Metal Gear Ground Zeroes Announced, MGS Movie Coming

Yes, a new Metal Gear is coming…but it might not be what you expect.

During the 25th anniversary celebration of the famed franchise, MGS creator Hideo Kojima officially unveiled Metal Gear Solid Ground Zeroes (or perhaps just Metal Gear Ground Zeroes ), which will boast the new Fox Engine and has targeted "current generation specifications." So will it be soon…?

Unfortunately, details are few and far between right now, but it's feasible that Ground Zeroes will be an open-world sandbox title, which would represent a significant departure for both Kojima and the Metal Gear franchise. We'll have to wait for extra info but the news didn't stop there. Also at the event, it was revealed that a feature film is in the works; they've got producer Avi Arad, the former Marvel CEO who helped bring you the Spider-Man and X-Men movies.

But as is the case with the game, no more details were revealed. So we have no idea who will play Snake, nor do we know when it'll be in theaters. That being said, given Hollywood's reputation for turning games into movies, we're far more interested in Ground Zeroes .

I cannot tell you how RELIEVED I am that it is not set after MGS4. That was always the fear for me and now that I know it is set before hand I can relax.

I am hoping this will take the conflict between Zero & Big Boss into the foreground. Also, I hope that it finally progresses the story from MGS3 – P.O. & P.W. both felt like massive diversions to me. Rather than progressing the over all plot they focuses on their own little side story's – I'd almost call them spin offs. I expect this title to seal the gap between MGS3 & MG1 once and for all.

As for the open world aspect, if it follows the similar gameplay structure of MGS already I wont mind it. However I don't want it to turn into GTA where you go to a certain point and activate missions. I hope there is always an objective hanging over the player so it stays focused.

Apparently the gameplay demonstration was 20 minutes, now I really, REALLY want to see this. rumours state it'll be shown at PAX tomorrow… we'll have to wait and see.

…I am…tooooo excited. To be honest I couldn't care which console it comes out for…PS3 or XBOX 360 – I really couldn't care…because in the end I know the PS3 version would just be the absolute best.

With a title like : Ground Zero…you're totally right. It has to be about Big Boss creating OH! And with a sand-box style – that's just the absolute perfect way to do so.

What really interests me…is the suit which Big Boss is wearing. …If this is after Peace Walker…he got the suit back from Portable Ops…which is…just..well interesting I guess.

Wish to see gameplay tomorrow!

Somebody has to reign in this weirdo naming trend that has begun, what's a Ground Zeroes?

It will be interesting to see if they drop the "Solid" because it will be on 360.

Maybe we won't see another Solid title until PS4.

From what I understand the full title was Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zero or Zeroes. But you play as Big Boss so I don't really know if the Solid aspect was an accident.

This was what I got from twitter.

I guess a Ground Zeroes is …. there isn't just one Ground Zero there are many….? Who cares though we all know Hideo likes to make fun words for his games.

If i were to guess, i'd say "Ground Zeroes' is just a code name. When KP unveiled MGS 3D it was code named "The Naked Sample".

By next year i expect it will be MGS5.

Ugh, I hate that these games aren't exclusive anymore. Hopefully since its now multiplat well see a Wii U version. I imagine a lot can be done with a second screen after having played Snake Eater 3DS.

That said, naysayers of future MGS games be damned. After playing through, and watching the cutscenes unfold in MGS4 again, there is plenty that can be done to expand on this universe. Sunny being saved by Raiden, Eva and Ocelet retrieving Big Boss' body, an adult Sunny etc. No need for these games to end anytime soon. Kojima truly built an amazing franchise that he can expand upon for at least two more generations.

It's funny how when you're a real game hobbyist the platform can make all the difference. I just couldn't play Shenmue 2 on Xbox so I had to acquire a modded Dreamcast copy. Doesn't seem right anywhere else.

Indeed. Xbox to me is the ultimate icon of generic gaming.

I only had an Xbox to play that game. I loved the crap out of it. The ending however, has haunted my dreams ever since.

Wow… I expected a more enthusiastic article than this, I must admit. 😀

This game is called Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes everywhere else, and reportedly looks *amazing*, no less. It features old Snake, and is still based on stealth, avoiding searchlights and all that – but all in a more open world game environment.

Personally, from what I read elsewhere I think it all sounds *fantastic*.

Where did you read that it features Old Snake? In the pic you can see the band for the eye patch under the NVG..seems like Big Boss

Old Snake? Don't you mean Naked Snake/Big Boss? That promotional image is of Big Boss. Not Solid Snake. Solid Snake/Old Snake is from MGS4 and is the same Snake from Metal Gear 1, 2. MGS1 and 2.

It was from some tweets during the event. But I now read others say it was Big Boss, so it was probably a mistake.
… But is "Naked Snake" and "Old Snake" two different persons? I would not know, sorry. 🙂

Anyway, here's the tweets:

"Snake crawled @ avoiding searchlights, killed guard, rode jeep, called in heli for evac. Sounds like MG, but the scale & atmosphere… Wow."

"Ground Zeroes on Fox Engine – rich detail, open world, and Old Snake is back!"

Naked Snake is Big Boss. His code name during Snake Eater was Naked Snake. After killing the Boss he was renamed Big Boss. Big Boss was the main antagonist from the Metal Gear games on NES. He is also the protagonist in Peace Walker and looks to be the protagonist in this new game.

Old Snake is Solid Snake, a clone of Naked Snake/Big Boss and is the protagonist from Metal Gear 1 and 2 sent to defeat Big Boss. He's also the protagonist in MGS1, 2 and 4. He was renamed Old Snake in MGS4 due to his rapid aging caused by the way his body was engineered when he was cloned. Who ever called Big Boss Old Snake got it wrong.

Anywho, it'd be nice to take a gander at that trailer.

That's a pretty funny goof Kojima stole from Ecsape from New York. Kurt Russell's character was Snake Plisken. That's where Kojima got the Snake from. In MGS2 Solid Snake was trying to hide from the Pariots so when he met up with Raiden for the first time he told him his name was Iroquois Plisken. Pretty funny.

haha, yeah I remember him saying he ganked some of that character. I loved Escape from New York, it's kinda too bad they let Russel get too old to do a third movie.

Though with Arnold and Sylvester doing movies at 65 and 66 maybe it's not impossible.

Beam-

Alot more than you can imagine! 😉

I just got caught up on MGS series before MGS4 was released. It was overwhelming to say the least. It still is actually. That makes the games oh so sweet!

The kind of news I like to start my day. I wonder where in the MGS story they're going to place this one. Looks like it's likely after PW..I just hope the movie doesn't screw over the story many have spent time to dig into..

Maybe this one with its open worldy approach can get me into the series. I've followed it for a long time but never got into any of the games very far. Just one of those things you'd like to like.

I don't get. I can understand not liking MGS2 but the rest of the games in the franchise are stellar.

I don't dispute the quality, it just never grabbed me. Like recently I just sold off Arkham Asylum without finishing it, it's obviously a top quality game I just felt no fire in my thumbs to keep going. Same with MGS.

Beamboom

Wow – that's crazy. It's the *exact* same with me, with both games (and you can add Arkham City to that list too)! I don't deny their qualities, but there was no "fire in my thumbs" either.

And especially with Arkham City that puzzles me to no end, cause by definition I should *love* it.

I'm not expecting the movie to be good, but I'll still watch it, of course. If it's as least as good as Silent Hill, I'll call it a relative success. The game sounds really interesting, though. I really want to hear more about it. The whole "Game without a Game Over" idea is intriguing, and if anyone can pull it off, it's Kojima Pro.

Just checked in.
This is all coming very fast. Maybe it's a good thing there aren't anymore details. It would be too overwhelming at the current moment. Looks like the Metal Gear title lives on via Kojima.
A movie could be monumental, but there is a solid 95% chance one of the greatest entities in video game history could get donkey jacked via Hollywood.

One can only wonder where the story will take place this time around.

Am I the only one who noticed this about the picture. If this is Big Boss why is the eye patch positioned the wrong way? Look at the strap just above the NVG, clearly it's a left eye patch. Bib Boss is blind on the right eye.

Did you guys notice the MSF symbol? So this means the game takes off straight after Peacewalker. The missing bandana adds to that as well.

I'm really intrigued.

wow, a open world MGS game!?
well paint me yellow and call me charlie!
totally did not see that coming!
definetly a next gen title though, it was running on a high end PC so i seriously doubt will be seeing this for current systems especially announcing it this late.
unless its going to be out soon, but then if it was why wait so long?

I,d love an HD remake of the first 2 MG game on the MSX that happened right before MGS in the timeline. This way wed get the whole story:

MGS3 -> MG -> MG2 -> MGS -> MGS2 -> MGS4

This way we can get the 6 games in a collection package or something and be able to play the whole saga in order.
