Sony's press conference at this year's Tokyo Game Show is taking place right now, and as usual, they've started with some statistics.
Most notably are the two updated worldwide sales numbers for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable.
According to the current count, the PS3 has hit 51.8 million and the PSP has surpassed 71.4 million, which is pretty impressive considering that some people consider Sony's handheld to have "failed." And with global PS3 sales topping 50 million and a cheaper machine on the market (not to mention upcoming exclusives), the numbers should continue to rise. Of course, the possibility of topping the PS2 seems like an impossibility but who knows? Maybe in due time, the PS3 will close in on the insane worldwide stats of its predecessor; it'll take a few more price cuts and several more years, though.
Stay tuned as we catch everything important from Sony's keynote address. Here's hoping for a US release date for the PlayStation Vita!
The recent PS3 price cut has helped to "spike" sales somewhat for the machine. I believe strongly that with the excellent line up of Fall releases we should see another sales surge leading up to Christmas.
Considering what Sony has had to put up with this year, including a lot of "hacker" scorne and some rather nasty punches to its worldwide brand, it has done rather well considering. In this economy, together with the massive PSN outage, it could have been so much worse…
But why has it not been so bad then? Simple! We are all here for one thing, a common love for the PlayStation and what it represents.
And what does it represent? It represents an unparalleled collection of exclusive games that no other company but Sony can allude to, and no other console has. Others have tried, but Sony's worldwide properties and collection of game studios is currently unrivaled. Yes, some of us have been frustrated at Sony, we wanted more in the beginning and we still want more now; and yet the PS3, and more importantly the games, are delivering… like a fine wine.
We are getting drunk on fine gaming, and we don't even know it.
That is the brilliance of Sony and its PlayStation platform… may it live long and prosper 🙂

When's the last time we didn't update during a major press conference? 😉
So true… I am live on the site now, waiting for updates 🙂 Waiting to board a plane to the Kingdom of Brunei for work 🙂 All in a days work hey… and it really is a Kingdom… with a King and his cohorts…
I wonder if the Sultan of Brunei has a PS3? I know he has his own A330 with a gold loo in it…

These numbers are actually the same ones released at the end of the quarter in June 2011. There are still around 3 months of data not included.

Excellent point.
PSP over 70 million units, doesn't sound like a failure to me…
Main issue I think is the fact that a good many of them were hacked… even the latest Psp released is now hacked which is shame for the developers. In Asia, where ever I travel, even on this trip to Brunei, every "shop" are offering new Psp that are then hacked for you at the shop after purchase.
You can also purchase hacked Psp1000's and Psp2000's. In fact you can get what you want… I was absolutely amazed at what the shops here are doing and there is no way to stop it.
This is happening in Thailand, Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia (huge hacking scene there), Brunei, Indonesia… everywhere it is easy to get hold of hacked Psp's and any game you want…
It is just the way it is… and that is why developers are not making the money they should be making when developing for the Psp… so maybe in the light… it has been a failure.
But you can thank the hackers for that!

That's why I am so vehemently opposed to hacking consoles.
Hey Highlander,
Did you just add more 2 babes to your sig pic?
I just noticed hotties #4 & #6, whomever they may be.
(guess you can tell I've never been able to get into RGP's although I do own tons of them including fan favorites, FFVII & FF Tactics, LOL)
They are, from left to right;
Mizuho Kazami – Please Teacher
Shion Uzuki – Xenosaga (from a cutscene)
Eris(Elis) – Asobi ni Ikuyo: Bombshells from the Sky
Sophitia – Soul Calibur 4 version
Rorona – Atelier Rorona
Rinoa Heartilly – Final Fantasy VIII
Aeris – Final Fantasy VII
KOS-MOS – Xenosaga
Thanks Highlander,
I faintly recognized a few faces(SC4, FF7, & XenoG) & but didn't know their names and couldn't remember which games I had seen them in.
PSP sales are low and don't seem as popular.
PSP is on track to sell another 8 million on its 7th year and you say its not popular?
