Soul Calibur Will Rise Again

It's one of those legendary fighting franchises that just won't go away. And as far as the fans are concerned, it shouldn't go away.

According to Ripten , Namco producer Katsuhiro Harada and the new SC franchise director Daishi Odashima have confirmed that a new Soul Calibur is indeed in the works. The image you see here came along with a Tweet from Odashima saying simply, "SC is back!" Harada followed a day later with the same update so we just have to assume it's true; besides, there's a link to a picture of Odashima hard at work…in his casual flowery shirt. They haven't provided us with any further details at this time, but don't forget that besides a PSP installment, the last entry came in 2008. Therefore, we're sort of assuming we're in line for Soul Calibur V , which could very well be a super huge title for 2011. SCIV was certainly a lot of fun and even though it isn't exactly authentic or as crazy challenging as something like Street Fighter IV , SC is still a blast. What began on the Dreamcast back in 1999 has become quite the battling phenomenon, so it makes perfect sense to release another title.

What with all these character crossovers, though, we'd love to see some inspired roster selections. How's about Nathan Drake? Come on, they can do heroes with guns… Or maybe Dante…or Ezio…or…Sackboy.

I recently got Broken Destiny and it is really amazing what they accomplished on the PSP. The biggest fun for me in SCIV was fighting with characters that I used in the soul creator, which tended to come from the various Final Fantasies more than anywhere else.

SCV is a lock, but fighting games lose their luster quick so I'll probably wait on a lower price point. Don't think I will be able to do that with Mortal Kombat though.

Was the character creation actually good in SCIV? it was awful in III.

It's fantastic in IV, I've recreated everything from Tifa to Spiderman. Google it and look at some people's creations.

Ben, methinks you are forgetting that Soul Edge (aka Soul Blade)which preceded Soul Calibur began on the PlayStation in 1996.

Tsk, Tsk… <j/k>

Soul Calibur V is a must have D1P – assuming that they put some effort into the story mode this time.

As for Crossovers, I'm content with Sophitia fighting KOS-MOS…

That is what has always been missing from fighters to me. An Epic story, something to go with all the skill and techniques involved with fighting games.

Sophitia agrees, and KOSMOS allowed her to take the spotlight as avatar for a while.

I wonder if I could fashion a character similar enough to KOS MOS in the soul creator, hmmm.

I don't count Soul Edge. The series may have began with Soul Edge but the PHENOMENON began with Soul Calibur.

LOL! Well, I first played Soul Blade in 97/98 and loved it. to me personally, Soul Calibur is the continuation since so many of the fighters are the same. I hated Cervantes even back then, and Sophitia….well, she just had a certain something…still does. 😉

I'm sorry but you cannot just dismiss Soulblade (Souledge) like that, it's a phenomial entry for the series, the only fighting game on the PSone that could even contend with the almighty Tekken.
If anything, Soul Calibur II over shadows SC1 as the best of the series, leaving it quite forgettable.

The thrid had no advancements over II and i never got IV, though i wouldnt mind now that it's under 10 pounds and i need a new game.

lol. Yeah I'm not sure how you can't count Soul Edge. It's like saying Final Fantasy didn't exist before VII because that's when it became a phenomenon. Oh well…

I didn't say Soul Edge wasn't a good game. I'm saying no one has heard of it. I'm saying nobody would care or remember the game if it wasn't for Soul Calibur. I would and a few hardcore gamers would but without SC as a groundbreaking launch title on the Dreamcast, there would be no series today.

I do agree with Ben on this, I was poking him for a little fun because I played Soul Blade and remember it, but I also understand exactly what he's saying. Soul Blade (Soul Edge) was a primitive game compared to Soul Calibur. graphically speaking the DreamCast game was light years ahead, and although a few hardcore PlayStation enthusiasts like us may remember it, most gamers only know about SoulBlade (aka Soul Edge) if we mention it, or they stumble over it in the Soul Calibur Wiki. It's just not part of the modern day Soul Calibur awareness.

Ummm, who cares for a storyline in a darn fighting game? I can understand in a visual novel, but everyone have their own preferences and I can respect that.

TheHighlander

Mr Anon.

Since SC 4 already creates the basis for the game, the controls, physics and online components. For SC 5 those things are all pretty much an enhancement of what already was done in SC4. This leaves time and resource to flesh out the rest of the game, which basically means the solo campaign mode which was about as basic as it could be in SC4, and the Create A Soul feature. Sure they can refine the characters and other graphics, but beyond repeating the existing moves, characters and weapons, the new elements in SC5 are limited to new guest characters and a campaign mode. So, while you may not care for a story mode, it's about all there is left to do. Personally, I'd love a good story mode to add on top of the already excellent arcade fighting game.

Unfortunately, since fighting games are almost always built from the arcade cabinet versions, I doubt we'll ever see one with a credible story mode.

What I want from SC is a full-on adventure game / RPG-lite dealing with the quest for the blades, with fighting game combat against randomly-generated enemies (with the other main characters as bosses). Just like I want Tekken to feature a realistic Iron Fist Tournament.

Make the Arcade and Versus modes the extras (I'm not saying they should skimp on those modes).

I was just discussing this with someone when word first hit about this. Kratos' appearance in Mortal Kombat must have triggered it. I wonder If he would also grace this title as well. Blades of Chaos crossing with the Soul Blade in Hi Def would be sick.

No if it's one game series they should absolutely NOT let Hollywood get they're greedy little hands on is my precious GOW series, you know that that film will only serve to disappoint they almost never get those kinds of films right cause they don't take video games storyline seriously enough it wouldn't even be GOW. They would just take it and turn it into something else with GOW in the title.

Yoshimitsu was by far the coolest in Tekken 3 with his 'punch' costume, the one with the Alien face, green sword, and metalic chest plate.

I always found him silly in SC. Though i wont object to Heihachi in SCII lol, that made me slaughter the game.

i dont know if i'll buy this, fighting games are starting to loose its appeal to me. when i play fighting games, i prefer to have local instead of online. also, theres not much to fighting games other than fight after fight while story telling takes the back seat…….well, another car is more like it. and after the crap fest that was soul caliber 4 online with their reflex based moves, no thank you.

The only thing i'm thinking now is who's the character that they're keeping "exclusive". That empty spot in the character selection screen just pissed me off everytime i saw it. I did enjoy playing as star killer though.

I love how Namco have single-handedly destroyed this franchise throughout the years. Still though its quite a shame how Namco have continually snubbed us arcade players by doing console-only releases.

"dont know if i'll buy this, fighting games are starting to loose its appeal to me. when i play fighting games, i prefer to have local instead of online. also, theres not much to fighting games other than fight after fight while story telling takes the back seat"

Thank for you realizing why all fighting games should be arcade-only released…console centric gamers just don't have attension span these types of games demand. At least seem to realize this by now keeping their VF game arcade-only.

"What began on the Dreamcast back in 1999 has become quite the battling phenomenon, so it makes perfect sense to release another title."

This is incorrect, but If you really understood the franchise, you would've known that SC is nothing but sequel to Soul Edge. To further add, Soul Calibur never begun on the Dreamcast, but started life on a P1-based system board(System 12):

http://www.system16.com/hardware.php?id=535

Secondly, Namco had to change title from "Soul Edge" to Soul Calibur for legal reasons e.g. Tim Langdell

Methinks you failed to read my reply above. No need to get all bent out of shape to prove your hardcore gamer status.

Ben indicated that he mentioned Soul Calibur on the DreamCast because in his opinion that's when the phenomenon began. Soul Calibur that it. You have to admit that he does had a bit of a point considering how primitive the graphics of Soul Blade/Edge are compared to the Dreamcast version. Rest assured though, no one is forgetting Soul Edge/Blade.

"I love how Namco have single-handedly destroyed this franchise throughout the years. Still though its quite a shame how Namco have continually snubbed us arcade players by doing console-only releases."

They haven't destroyed anything. SC is still a solid fighting game franchise, even though it's grown much more simplistic and easy to get into over the years. Reading these sorts of complaints about fighting games are an eyesore and almost always seem to come from folks that don't really know what they're talking about.

Namco doesn't snub the arcade market or arcade players. Soul Calibur III, at least, got an arcade edition released in Japan. There's no real market for arcades, or arcade fighting games, outside of Japan. Look at Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition. It's going nowhere really unless it becomes availale as DLC for the consoles. Namco does plenty of arcade releases.

"Thank for you realizing why all fighting games should be arcade-only released…console centric gamers just don't have attension span these types of games demand. At least seem to realize this by now keeping their VF game arcade-only"

I'm a console centric gamer with a near god-like attention span, sunshine. Don't make blanket statements you can't back up. Sega didn't make Virtua Fighter an arcade only game, they don't see a market for Virtua Fighter that's large enough to warrant bringing the game to the consoles. Virtua Fighter's last console effort was less than successful.

If all fighting games got arcade releases only, the genre or whatever you wish to call it, would be dead as dead can be.

never been a real SC fan, never really been a fighting game fan in fact the only fighting game i really enjoy is MK.
SC is to similar to all the other fighting games, its like the shooter genre you played one game you played them all!
maybe if they changed it up a bit, made it drastically different to the other games in the series than maybe then they would suck in a few more people.

Funny, I'm thinking of buying SCIV next month lol.

******* namco sucks these days, almost feel like not even supporting their games at all >:|

Anyway, great to see that they're coming back, Soul Calibur's the only true weapons fighter out there and therefor is a must get for me at some point.

I would love for someone to come up with some competition for SC though. A new weapons fighter who could defy and stand up to SC.

Dynasty Warriors actually was a fighter at first before going all out in a world map on ps2.

And to be honest Dynasty Warriors was better than SC imo. The characters were more fluid, the animations flowed better and the weapons were really different. Chinese lore for the win!

If you liked dynasty warriors, you would love Orochi Warriors Z and depending if you like robot games or your a fan of gundam. Dynasty Gundam 3 came out this month. But be warned if your a gundam fan, they still don't have all the gundams in there. Especially the popular ones in gundam wing and g gundam. The only have a few of them.

This series though does deal with more range attacks even though the main focus is still melee and orochi warriors is a crossover of 2 franchises with some of its own unique characters.

Thanks man, checked it out on youtbue. Looks really good and the fighting mode looks pretty authentic as well!

Sadly it seems it won't get a proper US/EU release…

I think the Dynasty Warriors game haven't been selling that well at all in the West so maybe that's why they're not bothering with releasing them here now.

I'll see if I import it, this game is so contextual though. Not being able to understand much of it will really make things hard in terms of advancing. I'll see.

Pffft. 3D fighters. I've played Tekken back on the PS2 (and PS1, Tekken 3), and I bought Tekken 6 (played it for a week and now it's sitting there collecting dust),and I've played SC2 and 3. Now that my eyes have been opened to the world of 2D fighters, I don't think I want to play 3D fighters anymore. I think a month ago I played with Frostface some U2, and we decided to play Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection Online. I downloaded the game (bought it a looong time ago), played a little and deleted it straight away. Can't stand playing it anymore.

To those who can, good for you, hope you find supportive fighting communities for your 3D game of choice, but count me out. For good.

LOL! Soul Calibur may not be 2D, but with Sophitia, Taki, Seong Mina, Xianghua, Ivy and Cassandra bouncing around the arena, why would you want it to be 2D?

SC is to me the best fighter. I don't like hand to hand fighters whether boxing or martial arts based. Mortal Kombat never captured my attention. But the colorful, fast paced action ion Soul Calibur with no blood flying and lots of special effects just always captured my imagination. I know that most people laugh at my disliking for blood in games, but I really do find that games are more game like and fun – to me – when the amount of blood and gore is kept low or non existent.

Soul Calibur provides high speed, high octane action, huge special effects and special attacks, lots of techniques to learn and master, attractive graphics and fun characters all without blood. It's perfect.

WolfCrimson
WolfCrimson

LOL Highlander, you really like all that "bouncing around", huh? Btw, I meant 3D movement, not 3D graphics, I didn't clarify in my earlier post.

Maybe you find Soul Calibur fast, but I find it slow. Well, slower than what I'm used to, anyway. And it's not demanding execution-wise at all, i.e., you don't need finger dexterity (mad fingah skillz) to pull off combos or moves. Although SC does require proper timing at times (forward+guard or back+guard to deflect, for example, don't remember what it's called), I'll give it that. Seriously, I KNOW FOR A FACT that if you try out 2D fighters that are fast-paced (Street Fighter doesn't count, KOF does though), you'll forget all about 3D.

You have your preferences in fighters, I acknowledge that (Official WolfCrimson Acknowledgment Seal lol). But with the criteria you just listed I'm surprised you didn't say Guilty Gear (incredibly fast, and very very hard to master, latest iteration is Guilty Gear XX Accent Core + on PS2 and PSP) or Blazblue (slower, easier than Guilty, but still hard to master, lastest iteration is BB: Continuum Shift on PS3). They're both 2D fighters though, air-dashers, but they're not hand-to-hand-martial-arts-based like Street Fighter. They both have cool special effects, the characters are VERY unique and interesting (character-wise & aesthetically), and the stories for both are really good. They have an actual plot that's not a joke/cliche premise for a fighting game (not that SC is like that, either). And not a single drop of blood. Oh, and the soundtracks for both games are amazing. And did I say not a single drop of blood? 😛

Guilty Gear is persistently on my "buy it when nothing else is on the list, list." It's one of those almost buys that I will get one day.

SC4 can be very fast, the finger gymnastics required to use some of the special attacks can be quite demanding, as can hitting the right sequence to pull off various attacks. It's not so much the bounce, as it is the overall aesthetic.

WolfCrimson

Ok, but beware, you're gonna get friction burns (if you haven't already from SC). I did when I first played Blazblue, and GG is much more demanding.

You should give dbz tenk 3 a try. Those 2d games look slow in comparison to that game.

I just couldn't get into guilty gear. It just wasn't what I expected it was going to be.

The only 2d games I'm a fan of now in days is the snk vs capcom stuff. They need snk vs capcom 3 or I will have a temper tantrum slash BF!
