Solid Snake Going Mobile Might Not Be A Terrible Thing

So, Konami now says mobile is their go-to platform and they'll try to bring their vaunted Metal Gear IP to the mobile sphere.

And there goes the collective groan from all avid fans.

Why? Because mobile gaming isn't real gaming. It sucks. It always sucks in comparison to real video games on real platforms. People can blather all they want about how advanced they've become; they are always – and will always – be a far cry from what we can get on our home consoles and PCs. Putting Solid Snake on the weak-ass mobile platform seems like a sin.

But really, it might not be. MGS is one of those franchises that has evolved greatly over the years; the upcoming Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain will adopt a more freedom-oriented structure, for example. And when you compare it to the original MGS back on PlayStation, it's hard to say the two games are in the same franchise. But some really liked the original MGS, just like many really loved the old-school RPGs.

Well, where do you go to see old-school styles of play more and more often? The mobile and portable platforms. That much, I have to admit. Therefore, what if Konami made a mobile game akin to the new VR Missions that came out after MGS during the first PlayStation era? Wouldn't it be kinda cool to revisit that old-fashioned Metal Gear Solid top-down stealth style? I mean, I'm almost more likely to play a Final Fantasy on some silly mobile device as opposed to FFXV.

There are pluses in any given situation, I suppose. You just have to find them. 🙂

If portable is their go-to they must be circling the drain by now. Will Konami keep MGS or can Kojima Productions wrestle it away from them when they leave?

Also, I really hope Castlevania doesn't go %100 mobile. That game needs another reboot in classic style but AAA quality after Mercury Steam made a bit of a mess of things.

I really liked the MercurySteam games and the direction they were taking, at least with the first Lords of Shadow. With a bit of tweaking of the story/atmosphere and the gameplay mechanics, it could have been downright amazing.

MGS belongs to Konami and they'll never give it up. They own the IP and there's nothing Kojima can do about it. Just as well. We can all consider Phantom Pain the franchise's real swan song, and Kojima can go do something different for the first time in forever while Konami runs MGS into the ground.

Lords of Shadow 1 became good after about 7 hours, and I'm playing Lords 2 right now and it's a decent game but I can't see much Castlevania in it at all. These stealth portions are so lame. The plot isn't anywhere near thought out as well as part 1. Nor are the characters.

I want Ninja Theory on it.

Castlevania – Yes – The 2D games are marvelous.

MGS on the other hand? Nope. I highly doubt Kojima would wnat to be involved in such projects.

Yes there is plenty to gain in the mobile market (look at Nintendo trying to jump in too) but I see this as a sign that Konami anticipates a struggle to come after Kojima's departure.

There are mobile games that are very fun and addictive. However, the landscape of mobile gaming is constantly changing and will continue to change to cater to the whimsical nature of its audience.
It is very hard for me not to see doom and gloom in this situation. Right now, I am having a fitful daymare. I keep seeing my phone sending messages urging me to buy extra credits to play Solid Snake Pachinko 🙁

Not if the controls suck. There is a reason why the Vita demanded two analog sticks. As much as I love old RPGs it wouldn't be the same if I had to point to where I want them to go. Or rub my finger over the D-pad on the touch screen. Makes me cringe just thinking about it.

Pass! I play ZERO mobile games.
I only speak for myself, though. My brother is completely addicted to Clash of Clans, so he's all about mobile gaming. lol

was it not just called metal gear in the top down days? didnt it only get the solid added after it went on playstation 1 with the new camera angles?

i dont really care for many mobile games. i do try them sometimes but the only game like that i like is simpsons tapped out. mostly just because i love simpsons. i dont play it all the time though. i get bored with it.

real games are where its at not the mobile crap. they are just doing this cuz they are out of money.

MGS 1 on mobile would absolutely suck. Cell phones and tablets aren't designed for that kind of gameplay. What we really need on tablets is FFVII, VIII and IX. JRPGs are perfect for mobile gaming. Square sucks, though, and just keeps releasing FFIV over and over and over and over.

Though they did put Dragon Quest VIII on tablets. For a ridiculous $20…

This wouldn't be the first time the series considered going onto mobile phones. There was an actual game for the cell phone "Metal Gear Solid Mobile" as there are videos of it on Youtube.

It played like a heavily simplified version of MGS2 and took place between MGS1 and MGS2 during one of Snake and Otacon's missions to destroy one of the many Metal Gear Rex copies around the globe. Though mobile phones can do a considerable amount more than those old Nokias did, it would be a little more fitting on a tablet if they insist on not using the PS Vita/ Nintendo 3DS.

It might not be a terrible thing, but it will be. Konami have proven their incompetence more than enough for me to not even have my usual cautious optimism. They'll screw it up massively and then, if we're extremely lucky, they'll just give up on gaming (they have their hands in a few other industries in Japan) and sell their IPs to someone who knows what they're doing. Otherwise they'll just sit on their names, not doing anything good with them, and not letting anyone else touch them.

If you ask me Konami is very aware that they can't keep up with this generation of consoles so its moving on to easy money an cutting its staff.

So what you're saying is that you approve of all the stuff Konami is doing? Essentially becoming the new Square-Enix. (nothing more but sellouts, who gave in to the system, never to reach the height of their glory days in terms of quality?)

When it boils down to it Konami can't compete with Western developers, and if they think mobile is where its at then it's better for us all that they just give up on developing real games.
