I'm in a bit of a gaming lull; I took a little time off after beating I Am Setsuna to watch the Olympics and catch up on some Netflix stuff.
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is getting good scores!
I see on Metacritic it isn't scoring quite as high as Deus Ex: Human Revolution (one of my favorite games of 2011) but I'm satisfied with the new one sitting at 85.
For one thing, I'm convinced critics are a little harsher on games than they've been in the past, as it's becoming increasingly rare to find any game that averages a 9+ score. There are only a small handful each year that manage to do that. And I like what I'm reading from the reviews; they're basically saying it's a bigger, deeper version of the last installment, and that's precisely what I wanted. I did see some people saying this is actually a downside, in that the art direction and gameplay is actually too similar to Human Revolution . Well, we'll have to see.
Provided it's another great action/RPG with a solid story and the boss fights have been fixed (and it appears they have), I'm sure I'll love it. 🙂
How could you NOT laugh at FFXV's delay?
11 years in development and it's still not done. These people have been so horribly lost on this project for so long that it's starting to feel like one giant joke. Now I hear it "needs another two months."
Yeah, no. The entire thing needs to be scrapped and someone at Square Enix needs to figure out what kind of game they want to make. They have no idea, clearly. If you want to turn it into Kingdom Hearts , fine, but it can't control that poorly. It can't have zero semblance of role-playing strategy. It can't feel like preparation is essentially pointless provided you just hit the buttons well enough. That's not an RPG. It never was and it never will be. All this delay proves is that they're so disoriented and disorganized over there, that they're flailing about at the last second, desperately trying to fix a bunch of crap before it goes out the door.
If I was 99 percent convinced this game was going to be junk before, I'm now 100 percent convinced.
No Man's Sky is…okay, it seems
If you'd ask me to guess at the average review score for this one before it came out, I would've said 7. And lo and behold, that's precisely what it's getting . I've read a few reviews; it's about what I expected. The idea that there was some sort of story or narrative wasn't really true, as I anticipated, though I know you can follow a certain path to the "end," so-to-speak. This is really more for those who simply love to explore and enjoy the idea of seeing new things every time they play (and nobody else is seeing that stuff, either). I imagine it's perfect for MMO players and the like but it never was for me.
The urge to play an old game springs anew…
This always happens when nothing too pressing sits on the back burner. And I invariably think about playing one of the my "Big 3:" Final Fantasy Tactics , Castlevania: Symphony of the Night , or Final Fantasy VII . If I choose either of the FFs, I almost never finish; I just play it until something new really grabs my attention and forces me back to modern day. But SotN is a nice go-to because I can play it the way I want to play it (200.6% complete, get all the best equipment, etc.) in 7-8 hours. But I still have to see about that Blood and Wine expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt . Hmm…
Deus Ex does look good. And 85 is a dang solid metacritic score. Anything in that range could possibly be valued by me along side the highest scoring games.
It seems the core criticisms I've read have most to do with the story. Arguments are made about it not really going anywhere with no solid direction.
I'm hesitant to play it right away for a few reasons.
One. Despite having played through the first two games I only played a little of the last game. I don't like the feeling of missing a chapter in a series.
Two. I'm halfway through another huge RPG and that's Xenoblade Chronicles X. I don't want to lose focus to another big game until it's finished.
If S-E wants more time to finish FFXV they can have it. The tech demo thing they released was rough and showed they needed more time. If the game pulls in 80+ on metacritic I'll be willing to give it some time.
PGU: I've really enjoyed the currently in progress pre-alpha test going on with Titanfall 2. The game is shaping up nicely. Looks and feels great too on PS4.

Interesting, I guess NMS is an MMO technically but realistically with the shear size of it it might be more of a… Well I don't really know what you would call it. I love it! I actually tried to refund my Steam version when the launch release wasn't running so well. Since then the frame rate has fixed itself up to 60+. The element of unending supersize is what draws me in.
I pre-ordered Deus Ex. The collectors edition was cheaper for Prime members so I unloaded. Can you blame me? It comes equipped with a thingy for whoresons sake!! I'm referring to the Jenson figurine by the way. The reviews seem to be going back to the innovation vs legacy conundrum. In other words, if the game holds true to it's roots reviewers hate it for not doing anything new, but if it takes new and bold directions reviewers hate it for not feeling anything like previous installments. wtf?!
Whatever, I'm enjoying Human Revolution right now and will hopefully have is done by Thursday when my copy of Mankind Divided arrives.
Ben, are you going to play FFXV at all? It would be nice to have a conformation on your 99-100% prediction. I'm still optimistic, but far from pre-ordering at this point.
No, I'm not wasting $60 on that filth. 😉
Preordered FF15 because I am hopeful that it is going to be a good game.
From the Duscae demo and some new footage I have watched, it is going to be better than the steaming pile FF13 trilogy.
Ill get Mankind Divided when its on sale, and No Mans sky is going to be a free PS+ game one day I'm sure of it.
Low bar to meet, but then they aren't even in the same genre really.
We miss you Ben!
Installed the PS4 4.00 Beta 2 on my machine.
It is in fact, terrific.
I've only used a couple of the new features and UI changes but they began working pretty much in the same way as my brain was naturally hoping they would.
I will only play FFXV if it's a sanctioned review. I'd do objectively of course but personally I'm where Ben is with the thing. I think the reviews are gonna be trashtastic and rightly so, it doesn't know what it is and it's angry about it.
I'm starting No Man's Sky today with no delusions, the average score is usually below what a reasonable human rates it and I do like to explore space and it should be fun planting my names and flags on things.
I'm also close to finishing Mass Effect 3. Also trying to make time for the FF8 clone Legend of Heroes Trails of Cold Steel. Star Ocean 5 has pinch points I can't get past.
Somebody made me a fan of the Kamen Rider shows. Had to import a game. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57H_3ClJmzE

I've been enjoying No Man's Sky but I understand some of the hate it's getting.
I've been in the mood to replay Earthbound again lately.
