May NPD: Hardware And Software Enjoy Spiking Sales

The PlayStation 4 continues its run in the US, but will May be the last month Sony's console sits atop the hardware charts…?

According to the NPD results for last month, the PS4 led the hardware charge for the fifth straight month in the US. It was a solid month for all gaming hardware in fact, as combined sales of consoles and portables hit $187 million, up 95 percent from the $96 million tallied in May of 2013.

It's also important to note that the surge wasn't entirely due to the PS4 and Xbox One. NPD analyst Liam Callahan said there was growth for the Wii U and Vita, and Nintendo has announced that the 3DS was the second-best selling system during the month. As for software, it was pretty ridiculous:

"May 2014 launches sold 800 percent more in dollar sales than May 2013 launches did their respective launch months."

In terms of total software sales, May saw $274 million, well up from the $175 million brought in during May 2013. Unsurprisingly, the popular Watch Dogs topped the list, while Mario Kart 8 was the runner-up:

PS4 keeps rolling on. Every time I read an article suggesting the X1 is ready to even the race I'm met with the same monthly statistics showing it to be wrong.

I think June will be the big indicator for how things will go for the rest of the year. One can assume a portion of prospective XO buyers held off on a new console purchase to get it at $399.99. Assuming this, we should expect a sales spike in June. But the question I have is, will it be enough for MS to even take a month? Titanfall and Titanfall XO bundles weren't enough. Maybe $100 off the top of the unit will be.

Agreed. June "should" tell the story, but I have a feeling that the tale will be awfully familiar and have a BLUE tint to it. 😉

How it should be. Those numbers will go up after E3.

It's kinda weird to find The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in the middle of that list. Goes to show the power of movie licences.

Kids eat that stuff up, man. They don't care about how "good" a game is, either.

I laughed out loud when my local reviewer called the movie "The Adequate Spider-Man" cuz it wasn't so good.

I got an itty bitty crush on Emma Stone, so I didn't mind it so much.
