Naughty Dog On Uncharted 4 Story: “No, It’s Not Mass Effect”

Uncharted is still Uncharted (thankfully).

While the upcoming PlayStation 4 exclusive Uncharted 4: A Thief's End is expanding a bit, offering larger playgrounds and a few branching dialogue options, developer Naughty Dog wants us to understand that it will still be a standard action/adventure game.

Concerning that last point about branching dialogue, we saw that option pop up in a trailer last year. Some thought it was evidence that the adventure was adopting deep role-playing elements but in a new Eurogamer interview , Naughty Dog boss Neil Druckmann says simply, this isn't a BioWare game:

"The thing I want to make sure we're clear about is that we're not making Mass Effect. Uncharted has a very specific story, it has a very specific ending that's very definitive to the franchise. But every once in a while we felt a dialogue tree would really bring you more into the scene."

The branching dialogue is indeed limited to a few spots, such as Nate's brother Sam asking about his old adventures. That's when the devs give the gamer a chance to choose which adventure Nate talks about first. "And there's a few other instances like that where it felt like a dialogue tree was just going to get you more into the scene and make it more interactive," Druckmann added.

But it's certainly not going to be an RPG, nor is it going to be an open-world environment. Adding traces of both is fine but let's not annoy the loyal fans too much, right? Square Enix, you taking notes? Anyway, Uncharted 4: A Thief's End is scheduled to launch on April 26 for PS4 and Naughty Dog has explained why this represents Drake's final quest .

There's never a reason to worry about a Naughty Dog game.

Very true, even if they said it was going to be like mass effect I still wouldn't worry.

Except………
for that 3-game "Uncharted Collection", where they chopped out all of the Multi-player portions completely out of all 3 games.

And for the life of me, I can't figure out what ever possessed ND & Sony to F'ing butcher the "Uncharted collection" like they did, since all they had to do is cobble all 3 games together since they already had released each of them intact to begin with.
I mean, WTF??????

@Biker
Hey there budday!

Probably because ND would have had to remaster it themselves if MP was to be included. MP and SP are two different beasts altogether. SP was just about porting a game with few graphic enhancements and whatnot, whilst MP would've probably needed to be coded from the ground up. Remember that TLoU was remastered by ND themselves, and Uncharted was remastered by Bluepoint.

Dang Biker, so passionate! I understand, but is the MP that important? I remember it being quite forgettable during my U2 gaming yrs. Never even dabbled in U3's mp.

Cesar,
OK, that makes a little more sense to me, although it sucks that I thought I was going to get all 3 full games with my Uncharted Collection bundle.

As for it being re-mastered, I find it quite odd that nowhere on the cover art, either front or back, does it say re-mastered.
And every developer I know of has proudly shouted it out in writing somewhere on their own cover art.
Now if ND, BluePoint, and/or Sony considers just porting their old games to the PS4 as being re-mastered, then I have to call BS on that.

FM23,

Nahhh, actually, I'm an SP only mode player & in my whole 63 years, I've only ever played the MP modes in KZ3 & ME3.
But as a collector that's a different story, I'm super-passionate about getting the full package in my games, especially when they were made that way originally.

And as I said above to Cesar, I thought I was getting all 3 "FULL' games, or otherwise I would have never bought the Uncharted bundle at all, & would've just waited till later on for a different bundle that actually had a game I wanted & hadn't played yet

FM23,

Ha, already own all 3 & played them back when they came out, so I don't want or need to re-play them..

Remember, I said I was a collector, that's why I got the "Collection", just to add to mine.
But, had I known that parts of all 3 games were missing, I wouldn't have bought the bundle & I would've just waited for the "Collection" game to price-drop to well under $20 used.

At least they're being straightforward with it. For me that helps because i might've bought the game had they not clarified it is going to be like the others. I would've jumped on the chance to play an Uncharted game that was more open-world and had RPG elements but thats just me.

Plus for those that have liked the games atleast they don't have to worry about it morphing into something they didn't ask for.
