Yamauchi: Gran Turismo 7 Hits PS4 In Only “A Year Or Two”

Gran Turismo 6 hits the PlayStation 3 on December 6. Furthermore, there's talk of it eventually coming to the PlayStation 4 in 2014.

But did you know that another GT installment might not be far off? According to Polyphony Digital boss and Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi, Gran Turismo 7 will actually be out "in a year or two." That's what he told Famitsu, as cited by Polygon .

Yamauchi added that the currently unannounced entry will boast a pretty robust community element:

"The PlayStation 4 game, which we'll likely call GT7, will be done in about a year or two, I think, and I think the community aspect's going to be vital there as well."

Interestingly enough, GT6 is actually only 80% complete, despite the fact that its confirmed launch date is less than three months away. He said the physics engine and the steering controls are things they "fine-tune right up to the very end." Of course, the game modes are complete. So, here's the pressing question- if GT7 isn't too far away, will racing enthusiasts hold off on getting GT6 for the PS4, when and if it's announced?

hehe I really hope no one holds their breath. PD does not have a reputation of hitting any sort of deadline. So when he says 'one or two' years that's before he has realized other things he'll undoubtedly want to do because of the newer more powerful tech. Then the story will change to "we decided it was best to implement these certain features so we're delaying it for another year"

*feels drained after using my crystal ball*

Sorry, but that's a tired argument to me. GT5 is the ONLY game in the franchise that took longer than usual. There was also only one official date that was announced and the delay was only a month.

Kaz is also a developer in his own right. Yes, he loves to push tech, but are we forgetting that the PS3 isn't exactly developer friendly? How much into the generation do we start seeing games like The Last of Us, Beyond Two Souls, Uncharted 3, Metal Gear Solid V, GTAV, etc.? The PS4 is much more simpler, so even if he wants to push it harder early on than most developers, it shouldn't be hard to believe his statement of 2 years. Also, I don't know if people are forgetting, but the engine for GT6 is said to be future proof, yes that includes next gen, meaning, they won't have to build all the coding from scratch, and can simply build upon it. They even have a next gen rendering technology working on the PS3 version (Adaptive Tessellation).

If things are set and clear, his estimates shouldn't be far off. We can already see how GT6 is coming along just as he estimated following GT5.

But yeah, GT5 didn't get managed too well. After GTHD, they probably realized the PS3's potential, even if hard to reach, they became too much into it. GT5 could've been like Forza 3, simple modeled cars with no interiors (ala GTHD). PS3 was certainly a pain. I can imagine a lot of developers realizing its potential, but can't really get there. Only the elites can really push it. With the PS4, I think any dev can master it.

I doubt GT6 will come to the PS4. Im beginning (and have been for awhile) to see GT6 as sort of a GT5 prologue type release.

Either way this made my decision easy. Im not getting GT6. I put to much timw into these games to turn around and another be releasing on the console Id like to play it on anyways at this point.

I can imagine a GT7 for holiday 2015… barely. Then again, the Premium models are effectively next-gen ready, so porting shouldn't be overly difficult, meaning that they can model more cars, tweak the physics and make GT7 more of a game. Of course it's a simulator first and foremost, but adding a better sense of progression would help to bolster the enjoyment for many.

Oh GT6 won't come to PS4 and it won't be a prologue to the PS4 game either.

Ben, GT6 will never come to the PS4. It was just a simple misunderstanding. He was referring to a next gen, PS4 GT, not GT6 for the PS4. Never had. This is also not the first time Kaz has estimated a quicker than usual arrival for GT7, compared to GT5.

If they "call" it GT7 then it's just 6.5 right?

I bet the fact that the game is 80% complete means they plan to finish it after release via updates. That could harm reviews.

That doesn't make sense. The percentage would have to refer to what's planned for retail release. That's what determines the deadline.

Even if true, I doubt the ones that needs to be updated would affect the reviews. The important part of a game is the game mode, and they're pretty much done with that. Anything else, post-release should just be extra content or minor features that shouldn't make or break the game.

Btw, what's up with the whole 5.5, 6.5 stuff? I'm so tired of seeing it. GT6 hasn't even come out yet, let alone GT7 and we're going call it .5?

No actually I see it the other way around. GT6 being GT5.5 with GT7 being a proper GT6. Confusing? Stick with me. GT5 had a long development cycle, to merely upgrade and add some tracks for the same generation of consoles isn't much of a new installment. However that doesnt mean the game worth a purchase I just only imagine upgraded features.

GT7 actually coming out for a new generation of consoles is the proper way to release a true GT game this close to the new consoles. The fact that GT7 is still a year or two out (estimated) leads me to velieve its been in development probably since Sony gave them PS4 dev kits to develop a true GT game for next gen consoles.

Yay, a PS4 GT to platinum a year or two after getting the platinum in GT6 on PS3!

So excited! 😀
