Ben’s Week In Review: September 18

Had it not been guaranteed to be a steaming pile of horse manure, I'd be ridiculously excited for Final Fantasy XV . But this will be the first FF I completely ignore.

Doesn't matter; I've got GOOD games I can play, like Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

I finally got around to picking this up and though I've only played the first few hours, it's pretty much what I wanted.

I really like the fact that we had a big recap of Human Revolution 's storyline because I didn't remember any of it. It's also great that we have the option of selecting the exact same control scheme as the last game, and Adam Jensen remains a pretty bad-ass character. I'm more than a little tired of the "one group being oppressed" theme that I'm so sick of I could just puke, but it's not only gaming that seems fixated on this topic. Besides, there are more philosophical angles to the plot in Deus Ex games, so I hope those come to the forefront at some point.

The graphics are good but not great (standard fare for this franchise) and I certainly appreciate the freedom. It bugs me a little that you actually use energy to perform any kind of Takedown (was it like that in Human Revolution ?) but I'll get used it. I expect a fantastic adventure, that's for sure.

Zero interest in PS4 Pro

I don't even have a 4K TV and even if I did, I still wouldn't bother with the PS4 Pro. What's the point? Unless I want to stream 4K movies, why bother? The system doesn't even have a UHD Blu-Ray player so I still can't run 4K discs in there, whether they were movie or game. And we're so far away from true 4K gaming that I can't imagine why I should care either way. $400 for some upscaling? Seriously? Yeah, I saw some of the enhanced games, like Horizon: Zero Dawn , running on PS4 Pro and frankly, I don't think it's a drastic difference. Again, I don't have 4K TV and as a shockingly tiny amount of any entertainment is available in 4K right now, I can't conceive of any logical reason to spring for 4K tech.

Just let me know when games can be made in 4K. Then maybe I'll consider getting a system that specializes in 4K. Until then, I'm not paying another $400 – after spending that much only 3 years ago – for a PS4 1.5 basically, which amps up the frame rate a bit. I mean, yay. I expect PS5, or whatever the next PlayStation system is, will be the one I end up getting.

The Last Guardian delayed again?!

I know it's still coming out this year (December now, I guess) but when Yoshida said it was to take care of a few remaining bugs, I had to shake my head. What's he talking about? You had how long to make this game? And we're still talking about bugs in the final product? Besides, what's two months going to do? I wonder if there isn't some other reason they pushed it back…perhaps because historically, not much comes out in December and you don't have to directly challenge the likes of Battlefield 1 , Dishonored 2 , and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare , all of which will be out in late October and early November.

Maybe Sony just wants to give Guardian the best possible chance to succeed because if it doesn't after a good 8 years of talking about it, well, there will be some serious backlash.

Coming up…

It'll be all about Mankind Divided for a while and as Guardian has been delayed, maybe I'll finally go back to do the Blood and Wine expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt . But I also replayed the first episode of Life is Strange because I never got past the second episode and I've always wanted to finish it. Those of you who really enjoy story-driven experiences like Heavy Rain or Until Dawn will definitely want to check it out if you haven't already. It has some teen angst crap that I just can't abide but I can overlook it (for the most part). 😉

FFXV is showing some nice visuals as of late though I still need the reviews to tell me if it'll be worth my time.

It would seem the general reaction to PS4 Pro has been mostly negative. I believe a part of this is because we've all known for so long it's been coming, left to stew over what it could all mean. Where we had Sony holding off of revealing much of anything other than it exists. So here it is after months of theorizing over what it may be. Is it more powerful because of the Scorpio announcment? Will it start a new-gen of gaming? Nope. It's the old original info we've known for so long. It can render games in a higher res or render them with better details in HD. It's $400. Get it if you want it. Don't want it? Don't worry. We'll all be playing the same games anyway.

Marketing wise I predict Sony is in for some trouble.
They're launching the PSVR next month. Then the PS4 Pro the following month. All the while they have their regular slimmer PS4. And their abandoned handheld called the Vita.

I can't help but think Sony's confused message of what it means to buy into their brand is just going to hurt them.

I can just see the gamers at Gamestop trying to explain all the different ways to game on PS.
Salesman: "So if you want PSVR you're going to REALLY want the PS4 Pro."
Customer: "Why?"
Salesman: "See, the PS4 isn't powerful enough to do proper VR games so within a year you'll be wanting to upgrade anyway. So you might as well trade in your current PS4 now. We'll give you $150 towards your PS4 Pro for it right now. I can take your pre-order"
Customer: "Wait. So it's $400 for the PSVR. Plus another $60 or so for the required camera that doesn't come with it. And I probably need the Move controllers? Then I need to re-buy my PS4 for an upgraded one for the 4KTV I don't have and to make games like Farpoint actually look half decent?"
Salesman: "Yes, and we have a 2 year warranty to sell you on it all as well"

I bet MS's straight forward approach this holiday will cash in on this.
First off the Xbox One S is one slick value. A good deal on 4K HDR Blu-ray players right now is $300. Yes. The same price as an Xbox One S that comes with a bundle of games and more.
It looks nice. It's cheap. It plays most all of the hottest most advertised games. And it can play a growing library of 360's games. Some even running better on Xbox One (and some worse). I think MS will dominate the US for the rest 2016, perhaps beyond. Sony on the otherhand will be facing the backlash of poorly reviewed VR games and gaming editors turning their nose up to PS4 Pro because they'd rather game on their PC anyway.

I liked what I saw in the TGS trailer and still have FF15 preordered. I can't see it being a bad game, but I don't know if it is going to amazing.

Watch the Kingsglaive its the CG movie, it is pretty good. Also the anime is on youtube I believe and it is pretty good 🙂

I have no idea what the PRO is about. I just hope they don't make games for it and leave the original adopters out in the cold.

Thanks Xenris. It seems the consensus is that FF fans ought to watch Kingsglaive.

The newer videos of FFXV show that the game definitely can look the part. We'll just see how the game play holds up. I can live with it being more of an action based RPG. It just needs to be a good game to earn my time.

As for PS4 Pro. Sony made it known that the system is intended only as a premium version of the same generation of hardware. It's not something to blur the lines.

And really, it can't do that even if it wanted anyway. The boost it's received is pretty much there only to support the better graphics. The CPU still can't hack it. Not even Rise of the Tomb Raider can hit a solid 60fps while running in 1080p mode on PS4 Pro. The CPU is a bottleneck. This likely also rules out something like the current-gen Assassin's Creed games from being Pro patched to run at 60fps. Probably not Syndicate and definitely not Unity.

We should expect a proper generational upgrade a few years from now with PS5.

I was surprised by how much I liked Kingsglaive. It's no cinematic leader or anything, but for fans of FF who at least have an idea about the overall story FFXV is going to be, it's a decent watch.

I went in with a cynical "this should be good…" and left with modest approval.

Takedowns have always taken energy in Deus Ex. You'd be way overpowered if they didn't. You can always upgrade your energy converter augs to recharge cells quicker, always leaving you with one in the hole if you need it. Biocells are pretty common in the world, I think when I beat the game I had a stockpile of 26 of them.

Yep same here, zero interst in the pro:i agree with you for 100 %.

Deus Ex and Dishonored 2 are my most wanted this year,i really loved Deus Ex HR.

The last Guardian:sigh….it's time man give it to us this year….

PGU:Fallout 4 Nuka world is awesome and biiiiig!,
after this i will finish my home[my trophy room] and my playboy-mansion ehhh playboy-vault :).

IF i would buy me a next console it would be the Scorpio[60fps[guessing here]/bc/mods],but i'm not sure,i mean i had no 360 so the bc would give me some really nice games:i would have the best from both,[maybe the scorpio is also not a big step forward and in that case it would be the xbox S] but for now it's just maybe….

Hey Ben, can you actually leave for good? I cannot believe how trash this piece is.

How was FFXV destined to be garbage? Because of some mental delusion you created due to the game not being turnbased?

Its fine not to be interested in the Pro, especially if you have no desire to get a 4K TV. Just dont spout ignorant BS. Have you seen the the thing in action to actually witness the difference? No you have not.

Maybe it was best for this place to die, you have become just as toxic as most of the internet is. Good day.

I'd say FFXV was destined to be garbage because it's being made by a developer that no longer knows how to make Final Fantasy games, as evidenced by every single FF game since XII.

Sayword, The FFXV demo created plenty of reason to be concerned. Also, S-E hasn't been able to nail an FF since the PS2 days. So rightfully, confidence in FFXV ought to be low.

"How was FFXV destined to be garbage? Because of some mental delusion you created due to the game not being turnbased?"

There are probably a half-dozen editorials of mine with constant disclaimers ABOUT HOW I DON'T GIVE A SHIT IF THE GAME IS TURN-BASED and that EVERY LAST RPG I'VE LOVED IN THE PAST FIVE YEARS HAS BEEN REAL-TIME. And that FFXV's piss-poor gameplay and obvious focus on action as opposed to role-playing elements is why the game will blow.

I can't repeat myself anymore to morons who ask the same shit and never read a word. One of the big reasons I had to get the hell away from the gaming community.

"Its fine not to be interested in the Pro, especially if you have no desire to get a 4K TV. Just dont spout ignorant BS. Have you seen the the thing in action to actually witness the difference? No you have not."

let's try to address some issues here…

"I don't even have a 4K TV and even if I did, I still wouldn't bother with the PS4 Pro. What's the point?"
-Ben

You don't need a 4K TV to enjoy the benefits of a higher resolution. By not having a 4K TV, the only benefit that you will not see is the extra 6,220,800 pixels that's available in a 4K TV, that are otherwise missing on a 1080p screen. Other than that, you will see better antialiasing, better framerate, better lighting, overall better graphics, smoother gameplay, a more enjoyable game, etc.

Furthermore, here is a question from the official Sony FAQ

"Q: Will PS4 Pro require a 4K TV?
No. PS4 Pro can display much higher resolutions than the standard PS4 when using a 4K TV. But if you own an HDTV (720p, 1080i, 1080p), PS4 Pro can still improve your gaming experience."

They don't go into detail, of course, but you can read above what I wrote. I gave some examples why you don't need a 4K TV.

"Unless I want to stream 4K movies, why bother? The system doesn't even have a UHD Blu-Ray player so I still can't run 4K discs in there, whether they were movie or game."
-Ben

While it doesn't technically support 4K Blu Rays, it will still upscale regular Blu Rays to 4K. Same with video games.

"And we're so far away from true 4K gaming that I can't imagine why I should care either way."
-Ben

This is false. Flat out. You can experience true native 4K media on PC. I can easily max out and run GTA V at native 4K. Granted, I don't have a 4K monitor, but like I said above, I gain all the benefits out of 4K minus the extra 6,220,800 pixels.

"$400 for some upscaling? Seriously?"
-Ben

I'll give you that, it is basically upscaling. However, developers are free to choose with what they want to do with the extra power. They can deliver higher framerate at 1080p or higher resolution at the cost of frame rate. Not only that, what the Ps4 does at only $400 is quite impressive. You wouldn't be able to match a PC in specs that does the same performance as a PS4 pro (anecdotal, Ps4 pro isn't out yet).

"Yeah, I saw some of the enhanced games, like Horizon: Zero Dawn, running on PS4 Pro and frankly, I don't think it's a drastic difference."
-Ben

You would definitely be able to see the difference if you saw the gameplay from the source. YouTube doesn't do graphics any justice as they compress their videos to garbage. But wait, there's more! Sony also advertised that their Ps4 Pro uses HDR. You need an HDR capable TV to be able to see HRD. I'm afraid that whatever TV you've got going on there doesn't support HDR.

"Again, I don't have 4K TV and as a shockingly tiny amount of any entertainment is available in 4K right now,"
-Ben

I'm going to file this under "Ben's personal opinion". In addition, I'm going to give you my 2 cents, Netflix has been confirmed to support 4K on PS4 Pro. So if you personally like 4K Netflix shows and you have a TV for it, this might be a worthwhile upgrade.

"I can't conceive of any logical reason to spring for 4K tech."
-Ben

There are many reasons to upgrade that are beneficial. I listed them above.

"Just let me know when games can be made in 4K. Then maybe I'll consider getting a system that specializes in 4K."
-Ben

Just about any game on PC can be played in 4K.

"I'm not paying another $400 – after spending that much only 3 years ago"
-Ben

"for a PS4 1.5 basically, which amps up the frame rate a bit."
-Ben

So you can conceive of logical reasons to upgrade?

"I expect PS5, or whatever the next PlayStation system is, will be the one I end up getting."
-Ben

With all that being said, it's this type of misinformation and fanboyism which I was subject to when I was younger and ignorant that held me from upgrading to a PC. For the record, I don't own a PS4 anymore, I've upgraded to PC over a year ago. I still miss the exclusives though, but it's sad to see when people can't see or ignore the obvious. A stronger system = better gaming. Ben purposefully likes to live in the gaming stone edge. I'm not sure why he does that and I'm totally okay if he wants to do that to himself. I have a problem though when he spreads false information. I just can't sit back and do nothing about it. If he hasn't experienced a PC for example, what makes him certified to be talking about it in the first place?

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=PC%20Elitist&defid=6820189

Did you crawl out of Eurogamer/Digital Foundry. Perhaps we should spend more time talking about tweaking and tweaking and tweaking settings to squeeze out those little extra pixels till we realize we've been yapping on about the hardware and max settings and forgot to talk about the games themselves.

Temjin001
Temjin001

PS4 games running on a 4KTV with PS4 Pro can run at a resolution much higher than 1080p. About twice the number of pixels are actually being rendered over the PS4 standard. Which means about 4 million rendered pixels per frame, up from Ps4's 2 million.

Native 4K rendering requires about 8 million pixels. So yes, upscaling is involved but it's not all the PS4 Pro is doing. Sony is also doing some things to help make the rendered image look better than it ordinarily would through something called "checkerboard" rendering. Apparently it brings the image closer to the 4K standard than it ordinarily would be at the resolution it's rendering.

BTW. Rendering a game at native 4K on PS4 Pro isn't out of the question. It only is if we're talking current-gen games at the level of detail, frame rate, and complexity we're used to.

Older games, like games made for PS3, re-mastered for PS4, could be able to hit the 4K target natively.

Apparently Naughty Dog confirmed TLoU Remaster will run at a native 4K resolution on PS4 Pro, but only at 30FPS.

So yes, it can be done. Just don't expect something like Uncharted 4 doing it.

The thing is that there's a lot of wrongful information in his article. I just wanted to tell him otherwise. There are benefits to a more powerful system, you don't need a 4K TV to experience the benefits.

Hehe – *classic* Ben reaction.
People must be allowed to disagree, Ben. Nobody dictates what "you're allowed to think". They just disagree, and argue for why. "Living in the stone age" – oh come on. Was that really such a unbearable insult?

How is it even possible to have this thin skin? That's the huge mystery on this site that's always puzzled me. What is the story behind that?

Actually you wont necessarily see improved FPS with the pro. You might see a better lock and less frame drops, but unless the devs specifically add in an option for FPS, like what Tomb Raider has done, better FPS isnt a thing for the console.

Also it will support "native" 4k. Why the ""? Because Guerilla and Naughty Dog are gonna be playing with the API to achieve this. They (and others could too if they want) will use a shortcut, having larger per pixel conversion, to achieve it but it will be "native" 4k.

The amount of 4k content is kind of small, give that one to Ben, compared to other media libraries such as 1080p at the moment.

The HDR thing is weird for me. Right now the only TV's that seem to support it are 4k as well. So it's kind of like you need the one to get the other. Odd choice.

""Living in the stone age" – oh come on. Was that really such a unbearable insult?"

If I said it, you'd have a hernia and write nine paragraphs about why I'm wrong and why people are allowed to "disagree" without being insulted.

But of course, that only applies to me. Your little rules never did apply to anyone else, did they, Beamboom? I'm sure you can rationalize why a series of unfounded statements and insults about me are perfectly fine ("oh come on, it's not an unbearable insult"), and why I'm not even allowed to write a simple post basically saying, "no, I don't think I live in the stone age." Because that's all I did. And by the way, that "stone age" statement isn't a "disagreement." It's an accusation. You honestly can't tell the difference?

Well, whatever. As you can't be wrong, I guess a rationalization or explanation isn't required, is it?

Beamboom
Beamboom

That "stone age" comment is just a stupid little childish expression – is it insulting? Perhaps, if you got really really fragile skin.

But you've *always* been like this, Ben. If someone disagress, and especially when they do so with arguments that's legit, you flip. Each time. You've done so for YEARS now.
My "rules" are that people gotta friggin' handle being argued against. That's my "rule".

I think you need to read your post again. "I don't think I live in the stone age" is so far from the essence of that post you can get. 😀

"Gee, I sure miss people telling me what I'm allowed to think and in fact, what my gaming habits are (i.e., "living in the stone age").

…oh wait, don't miss it at all.

Never will I be involved with the gaming community on any level again, thankfully. They've never grown up and they never will."

Look at this butthurt reply. Never again will you have ANYTHING to do with this mean, mean community. Oh so mean. Cause what we do is tell you what you are ALLOWED to think. They want to dictate your thought, is what these mean mean guys.

If all you replied was a "I don't think I live in the stone age" – or maybe even discuss the arguments put forward, that'd be another matter.

But no. Awwww you mean mean MEAN guys! I don't want to have anything with you to do again! Boohoo…

I just don't get why you, adult man, can get so ignited by so little. Burst into flames for what's essentially just a disagreeing post. Is it immature put? At times, yes. But I mean, if you can't handle *this*, then don't ever get kids!

Speaking of horse manure tried Deus Ex Mankind Divided and it ranks right up there with Final Fantasy XV. I cant believe i brought this trash out of hype. Then again again i did the same thing with MGS 5: Phantom Pain. ZZzzZZ .

I Couldn't careless about about the PlayStation 4 pro or the new Xbox for that matter 4k gaming is just a waste of money. Wake me when the PlayStation 5 is announced.

Speaking of Zero hype after the last delay i'll be ignoring The Last Guardian. I was hype but now its just mehh The Last Guardian is the new Duke Nukem Forever.

PGU: Deleted Deus Ex from my hardrive for Bioshock The Collection and so far i'm really enjoying playing the first one again.

Love Rocket League. My friend and I are irresponsible about going to bed on time, so if we're playing something else, one of us will mention, "I'm smithing" which means, "I'm falling asleep, lets switch to Rocket League for a few games before bed".

The term "Smithing" is named after another friend of ours whose last name is "Smith". He ALWAYS falls asleep while playing games. Doesn't matter what it is.

"Just let me know when games can be made in 4K"

PC man. It'll cost you around $1500-2200 depending on whether you would want the titan, but true 4k60 is finally achievable. Of course that doesnt included the monitor which would be around another $1000. Ben as you are with the 4k stuff, I am with the VR stuff. Im sure somebody somewhere will shit their pants over it, but it just doesnt appeal to me.(4k doesnt either honestly)

As for the "new-gen" consoles Im thrilled! Just bought a PS4 for $299 brand new,(the Uncharted Blue one, dont really care about the game but the color is really pretty.) and picked up a white Xbox One for $249. I dont need a thing the "new" console have, but Im more than happy they are here for the discounts on the "old" stuff.

The new Final Fantasy, just got to play the demo on my new toys :), seems to me like Kingdom Hearts. Makes sense, I believe the original director also does the Kingdom Hearst series. Either way it seems fun to me, but I have just played the one demo.

*If your interested, I honestly dont see a big difference between the Xbox and PS4. The games all look and play great. Honestly the only things to me are the PS4 OS feels quicker. I have issues browsing the Xbox store, very laggy and it likes to crash. However the Xbox storage option is fantastic! When I want more storage I just hook it up, whereas Im already having to order a 2TB hdd for the PS4 because I know its gonna fill up.

But yeah thats about it. Looking forward to playing "next-gen", already got AC4 for Xbox and Uncharted when I get my new hdd for PS4, and having a ball.

For the record, I'm totally down for the PS4 Pro. As a gamer, you always want to the best system of the time. I don't have a 4K TV, either, and not sure when I'll get one. It doesn't matter, cuz the Pro will run games smoother and with higher res, which is perfectly fine.
Also, selling my old PS4 to cover the cost of the Pro means I'm not shelling out $400 for one.

Can we all be friends again?

I might get the pro when the price is a 100 cheaper.

I will probably wait on the VR. Being a new tech it might have reliability problems. Also I might barf playin it.

So many flavors out there but you choose to be salty.

Hard to believe you were born in 1986. You were probably born in 2006 because you definitely comment and behave like a child.

@Ben: This is another example of junk you're in all rights to be annoyed by. But again – ignore or delete. Don't even bother entering a dialogue.

That's how you should have handled it since day one.

The owner's indifference killed the site, but whatevs. I'm sure coming here to fling poo feels good.

If "owner indifference" was the reason, this site would have been dead before Ben even got a job here.

Ben joined like a decade ago, man. The owners have a new business venture they're pursuing.

You think it's a coincidence everything died the moment Ben got a new job?

Look at the things Ben could never control, like site design and functionality… antiquated. The only updates that really took place were the articles.

And the ownership has been indifferent all that time. Arnold and Val haven't cared about this place for quiiiiite awhile, and I don't necessarily blame them. This site was dead for long before Ben quit. Community participation was basically nil, with most articles having one or two replies unless Ben got into it with someone and the ensuing argument created 50 posts.

Not even saying it's Ben's fault; that's an entirely different discussion that I don't care to have. Asking one guy, regardless of who it is, to cover an entire industry, even limited to one platform, is just asinine.

Oh I agree it's been in slow decline. This isn't a "this past year" or "when Ben quit" thing.

When talking with World, we often talk about how the first real signs started like more than 5 years ago. There's a couple times we both thought it should have been sold. I mean, Ben tried to do more advanced things, like video reviews, community participation events, giveaways, etc. etc. And given his skillset, he didn't do too bad of a job. But really, those kinds of advancements shouldn't be handled by writers, it should be done by people who have expertise in videography, design, etc.

Had they sold it 5+ years ago while there was still an income worth building, this site had the chops to justify hiring the right person or 2 to work full time on that back end. Heck, 5+ years ago, this site could easily eclipse 100 comments on any given topic. Uninteresting ones still got a few dozen.

Think about what could have been possible if the site had kept up with the times.
