Could Titanfall Hurt inFamous: Second Son’s Sales Potential?

Whenever there's a clash between two major exclusives, one for each competing platform, there's always a story behind it.

Respawn Entertainment's hotly anticipated Titanfall is scheduled to land in March for the Xbox One and Xbox 360. Sucker Punch's inFamous: Second Son releases in March as well, and it's exclusive to the PlayStation 4.

Although the inFamous sequel does get a fair amount of attention, Titanfall is undoubtedly the headline leader right now. Not all of those headlines are 100% positive (some don't like that 6-on-6 restriction, and there's talk of low-res alpha textures being in the final version), but it's definitely the most anticipated Xbox One title right now. One could say inFamous: Second Son is the most anticipated PS4 game, even though its title may not be as…well, sexy, as Titanfall 's is right now.

The question is whether or not the latter can potentially hinder the sales success of inFamous . Maybe it won't matter, because very few individuals have both consoles in question, so most won't have to decide between the two games come March. Then again, maybe if Titanfall rakes in rave reviews – it launches first, remember – this could amp up Xbox One sales and as a result, overshadow Second Son . Unless you've got an unlimited income, you probably won't want to buy the Xbox One, Titanfall and inFamous in the same week.

On the other hand, maybe it could all backfire on Respawn and Microsoft. Maybe Titanfall will fall shy of those lofty expectations, and inFamous will further solidify the PS4 as the generational leader.

What do you think will happen?

Sadly yes I think Titalfall will have more sales than inFamous Second Son. Not because the game won't be awesome, but simply for the fact that Titanfall is releasing on Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC. More users means more copies sold. Now will the game be better overall than inFamous? Don't know and it'll boil down to user preference on that. I just know multiplayer is going to be the main thing that folks will no doubt lean more towards. I'm getting inFamous as well as Titanfall, on PC of course.

I think Titanfall will definitely sell more because it's a multiplayer game. You can pass your infamous game to your friends, but you and all your friends will need to purchase Titanfall together to enjoy it. (Assuming the quality of both games are equal) The multiplayer advantage will make it sell twice if not 3 times as much as a single player game.

Titanfall had better be good, all of MS's hopes are riding on that game.

Can't see how it they would be in direct competition though.

It doesn't have to be good. Bad games sell just fine on the xbox platform. That's the really sad part.

I don't think so, not much anyways. If you have the cash to buy both consoles in such a relatively short time, you probably have enough to buy both games if you want. I'd hardly say they're in direct competition.

As for the hardware sales they'll most likely make, the audiences for both games are fairly different. Besides that, Titanfall isn't exactly a complete exclusive.

TitanFALL is not exclusive though. It will not selk X1s even if it was.No one I know even heard of the game in person so dont believe the online hype.

Well, it's not coming to PlayStation. I clarified that Titanfall is coming to Xbox 360 as well.

no ones heard of the game?
seriously?
you do realise its won countless E3 awards, and at every single convention its had by far the longest line!
in fact titanfall was the only game i did not get to play at the EB expo last year because the queue was so long!
friday it was so long they had to shut the que down 4 hours before closing time because it was taking on average 4 hours queuing to get in, and saturday and sunday were more than 6 hours!
no ones heard of it my a$$!
might as well say no one has heard of CoD, THE best selling game in the HISTORY of the industry!

Titanfall is available on pc and from what I've seen FPS people tend to prefer pc over console, so I'd expect Titan to sell better on pc or 360 than anywhere else.

As far as Infamous, everyone with a ps4 should be on edge waiting to buy it and it should sell systems.

Yeah I'm getting it on the PC, and so are many people I have talked too. There is no reason to buy an X1 for that game.

From what I've seen it looks as if all X1 games will be on pc, I haven't seen anything yet that is truly exclusive to the new box.

I'm also getting it for PC but it will still sell a massive amount on consoles.

I don't see how either would affect eachother at all. Completely different games, 2 different consoles, it won't matter. Those that want infamous will get it and those that want Titanfall will get it.

It'll only affect Infamous in so far as people who are looking to jump into next gen around that time are going to have a choice between two consoles that (IMO, at least) only have one exclusive game that NEEDS to be played. Those exclusives are Infamous and Titanfall. If I were someone who wasn't deep into Infamous already I'd be leaning toward Titanfall.

Well…its not really an Xbox exclusive if its going on pc is it?

Depends on how you view it. I say it is because it's considered exclusive in the console war.

It is available on 360 though and I see a lot of console only peeps just sticking with their old system for now.

No idea. One's a multiplayer-only shooter. The other is an SP-only action-adventure game. Could they affect the sales of each other? Certainly. But I think that the two are aimed at very different audiences. Nevertheless, I think I would have to give the sales edge to Titanfall, simply because it is being pushed so damn hard by MS. I mean, the damn game is everywhere and everyone that I know that's gone hands-on with it has been spreading word of its awesomeness. Not that it interests me…

Go Second Son!

Respawn Entertainment is made up of some very talented individuals and I'm sure Titanfall will push the sales of a bunch of Xbones.

I could get it for PC but I'm a Linux user so I'd have to install a windows installation on another drive to play it (both of which I have) but it's just not worth even that little bit of hassle for me.

For me, it's just another FPS. If the hype is to be believed, it may just be the best FPS, but it's still an FPS.

These two games are complete polar opposites in my eyes.

inFamous: Second Son
PlayStation 4 Exclusive
Single player with no Online Multiplayer

Titan Fall
XBoxOne Exclusive*
Strictly Online Multiplayer

Even if TitanFall does great any effects it has on inFamous will be minimal. If it fails terrible it may have a powerful effect on PS4 sales and in turn I:SS sales too. TitanFall is the Xs killer App. Will MS hours it is. Without it things go down a steep hill for MS.

Difficult to say.

For those interested in 2nd Son they would have to also own a decent spec PC or an XB1 to get Titanfall instead. I don't think that is a high proportion of the PS4 audience.

for those who have both systems it may, but if you have both systems than your going to want new games to show off both systems now arent you?
so not really no, i mean it may effect infamous sales a little, but most people who want both games are going to buy both anyway.

There people like you go again. Comparing completely different games just because they're exclusive to a certain system. It's like comparing comparing Uncharted with Pokemon.

I don't understand how…. Since both games are on different consoles…

I don't think it matters much at all. Maybe, MAYBE for those who got both consoles, but if Infamous too turns out to be good I think at worst it will only delay a purchase of Infamous.

Had at least one of them been multiplat then we could talk about Infamous getting overshadowed. But as things are today, with both games being inaccessible on the other platform, I doubt it matters much.

Teddie9

Yeah it's certainly not an outright competition between the two.

I don't know what sales will end up being, I just know that Infamous is about 100 times more interesting to me than Titanfall. I could get Titanfall on PC but the thought hasn't even crossed my mind.

When I eventually get a PS4 I'll certainly get Infamous though.

xenris
xenris

I don't think it will hurt Infamous sales at all really.

I doubt there are many people with both consoles thinking which one to get. If they have both consoles and get Titanfall then they probably wouldn't have gotten Infamous even if Titanfall didn't exist. I'm only saying that because the games are quite opposite in terms of gameplay style. Sure both are shooters but they will attract completely different people.

Even if Titanfall gets massive reviews, its out on the 360 as well, and we all know how many people already have one of those right, so I think a lot of people are just going to get it for that system providing they don't have a good PC to play it.

Infamous is not going to sell as much because it is only on the PS4, Titan has 3 platforms to sell on. However I think Infamous sill sell very well.

Eh, I'm not so sure. I think there aren't too many people this early on who own both systems, and most of us bought one or the other with the eye on these March releases as the first big exclusive we would look forward to. Titanfall's gonna be a big hit, no question, but I'm not sure it's going to poach many of Infamous' potential customers.
