Eidos Opts To Drop QTEs From Thief Due To “Strong Reactions”

QTEs (Quick Time Events) have their place. But fans of the esteemed Thief franchise didn't think they belonged in Eidos Montreal's upcoming reboot.

And the developer has responded. According to a new blog post , the studio has opted to remove the QTEs from Thief , which is scheduled to launch next year for current- and next-gen consoles.

The decision came after a series of "strong reactions" from gamers and journalists:

"We're not implementing them. To begin with, there were very few instances of QTEs in the game; in fact there was only one in that whole hour-long E3 demo. However, given the strong reactions it evoked in the press and the community, it was an easy decision to do away with them entirely. So we're not doing it. No quick time."

Eidos further confirmed that the game will boast a challenging Ironman difficulty mode, where if the player ever dies, the adventure is over. Good luck with that. Thief is one of my most anticipated titles of the new generation, mostly because I've always adored stealth. If you're a stealth lover, I assume you're keeping a close eye on this one, and you're also happy about the removal of QTEs. Right?

Not a fan of QTE's so this is good news.

Just going a little off topic but you said current and next gen consoles. Now that the PS4 is actually on store shelves, will we start referring to the consoles now as current (PS4/XBONE/Wii U)and past gen (PS3/360/Wii)? Too soon?

God no they don't belong in an FPS, and if they will be anywhere they need to be rethought as to how.

QTEs must go. The industry don't need that to create impressive visuals any more. Please become a relic of the past ASAP. Die.

If there's anything worse than QTEs, it's isolated QTEs that come out of nowhere (i.e. Uncharted 1). I'm glad they're gone. Games are games, not movies. If I want button-press cinematics, I'll go play Dragon's Lair.
