BioWare: Mass Effect 3 “Best Game We’ve Ever Made”

Every time I hear someone call an impending RPG "one of the best games ever," all I can think of is Peter Molyneux and Fable .

But at least in this case, BioWare might actually have a reason to say Mass Effect 3 could end up being one of the greatest titles in history. Marketing boss David Silverman is doing his job well by promoting the potential quality of BioWare's third ME installment. After reminding everyone that ME2 won 150 Game of the Year Awards, he said the team has done a lot of research about what people like best. And the result would be as follows:

"We’re making Mass Effect 3 to be the best game we’ve ever made. That would make it one of the best games ever, and we’re hoping to see sales that reflect that."

And of course, the point of the interview at CVG is to prove that ME3 can indeed sell huge without "selling out." We believe it, but the hardcore role-playing fans will be the judge of that when the game arrives. Remember, BioWare, that same group had some criticism of your last RPG that, while still great, seemed headed in an unsavory direction. Yes, we're talking about Dragon Age II .

Mass Effect 2 is one my favorite games so far this gen. I wanted to buy a 360 to play part 1 and 2. But I found out about the added content for the ps3 version and decided to save some money. I think ME3 looks great. The added stealth kills and the inclusion of the new melee blade (or whatever it's called) excite me. I definitely prefer ME2 over Dragon Age 2. I had to force myself to complete DA2.

I had to force myself to finish it too, thankfully I really enjoyed the character interplay and the Hawke I made. But sadly those character stories never tied up.

I *hate* press releases like these. All it does is raise expectations too high and spoil it for the final product!

So mr Silverman, either STFU or show us something that makes *us* conclude that this is the best game ever made.

Agreed Beamboom.

I don't mind a company telling me about all the features their games has, and how proud of it they are, but I do not see the need to chest beat.

Let your product speak for you!

Exactly.
If I were one of the devs or creative directors of ME3 I'd be rather pissed right about now. This is just *noise* and motivates all the haters to just look even harder for flaws.

Haha right. What did you expect them to say :

"Ehhh, we're not trying as hard to make it as good as the first "?

cLoud,
I don't expect much from marketing guys at all, but I'd suggest they tell us something concrete, what awsomeness they are adding and let *us* reply with "oh man this is the coolest EVER!".

Basically, what he's stating here is really nothing at all! Why even go out with such a statement? What's to gain from that?

Either these marketing guys should give us something *real*, like screen-shots or game details to gain attention, or they should simply shut up until they got that.

I have to fully and totally agree with Beam here. Excessive hype like this does nothing but set expectation unreasonably high and give too much ammo to critics of a series. If you say "best game ever" and then have even slight flaws like a dropped frame rate here and there or a few instances of screen tearing you get critics calling your game a steaming pile and gamers crying foul.

They should, as suggested, stick to concrete verifiable fact and give us screens and videos of actual game play of these things they feel make it the best game ever and let us, the gamers, decide for ourselves.

Sometimes, I think marketing departments write bigger cheques than the rest of the company can manage.

I agree, Beamboom, noise indeed. Although, to be fair, he did say "best game *we've* ever made"…if I were him, I'd wouldn't be asking anyone from the teams making BioWare's other games to make me a coffee any time soon 😉

@Shiva: … and he then goes on by saying, "That would make it one of the best games ever, and we’re hoping to see sales that reflect that."

I even hate that last part of the quote above, about sales. I don't want any marketing guy drooling over my money!

Yeah I'd love to serve that guy my special blend coffee… With "YOU'RE FIRED" written all over the cup. 😀

Woo Hoo. I like the ME games a bunch.. I wonder how many user review moles Bioware will plant in cyberspace with this release.

As much as I love this series, I have higher hopes for Bioware's other game, The Old Republic, later this year. Bioware has already stated that it is currently the size of 10 Knights of the Old Republic games put together. And every single character in that game is voiced. Which is just insane for a game that size.

150? I guess every Tom Dick and Harry's review score counts when it comes to Bioware.

Maybe by the time the PS4 comes out they will be able to finagle a deal with MS to allow them to put it into a Mass Effect collection.

Ultima, do yourself a favour, don't wait for MS to play nice with Sony. I actually bought a secondhand 360 principally to play ME1 (as well as other exclusives, but ME1 was the tipping point) because I loved ME2 that much.

The difference here is they are saying this is the best game they have ever made, not the best RPG of all time like The Liar said about Fable (Though I did like Fable 1 quite a bit anyway).

I'll just reiterate I'm not worried about ME3 at all, so far as I can tell it's the people who haven't played through ME2 that have any worry about at all about it. It may not have the depth of WKC but its certainly more of an RPG than FFXIII and has a lot more non-action traits like character development, exploration, and customization.

Hearing you say "it's more of an RPG than FFXIII" should be enough to convince RPG fans to give it a shot.

When you mention Fable are you talking about the franchise in general? I played only the first Fable on PC and I wasn't that impressed. It was good, but overhyped IMO. Same thing I think about Halo 1 and Gears of War 1 (both overhyped). That's why I didn't care for any exclusive Xbox game. That was until I played Mass Effect 2 (thank God that exclusivity is gone).

Underdog15

I thought Fable was good, but held back intensely by how incredibly short it was. I know you can keep playing once it ends, but there's nothing to do after that.

WorldEndsWithMe

He's talking about how in the lead-up to the release of the original Fable, boss Peter Molyneux made absolutely incredible claims about what the game would be capable of, how the world would unfold, and all the stuff RPG fans love.

It all turned out to be untrue. Not in opinion, but in fact.

Platinum-ed ME2 yesterday ( first ever plat, hurrah!) and will do the same with ME3…probably the only two trophies of that type I'll ever bother to get, but these games are worth the time and effort.
I played DA:O to death and liked it a lot, but was so not into DA2…they tinkered too much with an unbroken (mostly) game and I think learned something from the reaction it got.
From all accounts, as opposed to hype, ME3 will be epic and the gameplay that I've seen so far looks freakin' awesome. Definite pre-order for me.

as much as i like playing mass effect 2, its given me so much problems/headaches to the point that i'll be buying mass effect 3 for 10 bucks and play it on my ps4. when i played mass effect 2 without patches, all i encountered was infinite loading screens. when i tried with the patch, i got infinite loading screens AND the game freezing loading screen that corrupts gamesaves. I've only been playing 21 hours and now i cant get past the loyalty missions for grunt and after the fight agains vasir in the lair of the shadow broker. right at the next loading screen it goes infinite loading. if it wasnt the only game that i had a problem with, i wont be so pissed. however, its just only mass effect 2 that i'm having a problem with both the disc and the game trial version. So right now i have no faith in bioware's technical capabilities.

The load time, even in the Normandy "decks" is my biggest gripe with the game. I've had my share of freezes and a couple of massive slow-down events, but nothing like what you've experienced. That sucks.

FxTales

Same here, the loading times are cringe worthy. Also the out of sync sound in some areas. Otherwise it's a beast of a game. I love it.

Hope it can live up to that statement. I want that to be true, I await next year with great anticipation.

Might try deleting the game off your hard drive completely. Then reinstall the game and download and install all the updates, and see if that works. You might also try putting your game save on a USB or something before deleting the game and see if you can get your save to work after reinstalling it. o.O

i've tried a lot of different combinations of deleting and reinstalling and still the same problem. contacted ea technical support and they were useless. every other game i have works great and its only mass effect 2. i even restored the ps3s file system and still nothing.

what i notice with that infinite loading screen is that when it does work, the hdd light goes on but when it does the infinite screen it doesnt go on at all. the loading green disc icon stops for a bit and keeps going but it never moves on to the next screen. it cant be my hard drive because i been installing and reinstalling demos, videos, music, and game data on it and they're all fine. this happens either when i use the disc or the game trial download from psn. the messed up thing is without the patch, the game doesnt freeze and corrupt data. when i play with the new patch, it freezes like hell with corrupt data. i'm just wondering why its only mass effect 2 and everything else has no problem at all.

right now i'm stuck after the vasir fight or right after the tresher maw in grunts loyalty mission because it wont move forward from there. i want to keep playing but the game wont let me. i actually like playing it. my theory is that they tweaked the mass effect engine that the older ps3 model cant play it.

What about making it so you don't sign in to EA's servers or whatever each time you start the game? Maybe that has an adverse effect.

Otherwise, wow! O.O I haven't had anything close to the problems you've experienced. Might be an indication that your PS3 is starting to die?

johnld
johnld

@clair
yeah, i made sure it doesnt connect to ea servers since i read that was a problem.

i thought about the idea that my ps3 is about to die but as i said, every other game i have played great. i even played infamous 2, a newer game, no problem. besides, if its a ps3 failure i would assume it would affect all games that i have instead of just mass effect not playing. i do get it to play sometimes after i play a different game, like a boot up disc but it usually gets passed the initial loading screen but freezes on the next ones. never had problem with elevator loading screens though. i'm getting stuck where theres a battle that goes straight to a loading screen afterwards. if i can save before the loading screen, i can just continue the next time i play. i know when its loading properly it lights up the hdd access light but when it goes infinite loading, the light doesnt even light up. i'm playing socom 4 right now and theres no problem at all, minus all the damn grenades everywhere. you shouldnt be able to refill grenades this easily in this kind of game.

it seems like someone else is having the same issue but on a different bioware game. i guess since its not that widespread they dont care to do anything about it.

Have you tried starting a new game? It's got to be your saved data. I forget but can you turn auto save off? I can't think of anything else. Maybe buy a used copy from Gamestop, keep the new disc and return the old one that's giving you trouble and try that? Hee hee

johnld
johnld

turned off autosave also, returned and exchange the disc 3 times already so dont know what else to do. i'm thinking of just giving up on the game and then pick it up again when the ps4 arrives. its just too much of a headache for just one game. after getting 21 hours in the game, i dont really want to start over. with white knight, batman, battlefield 3, and uncharted 3 coming up, i dont really care if i dont play mass effect for a long time.

It's definitely your data then. You don't want to start it over?

johnld
johnld

nah, i did alot in the game already. besides, it did that infinite loading again when i didnt have my save data on my ps3. i just recently deleted everything, installed the game data offline, installed the cerberus pack offline, then copied my profile data from my memory stick to my ps3.

i gotta wait till 1130pm to copy my game progress from cloud because of that stupid time limit crap. it said you can download your save data to a friends ps3 by using the cloud but it doesnt tell you that you need to wait 24 hours before you can copy the data. so if you unlocked some thing in a game and put it on the cloud, you gotta wait a day to copy it so its useless if you're planning to go to a friend's house in an hour or something.

John,

I had the same sort of problems with Heavy Rain (and, so far, only HR). I couldn't get one ending, much less all of them.

Totally frustrating, especially with the locked saves and the 24 hour wait for accessing Cloud Saves.

I'm thinking I'll try to finish it on my Dad's PS3. If that doesn't work, I guess I'm effed.

In order for ME3 to be their best games and one of the best games of all time ME3 will need to have they same quantity of dialogue options and depth as Dragon Age Origins. They would have to get rid of the good/bad/neutral for every dialogue choice and action too and have some gray area like DA Origins. Most of the time in DA Origins I didn't know if I was a bad guy or a good guy or if the actions I was choosing were considered good or bad, it made the game a lot deeper and enjoyable.

They are both different. Neverwinter Nights feels more like Dragon Age or Oblivion. Mass Effect on the other hand is more like Knights of the Old Republic but in a different scifi galactic universe. Is like comparing Far Cry with Killzone.
