When Hideo Kojima is sad, gamers are sad.
We have no idea why the master has called the previous year "meaningless," but it's definitely worthy of discussion. According to a few recent Twitter updates from Kojima (as translated by VG247 ), something bad must've happened to one of his new projects. In two separate Tweets, he writes:
"I can’t take it anymore; this is unbearable, I can’t stay positive."
"The thing that I spent one year delicately preparing became meaningless."
So has a fresh Kojima Productions project been canned? And if so, what was it? It can't be Zone of the Enders 3 because that title hasn't even started development, and it really can't be his new NGP title, because he's all set to display it at E3 next month. But above all else, we hate to see one of the industry's brightest minds floundering and finding it tough to "stay positive." 🙁
A very sad time indeed.
Hope he finds a way.
I wonder if he'll tell us what happened…
Damn, I've never heard of Kojima canceling a game, first time for everything I guess.
He who doesn't fall, doesn't rise.
Seeing Kojima down like this is like seeing a unicorn cry… It just shouldn't happen!
*ROFL*! Oh man, what a quoteâ¦
Ben, I want a signature option on this site 😀 Gotta start "Quote of the week". 😀

Give that man a cookie.
Doesn't fix anything, but I know a cookie cheers me up. 🙂
Time for Sony to poach Kojima?
Blasphemy!!! The great Kojima can never be meaningless!
Don't worry Kojima doesn't make bad games.
Wow, now this gives me the chills…this is like, end of hope is like seeing Konami is going Square's way.

I think he wanted to be at e3 but can't so he has to a new game somewhere else. Isn't suppose to show 2 new games?
Hideo Kojima giving up on games is like God giving up on the world.
It may simply be the economic realities of our time.
The markets may have rallied close to a hundred percent from their death defying lows (some 2 years or so ago), but that is due to enormous amounts of money printing creating liquidity to try and fill up the trillion dollar holes left after the near collapse of the financial system; it therefore does not mean people have more money in their pockets… it just means bankers had more liquidity to "speculate" with to try and make more money out of "given money" – from the tax payers – to try and fill their gigantic black holes – after a spectacular night at the casino…
In the real world there is only so much money that people can dispose of on gaming and their hobbies. Maybe Kojima's project was too ambitious, or would cost to much for the publisher to risk making it, or at least start making it and then having to can it half way through. Maybe this is better; allow Kojima to re-think and see if the I.P. he was working on could be re-optimised, re-designed to fall within acceptable budget limitations and time.

Your opening sentence is all that needed to be said.
A lot of people are experiencing "normalcy bias" right now, and they are ignoring the planetary wide economic crisis.
There are bigger things at work here, and the video game industry has been able to steer clear of the pitfalls for the most part. I believe what is coming down the road by the end of 2011 and all of 2012 will change a lot of things in this industry.

According to one of the tweets I saw, I believe it was his secret "Devil" game, that was somehow related to MGS.
I'd like to know the whole story behind this sudden game downturn because this was the game he said he always wanted to do, but I'm thinking it wasn't turned down by his own production company, so that would only leave Sony, and I just can't see them ever thumbing anything of his down.
And the plot thickens…….
I don't think we should overreact here, it doesn't say anything is cancelled.
It must be especially tough for him considering how much of a perfectionist he is. And it's tough on us, cause we won't get to see it. I'd be really disappointed if it was a new IP because I'm sure he has plenty of ideas to offer us and I don't want to miss a single one.
The gaming industry can be quite unpredictable today. I guess he learned that. I hope everything works out for him, though. He sounds quite disappointed, and it disappoints me as a result.
My guess = MG Rising didn't turn out as he hoped, and Konami won't change it.
Same, I quickly assumed it was to do with Rising. Maybe he's regretting letting those two underlings of his on their own.
However his statement implies something He had direct influence upon.
Awww man, if this is cause for the next full MGS installment to fall through the floor I will be wicked pissed.
It could be his relationship, which last only one year. The problem is in his personal life which made him depressed.

I heard he had been building a "Rapture" proof house and now he doesn't need it anymore!
I built a special pair of underpants for that same reason, but I'm gonna keep wearing em until 21/12/2012.
Can he even create a bad game? 'A Hideo Kojima game' equals quality.
What other games than mgs has he made? Sorry for being the ignorant fool here but I know very little of this man. I just understand that he is huge, according to the crowd here. 🙂
its finally happened Hideo…………. you have lost your mind!
10 free imaginary cookies to the first who can remember what show and what episode thats from.
O, obviously Hideos name was not in there, cant say which one was because it would give it away.
I just made a reference to that ep earlier this week. That's awesome! My wife was telling me about Oprah's last episode and the hype, and I said 'Aw, she's not so great. She got diarrhea when we went to Carlsbad Caverns.' The face she made was priceless.
So, The Simpsons and Bart vs Lisa vs The 3rd Grade.
Send the cookies to 123 Fake Street, c/o Rock Strongo aka Lance Uppercut.
LOL!
i was visiting my aunti on the weekend, and the retirement came up.
i said thank god, now all i need to do is get ellen off the air and ill be free!
cant watch national TV anymore, without getting drowned in bloody hen shows!
….. then got chased with the rolling pin!
wow that was impressive, Pork! 😀
I hope it's not ZOE3, he already hinted he's working on that one so I hope it's not ZOE3 that got scrapped.
Really? I never read any hints = I would have loved to, ZoE2 is the greatest mech game ever created and I'm just hoping for ZoE3 to be made whenever but I haven't heard them say anything like that they're making it?
He did, sorry but I can't get a link.
He only hinted that it might be a go project at some point. I don't think he ever hinted that he was currently working on ZoE3.
Well…maybe he had left his pc on this whole time, was working on stuff, never pressed saved and the power went out? 🙁
Im sure that would make him ecstatic
He was told that one of his projects has to go multi-platform so that means; scaling down his project to fit in a few dvds.
I can see that happening, he got this amazing game he was gonna make exclusive for the PS3 and Konami tells him it must be multiplat and needs to be more westernized 🙁
Most Japanese publishers and developers are out of their minds this generation…
I know he was working on a PS3 exclusive..so I hope it isn't in regards to that..Long as it is nothing Metal Gear related I think I'll survive. Must have been a project of epic proportions if he's feeling like this.
Well that's life, but don't worry.
With enough perseverance and a little cheer from his fans, the light at the end of the tunnel isn't far right off.
Maybe he's going through something personal, and his personal motivation for doing things somehow fell through.
Whatever it is, hope his spirits are lifted soon.
This has probably has to every developer out there but kojima is the only one that will cry about it
For some reason, when I heard this, I thought it had something to do with PSN. I mean he was talking a lot about Cloud based features during the NGP Reveal Conference.
And now after this whole breach and stuff, maybe he's a bit frightened as to the things that might happen to his new MGS game for the NGP, with the PlayStation Network.
I guess the more likely would be something to do with Metal Gear Solid Rising. For he's producing it, but he didn't really have a say as to how the game will play.
I wonder if it has anything to do with the PSP remaster series coming out for the PS3.
He was working on MGS:PW for PS3 – but not just an HD makeover…
Probably bummed out by this news.
He should join Sony. They let their devs be as creative as they want.
I hope Kojima starts feeling better soon. I really don't know what else to say except that I feel bad for him, and I hope he finds the drive to continue going.
Hmmm, I wonder if it might have been something he could've been planning about rebooting Snatcher
