Even though we've seen rumored information and other pseudo-official details concerning Bungie's new project, it hasn't been officially unveiled…until now.
The Halo developer has formally announced Destiny , which is a first-person shooter headed to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation; it's dubbed a "shared-world shooter" and Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg believes it could be something awfully special:
"Very few games transcend their medium and their genre to truly become a part of popular culture; to belong in the time capsule as something that we can all share. And we believe Destiny could become one of those games."
Bungie co-founder Jason Jones said Destiny is a little beyond what you're used to, a little beyond what you might expect. Being able to build your character from the start is part of the experience, and he added that "if you enjoy shooters, Destiny is going to be the best game you've ever played." That's quite the bold statement but hey, Bungie kinda knows what they're doing in this genre, wouldn't you say?
The game will boast a persistent world but it will not require a monthly fee. Hirshberg confirmed that Activision has no intention of charging gamers any subscription fees to play Destiny , but he also wouldn't talk more about the planned business model. Jones added that the game "breaks molds by throwing away the traditional playbook, including the idea of main menus." Obviously, this is a title designed around the concept of multiplayer, although Jones did say that playing solo is "totally valid."
Now we just need to know when Destiny might arrive on the PS3. Early information points to a timed exclusive launch for the Xbox 360 this year; the PS3 version would release some time in 2014.
Related Game(s): Destiny
I am intrigued
This article is pretty small, compared to a lot of the reveals that have been posted around the net.
The game will have a 10 year story span, and will be totally persistent.
It isn't built around multiplayer, it is a semi-MMO, whereas you can play the game pretty much anyway you want, but the idea is that it is a persistent universe. It is 100% viable to play the game Solo, co-op or multiplayer.
Bungie really have set their hopes high, if they pull this off, we could see a totally new genre appear. The blend of elements would be amazing.
For those interested in hearing from someone who got to see the Bungie game first hand:

Powered by Activision.
I'll pass.
Yeah, I know I said in a recent post that I won't support anything published by Activision, but I will remain on the fence until all of the details are out in the open fo all to see.
Even though Bungie claims that there won't be a monthly subscription fee to play Destiny, I can just see Activision making Bungie slap a micro-transaction system into the game.
They could have almost endless opportunities to charge fees for things like armor, weapon, ground based vehicle, and space based vehicle upgrades and customizations for those that can't wait to earn them the hard way.

Does it upset you that Activision makes so many successful games?
Reminds me of halo but more awesome!
I dunno…
MGS4, Uncharted 2, God of War 3, Killzone 2, Heavy Rain, Assassin's Creed 2, Mass Effect, Gears of War 3 and Halo 4 were pretty amaze-balls!!
If Destiny can top those games, I will be mighty impressed. If they're just aiming to top Halo Reach (Bungie's last game) shouldn't be too difficult to do. 😛

No. Work on something better. Not interested at all in these social types. Im a very sociable person. If someone wants to text i say "What's wrong with caling." This is my generation of 18-20 year olds and i prefer face to face over this new line of texting and im-ing. What is wrong with going to a friends house and hanging out. Whats wrong with calling someone instead of texting. Whats wrong with video chatting instead of im-ing. I use something called bluetooth and ALL phones have it. Damn kids should get with the times. Haha i sound like an old timer and im a kid…
You saying to get with the times but the times are why people are IM'ing and such now-a-days instead of calling. Technically I think you need to get with the times, even though I agree with most everything you said. Change isn't all good.
Meh. Halo + Star Wars MMO? What else ya got?
Can't say I'm not interested, but the "living world" is definitely not an entirely original concept. What they do with the idea will be what defines their goal in mind. Definitely will take a watch-and-wait stance here.
What could ever be bigger than Halo? Hmmm… Call of Duty? Grand Theft Auto? I'm sure there are others.
always on connection required.
sigh.
way to go waste millions of dollars and all that talent bungie!
when will companies wake up and realize not everyone lives in japan with ADSL2+ speeds and unlimited usages, with a constant reliable connection?
hell, just because of the f*cking 10 minute drizzel, i wouldent even call it drizzle, my internets been down all day!
so im going to go spend 100+ bucks on a game, plus the inevitable subscription fees even though they say no, so i can be locked out of a game because of our useless weather?
yea, good luck with that!
biggest waste of talent since when $ony walked into team SOHO, said wow you have done some AMAZING work with this, and the fans are tripping over themselves for it!
were pulling the plug, heres a crappy camera and a fluffy toy turn that into a game.
It's a persistent online world. How could you possibly make that without the online requirement.
do what every game this generations been doing, have a campaign and a MP mode.
bungie has such a knack for telling amazing stories and really good characters, im really going to miss that!
Statistics prove that games being online is worth the money. The most successful game franchise of all time is only THAT successful simply because of it's Multiplayer (COD). 3 of the most played games on PC are all multiplayer, WoW, Starcraft and League of Legends.
You really need to understand what they are trying to create though, a persistent universe with a 10 year span. Most countries in the world are already a decade behind in their broadband infrastructure, and few seem to want to improve it. We can't hold back innovation because of stingy governments.
Shit, even the NBN in Australia is meant to be finished by 2020.
While I am a total advocate for non-digital distribution only consoles, because you are right, the world isn't ready for THAT, BUT there is a huge difference between an online game, and DDO. Next gen games will easily surpass 50gb's.
EDIT: Also like to mention that Bungie also said that you can play the entire game Solo if you so desire, it is fully capable of being played any way you want. You will still need the connection for the persistent universe, but you can always do whatever you want.

and that has what to do with my post?
all i said was bungies always had a knack for creating great characters and stories, bringing out a MMO just spoils that.
Why the heck are they making a game for the current gen that's not due for release until 2014?
Unless, of course, the X720 is delayed by a lot. But I fully expect my PS3 to collect dust in 2014, and not one single game will make a change to that.
The article said its releasing for 360 and Playstation. I interpreted that as it wasn't being developed for the next xbox (atleast for now), but the Playstation reference didn't have a number so… now im thinkin because MS wants first go at it itll release on the 360 first, just so they can say they have it.

Yeah, there is no way that they are building this huge game for current-gen tech only.
I'd say they are working on both PS3 and PS4. If it is going to release in 2014, 90% of Playstation owners won't have adopted the PS4 yet.
Do you know what I like best about over-hyped games? The hype.
I hope it works out for them.
Can't play the video at work. I'm lost, so is this going to be of the FTP model?
I watched the video a few times on the PS3 and needless to say I am interested in what this game could bring to the table.
looks promising! An MMO-ish shooter looks really neat. I also like the setting.
ive been playing the alpha for this on ps4 and wow. just wow. this game is so sick, it has so much potential. if bungie plays their cards right, destiny could be a cod killer. but overall, this game has my money all over it. even though game play is extremely limited, you can tell its gonna be a monster of a game.
