hope they don't brick our playstations with this new update.

TheHighlander
TheHighlander

Games freeze primarily for one reason, and it has nothing to do with firmware.

The reason for most games freezing is that your HDD has picked up some corruption somehow at some time. It could have been months ago, but only shows up now when a game is using that specific area of the HDD for it's cached data or game install.

Every time there is a firmware everyone with a slight flaw in their PS3 (same thing happens on 360) blames the update. But the thing is, if there was a flaw in the firmware update it would affect everyone in the same way, not just one or two here and there. The truth is that 99.9% of the time, the flaw was either already there, or developed soon enough after a firmware upgrade that the user associates the failure with the firmware – even though there is no connection.

id suggest use the in built backup manager, format the drive and reinstall your content.
its a good idea to do some maintenance every once in a while to keep everything in check.
i do that every 3 months to stop things getting scattered.
plus if your system is out of warranty and am handy with a screwdriver id be a good idea to take it apart and give everything a good clean.
the main cause of YLOD is the heat sink paste flakes off after a year or so, causing poor contact and the CPU overheats.

thats what happened to my ps3, i took it down to my local repair shop and he told me allot of ps3s, especially the 60GB models since they run the hottest have heat sink issues.
that, and dispersing the dust out of the system will ensure you years out of your system.
its amazing how much dust can coagulate over a few months, i clean mine out every 3 months and only in 3 months theres a fair bit in there.
so id hate to see what a 3+ year console looks like!

TheHighlander
TheHighlander

That thermal paste issue is a bit overstated though. The majority have no issue even 4 years in. However, I would *love* for Sony to partner with some service organizations to do physical preventative maintenance of PS3s that are 3 years old or older. Basically do exactly what you said, open the case, clean it out, clean the fan, check the fan motor, and replace the thermal compound with something that has a very long stable life. They have that new extended warranty, which is great for newer consoles. But use older console owners need something. If they were to partner with third parties, they wouldn't have a warranty obligation, but a lot of less technical users would feel better about having their system PM'd.

___________
___________

im not so sure about that.
i took my slim apart for the first time last week and the heat sink paste on that was already fairly worn.
as i said above a local repairer i know weve been friends for quite a while and he says he gets 2 or more ps3s a day with the YLOD, and more than 3/4s of them are caused because the heat sink paste has flaked off causing the CPU to overheat.

DjEezzy
DjEezzy

Hmmm… But it's pretty wide spread. Alot of people have had this issue. In fact the same exact issue i've had. And they started after the firmware update. Also, was it not the firmware that bricked a bunch ps3's with upgraded HDD's. Is that why they re released the firmware 3.41 with a fix for it? I'm not saying I don't believe you. I'm just saying it's a bit suspicious. Of course the firmware did release right around the time when i downloaded the metal of honor beta and it seemed like after i installed that beta things started going awry. It still works most of the time but I'm definitely getting more freezing issues since the update and beta download.
It does seem like you know a bit about this though. Would you happen to know how i could maybe fix it if isn't the firmware?

___________
___________

nah, it did not brick any systems allot of people were having errors when changing the HDD.
i got the same thing, re downloaded the FW, formatted the new drive and i was set to go!
as i said above backup your content and format the HDD, if its still running slow than it could be a overheating issue.
is the console hot to touch?
with my 60GB if you stand the console upright, on the back of the system where the vents are mine was so hot i could not touch it without burning my hand.
the day after that, the YLOD decided to show up.
if the console is hot to touch, than theres a serious problem and a call to sony is in order.
i ignored it, and paid the price the ps3 is designed to run hot, but not that hot.
