All Those Guilty Pleasure Games Don’t Get Enough Respect

You know, I'm not even sure why we call them "guilty pleasures." If this hobby is all about entertainment, how can the games that make us smile also make us feel guilty?

Okay, so it's true that in order for a title to qualify for the label of "guilty pleasure," it has to be sorta low-brow or pandering in some way. And chances are, it isn't of the same quality as other more polished productions out there. So maybe that's why we feel a little embarrassed for enjoying these lower-end games as much as we do.

But seriously, we should pay respect where respect is due. If the game made you keep coming back for more, if you played it because you desperately needed to relax and unwind, and if you always had a super fun time, then why feel guilty? Yeah, I played Dead or Alive: Xtreme Beach Volleyball quite a bit. I actually did like the volleyball but beyond that, it was just utterly relaxing in every possible way; I had this private little island resort and it was always beautiful and always filled with beautiful people. There was a pool and a beach and even a jungle. There were hot chicks in swimsuits who always seemed a tweak away from getting together in a variety of…interesting ways.

So? It was a game that let me unwind after a tough day. I remember Tecmo saying it was designed to be a "leisure experience" and that's precisely what it was. And I'm sure there are quite a few games out there that have done the same for other people; games that didn't go over well with critics, games that you might not want to admit to owning. But when alone, you turn to them knowing full well that they have exactly what you need. So please, a little respect. Let's pay homage to that fantastically delicious piece of entertainment known as the "guilty pleasure."

Somewhat off topic. When they come out with the 3rd rumble roses I just hope they don't call it rumble roses xxx. Calling the 2nd one rumble roses xx was silly to begin with. But that is easily one of my top guilty pleasures to enjoy. Even though I don't feel the slightest of guilty :3

I love me some guilty pleasure games, DOAX is one of the best. Lollipop Chainsaw was another. Hyperdimension Neptunia mkII. I think of the Atelier series as the same thing; mainly because I know if a normal person walked in while I was playing it they would laugh and me and ask why I'm playing a game clearly meant for a 12 year old Japanese girl. But to hell with em! I do this to have fun, not to be cool. I just happen to be cool all on my own 🙂

You know sometimes you just want to just sit back with some mindless entertainment not always sitting at the edge of your seat playing some AAA title that's all super intense. Especially after work.

different type of "guilty pleasure" but i still gotta say splatterhouse is one of THE best most underrated games this gen!
grabbed it a few days ago for 18 bucks and am having a blast again!
its just so sick twisted and sadistic!
its so unique, how often do we get such satanic games?
just puts a smile on your face!
even better its so gloriously old school!
feels like its been ripped directly out of the NES!

A guilty pleasure isn't always a taboo. Guilty pleasures are things you like that aren't necessarily liked by the norm. Since that usually is the case with most everything I like, I embrace the guilty pleasure.

My guilty pleasure are casual games like Bejeweled. Stuff everybody plays on either a console, tablet or phone. Of course, all straight men need to check out both Xtreme Volleyball games. It might be a terrible video game but seeing the ladies of DOA shaking their stuff in bikinis more than makes up for it. 3 thumbs up. I wish they would release a 3rd one.

seriously, as a long time video gamer, I don't really care what other people say about a game or how they view me as playing games, as long as I find the game awesome, I have no issues with demonstrating my passion and love for it, whatever the game type may be…
