Capcom Views PlayStation Platforms As Primary Software Sellers

The fiscal reports are starting to pop up, and in Capcom's, they say they'll be looking towards the PlayStation 3 to drive software sales.

The report contains several intriguing numbers but for the sake of this article, we'll take the stats that correspond directly to the overall point- Capcom expects to sell a combined 4.9 million software units on the PS3; that 4.9 million will be spread out across 10 new PS3 titles that are scheduled to launch in the fiscal year 2009/2010. The reason why this is so significant is simply due to last fiscal year's results: Capcom's 8 PS3 games only sold a combined 1.75 million units, so this new prediction supports the publisher's belief that Sony's machine is a legitimate player in the market today. By comparison, Capcom expects to see 4.55 million Xbox 360 software units sold, thanks to 11 new games in the upcoming fiscal year, and in what may come as a surprise, the publisher only expects 14 Wii titles to drag in around 2.20 million in sales. In the handheld market, Capcom predicts that 8 new PSP titles will sell around 2.45 million units while 29 DS units will only sell around 2.1 million. …is this the very epitome of quality vs. quantity, or what? The bottom line is that Sony platforms are hugely important to Capcom in the upcoming year, and that's a major point.

Two years ago, a publisher couldn't possibly hope for such numbers. In fact, many were worried that due to the small user base of the PS3, they'd actually suffer losses if they produced an expensive game for Sony's console. Well, as we've said before, times are changing awfully quickly…

Wow… I love Capcom. Hopefully these predictions will mirror what other devs are planning.

It's going to be a good year 🙂

I think some Japanese developers are very relieved that the PS3 is showing strongly in Japan. They have some synergy with Nintendo and Sony there since they are Japanese companies who have a solid focus on their home market. Microsoft is still the foreign upstart. I get the feeling that PS3 selling so strongly and hitting the 3 million unit milestone have been very welcome milestones in the gaming industry in Japan, now the virtuous cycle of stronger hardware sales feeding into stronger game sales can kick in, and developers will refocus on delivering more titles on PS3 – feeding back into better hardware sales, and again better software sales. This is something that will benefit everyone as in the end some of these games that hit big in Japan will make their way West as well, feeding the same virtuous cycle here.

I don't get it. If their 8 games only sold 1.75 mil, why do they expect 10 games to sell 4.9? And if they are expecting those 10 games on PS3 to move more units than 11 games on the 360…why are they putting out more 360 games than PS3 games? Am I missing something here?

Stronger game titles and more PS3s in their home market…

Aah, but that IS the question. Could they really be making 10 exclusives for PS3 and 11 exclusives for 360? No way. It's a case of game lovers buying their multiplats on their favorite system. When your console is aimed at the cheapos of the gaming community then your game sales for that particular console are lower.

If Capcom doesn't cut the BS with timed exclusivity, they're going to lose this customer.

amen. theyve already lost me. I wont buy new games from Crapcom. If theres one i really want ill buy it used from a mom and pop game shop or from private online sellers. Capcom used to be my favorite developer along side of SquareSoft. This pandering to the 360 crowed, giving the PS3 inferior ports has pushed me away from Crapcom. I bought a PS3(RE5 was announced as a PS3 exclusive) cause i was excited for RE5 and what i thought Capcom would do with it on the PS3.They said they wanted to push RE5 to its limits. As soon as they announced it was going multiplatform i new that was the end of my hopes for a fantastic RE game. Pushing it to its limits really meant pushing the 360 to its limits. Instead we got a mediocre watered down port from the 360 version that suffered framerate problems and had inferior graphics just like the 1st Lost Planet. The timed exlcusive Demos, the exclusive demo for Bionic Commando to the 360, the extra goodies for the Championship mode for SF4, the possibility of only releasing a 360 version of LP2 has pushed me over the edge. Crapcom can eat it. i dont know if theres any thing they can do at this point to win me back which is really disappointing cause ive loved Capcom since i MegaMan 1 came out on the NES. They want to rely on PS3 sales, well they havent taken care of us this generation so i dont see any reason why we should support them any longer.

Considering CapCom intends to bring so many PS1/PSN games this year as well as a slew of PS3 titles, perhaps you guys might want to re-evaluate that strongly worded bias?

Chill out Jawknee.Their support for the PS3 has been a million times better than SE and for some reason people still kiss their traitor butts. You should not give up on Capcom yet even thought I don't see them doing anything wrong really.

When Capcom's actions, backup their supposed 'intent' then maybe, I will begin to view them in a more favorable light. Until that time, they amount to nothing more than another SquareEnix type company, who'll say one thing, and do the exact opposite.

Don't get me wrong, I have and always will love Street Fighter, as well as a slew of other Capcom games, but the fact remains, I don't feel they treat all gamers equally. Maybe I have lofty aspirations of you know, companies developing games across all platforms, or…you know, maybe sticking by the words they've announced in their press-releases… Capcom, thus far, seems unable to do that. And if it continues, yes, they will lose me as a customer.

They have been MS's biatch, but I still love them. If they released one great PS3 exclusive all would be forgiven

I don't see the problem with Capcom making money off of MS. Did you stop buying McDonald's when they opened a restaurant in Japan?

pavlovic

Yes they expect us to buy their games and they keep giving timed exclusives demos or exclusive demos to the 360 (RE5 and Bionic Commando)or exlcusive games (Lost Planet 2)

What are they thinking?

I don't think the word give is correct, timed exclusivity is purchased these days, not given.

Highlander is right.Microsoft has been buying anything they can get their greedy paws on.Microsoft has corrupted once beloved companies like Capcom and SE with their filthy money. While I don't really see SE snapping from Microsoft grip and embracing the Playstation brand like before; I do see Capcom embracing Sony more and producing more quality titles for the PS3.

Then it's up to Capcom, to take the high road, and tell MS that they would get more money from a fairly distributed Demo, then exclusivity to the 360. End of Story.

Giving developers a free pass, simply because MS made them do it…um, MS doesn't run their company. They do. If they decide to take money in exchange for exclusive Demo's and Time exclusivity, then they reap what they sow.

Additionally, just in case anyone wants to know, I own a PS3, and I didn't buy Mirror's Edge, because of the exclusive DLC deal. Nor will I purchase Ghostbusters until it's released on all platforms.

You've got to be kidding… You're not buying games because of drop-in-the-bucket add-ons? Whatever.

Enjoy holding on to your imaginary principles, while the rest of us are enjoying great games.

Companies cut deals. It's about money, nothing else, and always has been. Want to know why the NES had such amazing titles, and other consoles didn't? Because Nintendo forced exclusivity from the developers. If you wanted to make a game for the NES, you couldn't make it anywhere else. This stuff has been around from the beginning. It's nothing new.

so with this list stating that 10 games will hit the ps3 and 11 games hitting the 360, i guess its safe to say that Lost Planet 2 is a no show for the ps3.

Shame really, might have been much better than the original but now others may never find out.

I don't get it. They are releasing Dead Rising 2 on the ps3 without even giving ps3 the first game. No problems. But they wont give the ps3 LP2 because it sold poorly on the ps3? kinda backward isn't it?

Capcom has a few gaffe's here and there, but all in all they're one of my favorites. I have a couple of their "classics" titles on PSP, and Monster Hunter 2 is the only game that gets me to dust the sucker off.

capcom makes some awesome games but i heard that they charge for DLC that only unlocks stuff on the disk(street fighter 4 and RE5). if true i hope they don't keep doing that.

they denied doing it on ResE 5, but it's such a small chunk of code i seriously doubt they could fit a whole mode in it.

I've fallen out with Capcom as well. Not over principles reall-though if they choose to take MS money and play their reindeer games that's their fault and not really MS who have no obligation to PS3 owners at all(Capcom do and selling us inferior and less complete versions of games will annoy people). If Capcom expect us to keep buying their stuff then this less than even handed approach could damage them.

But, whatever, that isn't my gripe. I just think they're waaaay off form. DMC4 was cack, SF4 wasn't as good as SF2THDR(and that wasn't perfect), Resi5 was painful when played alone, DR(on 360) was fatally flawed with a useless save system and the damn timer, all of their Wii games post Re4 have been absolute tosh or remakes, LP was terrinly awkward and slow on 360 and added tech hiccups for the weak PS3 port and Mega Man9 I didn't mind.

Now I'd argue that outside of my Dino Crisis obsession the DMC and RE franchises are my two favourites in gaming today(yes I'd prolly forgive everything if they announced a REAL DC3 for this gen)and I found the last installments almost insulting to their heritage-that's without feeling they're shortchanging me for playing multi lats on PS3.

Honestly when people tell me Capcom are still great and still on form this gen I have to wonder f they forgot all the games from the past two generations when Capcom were great. I just want them to make a game that I feel is up to scratch and they just keep failing to do so. And the DLC for SF4 and RE5 was appalling-what a rip off.
