Rising Returns At Platinum With A…Revengeance?

Where did Metal Gear Solid: Rising go? A great many gamers have been asking that question for most of 2011.

Well, believe it or not, it has apparently moved and been renamed. A leaked video from the Spike TV Video Game Awards dropped briefly onto YouTube, and then promptly disappeared. Figures.

But most sources got everything they needed from that leak. It seems the game is now in development at Platinum Games ( Bayonetta , Vanquish ), even though the Kojima Productions label is still on the project. The adventure still features Raiden battling against swarms of futuristic enemies, but the title might now be "Metal Gear Solid: Revengeance." The trailer didn't give an estimated date or platforms, but that's okay for now.

If it really is Platinum cranking on this game, what do you think about a different studio working on a Kojima project? …the fans probably have some interesting comments.

That is quite a surprise.

The question in my mind is, if KP are not developing this, what are they developing?

I dearly hope that they are making MGS5.

Might be why they changed devs for this game. To focus on the next MGS

Well I sure did like vanquish… So it could be worse. Like any intellectual MGS fan I was hoping Kojima was going to grab this by the balls and give another "a Hideo Kojima game" seal of approval. But this will have to do. The story won't hold a candle to the latter, but I'm confident the gameplay mechanic (though nothing like other MGSs) will be very entertaining.

You can definitely tell that it has a Vanquish feel to it.

That scene with Raiden fighting MG Ray reminds me A LOT of the ATB fight scenes in Vanquish.

I loved Vanquish, but I admit that the original style of MGR had me a lot more interested.

If the job was to be passed to another company. I think Platinum are the best guys for the job.

I literally said "What the hell??" when I saw that Platinum games were developing it. I didn't expect that at all.

If that trailer could've been named bayonetta 2 or vanquished 2 i would've believed it. I dont know, the game so far feels like a joke and giving it to people with so little ps3 success (platinum games)says a lot.

Don't go in expecting a Metal Gear Solid game featuring Snake and you'll be fine.

You know what I help wondering with the original creator of DMC working at Platinum Games, how much you wanna bet he jumped on this opportunity so he could compete with the new DmC game being made Ninja Theory lol.

Gotta agree…the music was too…B-Grade action movie, but the action looks EXTREME…lol, very arcady looking game if I might say. Wonder if the story is prominent or the action takes centerstage?

Hmmmm… doesn't sound too good. Might have Kojima lost faith in the project? Or was disappointed with the overall direction so he gave up and sent it to another studio? Questions…questions. Ah well! I'll still play it! 🙂

Poor Kojima seemed to have trouble picking his words at the VGAs… I'm not much of a Metal Gear fan, but even to me that didn't look very…. Metal Geary.

Judging from the video at the awards tonight, I'll pass. A Metal Gear hack 'n slash is not what I'm interested in.

I was expecting a hack 'n' slash from the beginning, so it really didn't surprise me. Still not sure what to think of it though…

556, Except when they first revealed this game way back they promised it wouldn't just be a hack n' slash game. They promised to retain some stealth action as well as the story telling we have come to expect from the MGS franchise. It looks like that stuff went out the window when they handed development over to Platinum.

I mean the over-the-topness looks cool and all….. For a Bayonetta game but here it just doesn't fit. The gameplay in the 1st trailer was much more smooth and fluent and was basically one hit kills with the slicing and while it was a different kinda gameplay for a MGS it still had some MGS feel to it. in my opinion, but now it just feel like Bayonetta with MGS skin over it. In the beginning of the 1st trailer Raiden was using stealth, but now it just looks like a straight up hack n slash; oh well I'm still gonna play it, buy it and probably love it but I'm just saying tho.

Also does anyone else thinks that the graphics have taking a slight step back from the 1st trailer.

Yup I think they did too. I was just thinking that while I started reading your reply. They graphics definitely look toned down from the first time they showed this game.

It may be a good game…but it certainly won't be Metal Gear Solid. What I am glad about is how they changed the name to Metal gear Rising…but boy does this look a hell of a lot different compared to the previous E3 trailer.

Anyway…I really wonder what will come out of this…but I must admit…it looks silly…and unfortunately the Kojima styled silly that actually makes me laugh.

But again…it could be fun.

Metal Gear Rising Revengeance… Odd. Thought the trailer wasn't too bad though. Still certainly looks like MGS4, and I got something of a similar feel from it, and Platinum are definitely good developers for it. Now I wonder what KojiPro is creating…

Jawknee
Jawknee

I don't know what is giving that similar feel other than it's graphics. The tone, the style, the direction, the animations, the dialog reminds me more of Bayonetta than MGS4.

Lawless SXE

The situation in the beginning reminded me heavily of MGS4, as did the art style and cinematic nature of the trailer. That battle at the end, I think, is also reminiscent of the more off-the-wall approach that KojiPro takes to bosses, but keep in mind that I've not played anything by Platinum yet. I'm not writing it off quite yet.

Jawknee

Yea I don't know. Having played Vanquish, some of Bayonetta and every Metal Gear Solid game, this bleeds Platinum more then Kojima or Konami in my mind.

I'll watch the trailer again tomorrow when GameTrailers is running better( it kept stopping)to see if I can spot what you're talking about.

In all honesty…this looks terrible. Reminds me of that craptastic franchise Dynasty Warriors but with more blood, robots and better graphics. Also Raiden looks waaaaay too over powered in this. Is that really supposed to be the same Raiden chopping up Metal Gear Ray that had a hard time killing Vamp?

I'll wait for the reviews. The only reason this game might be fun despite the rest of its turnoffs is Platinum is developing it. Their games tend to be mindless but Vanquish was fun.

His decimation of Metal Gear Ray… As I recall, he did much the same to the GECKOs in MGS4. You have to consider that Vamp was able to fight back mano-a-mano, much as that guy at the end of the trailer there was able to. The balance of strength may indeed be a bit out there though…

Jawknee

True but GECKO's aren't Metal Gears. They appeared slow and rather clumsy compared to Metal Gear Ray. During that last fight between Metal Gear Rex and Metal Gear Ray, I would have never have thought that was something Raiden could do with just his sword. Just seems way too over the top I guess. But than again, it is Platinum. Vanquish was pretty over the top. I think it just doesn't click right with me since they are trying to merge VanquishishBayonettaish style of play with a Metal Gear game.

Lawless SXE

Yeah… I suppose you're right. Then again, Raiden did manage to stop that enormous ship by jamming his sword through his foot.

I'm not sure what to make of Platinum developing it. I know they're good, but are they as good as Kojima Productions? Or better yet, will working under Kojima make them better?

Oh well, I can wait to see, I'd rather play Peace Walker anyway.

Jawknee

"but are they as good as Kojima Productions?"

I don't think so. They are good at what they do but giving a game titled Metal Gear to Plarinum is almost like dragging it through the mud. I don't mean to insult Platinum because I did like Vanquish(didn't care for Bayonetta)but their games are kinda mindless and lack the depth and quality that Kojima Pro and Metal Gear are known for.

Agreed, I got into the Metal Gear Solid games for the mixture of great gameplay AND the fantastic story.

Platinum Games are great at making fun and fast games, but to take the reigns of a Metal Gear game? This leaves me concerned, but slightly intrigued.

kojima productions was only an amazing developer because kojima himself was handling the project. this project was handed to some other guy that konami implied that kojima trusts alot with the game. no kojima control means lower quality game.

We know nothing official on his current projects, but we know of Project Ogre, and the possibilities of ZOE3 and a Castlevania: LoS sequel (though that would likely again be done by MercurySteam, or another external developer).

Well… that looked pretty average, for a Metal Gear game anyway.

For a Platinum Games hack n slash, looks awesome!! If it didn't have the Metal Gear name on it, I'm sure it would be much more popular.

I'm not a big fan of the cheesiness levels being turned up to 11. Revengeance? Really?!?! The screaming guitars and outrageous over-the-top gameplay? Sorry, it might've worked for Bayonetta, but not for a MEtal Gear game.

No wonder Kojima was concerned.

Jawknee
Jawknee

That's my problem with this. When has Metal Gear ever been average? That is why I get this meh feeling from this. Every Metal Gear game has been stellar(yes I would even say MGS2 was stellar in it's own right even though I found it to be the worst in the series). I'm getting that Final Fantasy XIII feeling with this I think. High production values like Metal Gear but still not Metal Gear.

GuyverLT
GuyverLT

In case you were wondering about the name Revengeance it means Revenge with a Vengeance which makes no sense what so ever, they can make fun gameplay but they're characters are so damn cheesy with little to no depth.

LMAO Man seeing this trailer and reading all the comment from facebook, twitter, and youtube, it's DmC all over again, this is like a serious deja vu.

Goodness gracious, I looked up the 2010 E3 trailer, it looked a ton better. This looks absolutely wretched in comparison. What the hell happened?

Beamboom

Oh wow – yes indeed that looked way better.
But also, that wasn't ingame footage, whereas this trailer here seem to be based on that. To judge a game based on pre-redered cinematics is risky business… We remember that Dead Island "family in reverse" trailer and how that turned out to have nothing to do whatsoever with the actual game.

In this trailer here it looks like the main character is just whipping air with his blades. I can't get over how silly it looks… 😀

The second half of the E3 trailer was gameplay footage. They even had a live demonstration of Raiden chopping watermelons using that graphics engine.. They changed the engine for some reason. The graphics and animations look worse now. Especially the animations.

oh the irony!
NT get put on DMC, a massive reboot for the franchise.
the creator of DMC leaves and forms PG, and they get put on this which like DMC is a massive change for the series, and it also looks allot like a DMC game.
looks really good however, i wish they could have severing limbs like NG2 had.
i hate it when sword games dont let you hack off limbs, you slice through a persons arm 1000 times and nothing happens.
i wish more games could have the deformation tech soldier of fortune payback had, every time you shot a enemy that limb came flying off in a fountain of blood!
now thats what a sword fighting game should be like!

This is prcisely what I have been complaining about for over a year. I have told you all countless times that a MGS story after MGS4 will ruin it, I was willing to accept MGSRV Set inbetween MGS2-4 But this is completly unaceptable! This is why they can't continue using the Metal Gear Universe, its just going to become so far fetched! look at that metal gear robot, it was far to over the top to be a MG.

Raiden…. RAIDEN! His story was over! He deserved his peace after MGS4, Spoiler if you care But in MGS4 They even built his body back up again and he was left happy with Rose and his kid. Here they have ignored that done what I call a resurrection. What I am refering to is 'Alien Resurrection' Where they took a fully concluded story and bust it back open again. I can already tell I am not going to like the story and the redundant new characters.

And Platinum games, okay Bayonetta's gameplay was good for that title, but this is Metal Gear and just from that trailer alone I can see they have blown it out of proportion. I am so SO opposed to this, just as much as Ninja Theory (A company I actually like) working on this 'dMc' title.

THIS IS NOT METAL GEAR!
