Honestly, Did Everyone Really Expect PS4 To Do This Well?

Being a long-time PlayStation fan and a staunch realist, I hoped Sony's new console would sell exceedingly well, but I didn't count on it.

Be honest now. Did you?

According to the latest financial report, PlayStation 4 has now shipped 22.3 million units globally, and they expect to sell 16 million between now and the end of April 2016. That would bring the total to what, about 38 million sold in the span of two and a half years? I mean, really? By comparison, PS3 needed three and a half years to hit 36 million. Xbox 360 ruled the domestic charts throughout most of the previous generation, even if PS3 eventually caught up to and passed the 360 in the overall global tally (though not by much).

I know the hype for PS4 was hugely positive. I remember it well and I recall being very encouraged with everything I saw, heard, and read. It really sounded like Sony had learned from their mistakes – let's face it; the PS3 launch was a freakin' travesty – and they'd taken all the necessary steps to make the PS4 a success. Even so, they'd have to go head-to-head with Microsoft's new console in November 2013. Despite the negative PR that was floating around for Xbox One that year, it was still a daunting prospect. Xbox was still king in North America.

Now, here we sit and the PS4 is obviously winning. Furthermore, it's winning without having a large assortment of top-tier exclusives; typically the brand's bread-and-butter. We just got Bloodborne but aside from that, we haven't seen much. And yet, PS4 continues to sell and sell. If you had told me the PS4 would be doing this well in the new generation and without the aid of killer exclusive apps, I'd have laughed. And I think most would've responded the same way.

Gotta be pleased with how things are going, though. 😉

Totally didn't, not with the exclusives that didn't live up to expectations.
    But I'm glad it did.

Nope. And I still don't really understand why. I mostly play BF4 these days along with a handful of remasters.

Bro, just look at the other option, gaming wise the XBoxOne it's just the PS4 without Bloodborne (and GuiltyGeard XRD if you like fighting games) and in the terrains of multis everything on the PS4 performs better, isn't like the Ps4 it's awesome just that the XBoxOne (how is managed) it's one of the worst consoles of all time.

I'd argue that just because the Xbone sucks it doesn't necessarily make the PS4 awesome. Don't get me wrong, I like the PS4. It has the potential to be a great console but nothing about it in its current state says(to me anyway) it deserves this much success if you judge the console on its own merits. The OS is riddled with errors and the game library is lacking. The amount of trouble I've had with the PS4 since I got it and the fact the so far this is looking like a Remaster generation than a true next generation has left me personally, wanting.

I said the PS4 isn't awesome ,imo it has been decent and being decent was enough to beat the XboxOne, that's why I really think it gonna be remembered as one of the worst consoles of all time.

Whoops. I misread your comment. Sorry meng. My mistake. To the point I was trying to make is yes, I will agree that because MS screwed themselves its contributed to the PS4's success. But if we judge all of them on their own merits, the PS4 has a ways to go in my opinion before I personally can say it deserves the success it's seen so far.

I know people who frequent this site think I'm just a Nintendo fanboy but by objectively looking at all the systems, while the PS4 and Xbone contain more raw power and are more aspirational, its hard to deny the great things the Wii U has to offer. Not to mention it hasn't given me any major issues and my library for the system is vast with plenty of variety.

I honestly think we should thank Microsoft and the xbox one in part for courteously pulling a kamikaze so early on, practically doing some of the legwork for Sony. So y'know credit where credit is due. Though to be fair they have got their act together somewhat which is great to see.

Now we just need some more great titles to roll out and we'll all be happy. Bloodborne was a great start Sony, now keep it up! 😉

Honestly, I expected Microsoft to put up more of a fight. It's like Pacquiao going down in the 2nd round.

Edit: Got to gloat. I got the beautiful RED controller from Japan. Cost a little more but it's gorgeus.

I thought they'd do better after MS crapped the bed, but no, I didn't expect them to come away with it this extremely.

Still, in the long run, it's early!

Simply put, I will never believe anyone who claims they foresaw this. I think it's ridiculous.

PS4 does not deserve the success it's getting. Lack of AAA titles and a market rediculously flooded with indies really gets on my nerves. 99.9% of said indie games would be better off on Android. If I wanted to play Nintendo games,I'd plug in my NES. No offense to indie devs but I bought my PS4 to play PS4 games. Only 1 indie has stood out for me, although horribly repetitive and lacking in content, Strike Suit Zero was alot of fun. So in conclusion MORE PS4, LESS PS SNORE.
