Ben-DutkaIf Sony does indeed announce the PlayStation 4 this week, nobody will be all that shocked to see a price drop for the PS3 soon after. It's only logical.
And according to what Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter told GamesIndustry International , the PS3 Slim will receive a…um…slimmer price next week.
When asked when we should expect a PS3 price cut, Pachter first replied- "February 21," which is of course the day after the special PlayStation Meeting, during which the new PlayStation is expected to be revealed. In a second note, Pachter said the PS3 will fall to $199, and Microsoft will likely drop the Xbox 360 to that same price by the start of E3. There's no knowing when exactly the PS3 will fall in cost, but it's basically inevitable that it'll drop when the PS4 hits store shelves. Don't forget that the PS2 sold extremely well after falling to that sweet $199 price point; PS3 sales could surge as well.
You might also start seeing some fresh bundles for the taking; there's already the upcoming Legacy Bundle for God of War: Ascension , for example. Gotta love that Garnet Red PS3.

This is why I would love a job like Pachter's…making the easiest predictions on the face of the planet…
I noticed that the both Future Shop and EB Games had the 160 GB slim PS3's at $199 this past Saturday. Not sure how long they've been at that price for.
I wouldn't mind a few extras.

Hmmm, I'm not sure why but maybe my net & phone is still on "only" because they can't kill it from the office, and/or they don't want to pay any overtime or holiday rates to their workers for doing it during this past Saturday's holiday weekend?????).
Anyway, I expect that they'll be hitting me with their kill-switch tomorrow when everyone at Verizon is back to work.

I recently moved into a bigger house…I wouldn't mind picking up another PS3 (I love the media features).

Everytime this happens i think to myself "Hm i could use a ps3 in another room in my house." How much do small tv's cost? I should buy one for my bathroom. Be playing games while in the shower. Now THATS next gen 😛

there doing the same as what there doing with the vita, dropping the price just before big games like the last of us release thus eliminating the sales spike they would of caused.
should of waited till the ps4 is launched, then drop the price that way every games had its chance, its time to help increase sales.
not to mention there releasing the blue, white and red ps3s in 3 days, so those would of helped cause price spikes as well!
Not really, they priced the super slip with 12GB of flash at $199 when it launched in the EU. The cost of an HDD is what? $40 for Sony? If the manufacturing yields on the chipsets improve slightly and they can drive the costs down elsewhere, spending $40 on an HDD rather than $10 on the flash might well net out to zero, leaving them the ability to put the PS3 with HDD out for $199. It would certainly be a sweet price point.
Incidentally, I would put money on the PS4 (or whatever they call it) being more or less twice the current price of a PS3. So if the PS4 launches in November, look for the PS3 to drop to $199 sometime between now and E3 to give it a nice sales boost and the PS4 to be $399. then again, Sony could make the price of the PS3 $249 for a 500GB system which would put the PS4 at $499. Either way, I think that is going to be the range of prices and the timing is likely to be PS3 price change before E3, PS4 launch in time for the Holiday season 2013 – price will be twice the current PS3 price at the time of launch.
little over the top, not wait till the ps4 launches but at least wait till say august so TLOS, and hopefully beyond two souls, and others have had a little time to work their magic.
especially TLOS, if theres one game that will help push the ps3 its that!
and not to mention we MIGHT see TLG still scheduled for ps3 at E3, hey i can dream!
as i said, there doing what they did for the vita.
they waited till there was already going to be a sales spike because theres these games people will really want, not to mention the new colors, and tried to spike the sales again with the sales drop.
there playing 2 cards to do the same effect, will they stack or will one be wasted?
IF dust 514, beyond, all the ps3 exclusives due this year are released by E3 than announce the discount then.
if not they might be better off waiting for gamescom that way they have time to work their magic, and also dont forget playstation does always sell best in EU so thats where the biggest benefit should be.
