Ben’s Week In Review: May 22

I feel like I'm already out of the gaming loop, because I don't know anything new that happens during the course of a week. I hear whispers here and there but as I don't actively search through gaming news anymore, I'm definitely lost.

Which isn't a bad thing, by the way. After living and breathing industry news for nearly a decade, it feels nice to step back. Besides, it also means that whenever I do find time to check things out, it's all news to me. 😉

Not sure about Gran Turismo Sport…

So I hear Yamauchi's next potential masterpiece arrives in November . As some of you probably know, I'm a huge GT fan so normally, I'd be all over this. But isn't Sport the pseudo-installment in the franchise, the one that's basically just for multiplayer? Or is this a full-fledged entry with the same robust single-player mode the franchise has always had? I know it supports VR but I don't care about that because I won't be involved in virtual reality, and I seem to remember the original announcement…didn't they say this one would be multiplayer-centric, and it's not the next official entry?

If so, I'll wait for Gran Turismo 7 . I've got Dishonored 2 for November, anyway, which I absolutely cannot wait to play.

Yes, we know it's Red Dead 2. JUST ANNOUNCE IT ALREADY!

Hey, I totally agree with what Take-Two and Rockstar have said in the past, about game companies announcing games too early. But I'm just so anxious to hear about a follow-up to Red Dead Redemption , which was one of my favorite games of the previous generation. We've seen and heard evidence that RDR2 is coming, and maybe Rockstar will announce it "soon." I wish they'd just reveal it so we can start getting all excited. The downside is that considering their stance on when to announce new products, it's more than feasible that this anticipated sequel will land this year. And just my luck it'll show up in November. 'rolling eyes'

It's okay if Kingdom Hearts III won't be ready until 2017

I guess Square Enix won't release either Final Fantasy VII Remake or KHIII this year, and that's just fine by me. The Remake will be a sacrilegious abomination, anyway, and we've got plenty to play the second half of 2017. On top of which, I'm a little worried about Kingdom Hearts III …the Final Fantasy XV demo was so horrifically bad from a mechanical standpoint and if KHIII controls that way, I won't be playing it. I know we're talking about two different development teams but it still concerns me. Obviously, these guys aren't cut out to make an action/RPG – with the obvious emphasis on action – and while KH has always controlled fine before, FFXV was actually a regression. Hell, KHII was mechanically superior to that mess of a demo.

Well, whatever. Plenty of other stuff coming.

Personal gaming update

I'm savoring Uncharted 4 ; currently on Chapter 17. It's just so amazing. Easily the best game I've played this generation, having already supplanted The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt . I will do a review when I'm done, so just be patient. Speaking of The Witcher , have they announced an official date for the Blood and Wine expansion yet? Was that June 7 rumor correct? I haven't bothered to look it up yet; just wondering. Mirror's Edge Catalyst is set for the 7th, though, and that will have to be played as soon as I get it. In the meantime, I'll finish Uncharted 4 and get started on DOOM , which I just picked up. I've heard some good things about it and I can't wait to get going. Finally, a no-holds-barred, over-the-top fire-fest, the way shooters always used to be. 🙂

Gran Turismo sport is a side title, it sounds pretty cool but I think I read the same thing it is going to be basically a multiplayer only/demo version for GT7.

Red Dead Redemption was awesome, I didn't think it NEEDED a sequel although I would welcome one. I have a soft spot for westerns. The first games story actually had me choked up at the end. When that song plays as you're riding back to your family….from that point to credits rolling I was just emotionally charged.

KH3 will have awesome gameplay, everything from the videos make it look mega responsive. I didn't have the problems some of you had with FF15s combat, but the gameplay teams are completely different. Nomuras games always control well. My main concern is with the story, it has gotten so convoluted that I'm wondering how they will make sense of it all. I love the themes of friendship though, and those games always seem to pull at my heart strings.

PGU:

Finished Uncharted 4 and I'm going to get a lot of hate but I felt a bit underwhelmed. I enjoyed the treasure hunt story, but I felt the story telling itself was kind of weak. Motivations of some of the characters mainly the villains were kind of meh to me, and there are some things that happen purely as plot devices to move the story forward and that is fine but a couple of them make no sense. And when they explain how a certain person finds someone the explanation is weak. Also several times when people are forced to find another way around and the team has to separate … yet Drake has a stinking grappling hook on a rope he could easily use to pull people up to him….however they ignore that he has this in order to move the plot the direction they want to…which is fine…just kind of silly, especially one part at the end.

Gameplay was the best in the series, I stealthed pretty much every section that didn't force me into a gun fight. I think the hand to hand combat was weaker than 2 and 3, but I think they made it button mashy to keep the flow of combat moving. You can easily move between stealth, melee, gunplay platforming takedowns and then move back into stealth if you are good enough. It is pretty smooth and satisfying.

I loved the return to platforming, I only wished that the platforming was a little more challenging.

Overall I was just let down by the writing of the story, not the overall plot I loved it, but certain plot holes and motivations left me a little meh feeling. Character interactions were very good though and for the most part felt really natural.

I would give the whole game a solid 8.5/10

For anyone who has finished the game, was I the only one who was hoping that the epilogue would turn into a teaser for TLoU 2? It honestly felt like the beginning of TLoU. That would have blown me away and just been the coolest thing anyone has ever done in a series.

Regarding the epilogue anything ragrding TLoU was the furthest thing from my mind. What they did was awesome and I'm glad it wasn't some sort of teaser for a different game. Perfect send off and they did the series justice.

I think Uncharted 4 has one of the strongest stories in the series. I wouldn't dare argue with you because you brought up valid points that support *your* opinion. However, I considered the whole experience well executed. Which pits me completely opposite how you feel.

Reason being is ND has always used the gameplay to move the story and the writing to move the gameplay. They do it brilliantly. Some choices have to be made to cater to the gameplay and vise versa. Consider Drake using that rope to do as you suggested and look at it from the gameplay or writing perspective and it could become a cop out. I'm not suggesting it's not a likely scenario but all things considered, pffft this game is brilliant.

I seriously don't know how I can play any other video game without feeling let down. It's easily a 10 out 10 for me. It epitamizes what I think video games set out to do.

Yeah the over arching narrative was fantastic. I am just nit picky with little details, it doesn't stop me from enjoying the game or story but I pretty much can't watch a movie or play a game without having some minor complaints about plot holes, or weird motivations.

I had fun but I felt kind of empty after I beat it, UC2 is still my favourite in the series. I did enjoy the epilogue it was awesome, but it REALLY reminded me of TLoU, and the music was even similar I dunno I thought it would have been awesome, just because it has never been done before.

I might just be getting burned out from games or maybe my tastes have changed. MGS5 I felt disappointed with, and UC4 while I wasn't disappointed with it I dunno underwhelmed is the word I would use to describe it.

One thing I would like to see in games in general is enemies value their life more. UC3 I found it ridiculous that enemies were fighting you when the house was burning around them.

UC4 did this well, I don't remember any parts where I was like wondering why the enemies didn't value their lives more.

I agree with you and I'm glad I'm not alone. It felt good yet somehow underwhelming. If it were another dev I might've ignored the annoying plot holes but it's naughty dog. After the master piece that was the last of us I didn't expect a drop in quality. Well now I understand why people were leaving the project.

Story is very subjectice to everyone, I though it was the best story head and shoulders above the others.I personally though the story (and action sequences) for the first three games were generic, I wasn't even going to play it but the hype got me and I ended up very pleased in the end.I would recommended to anyone that didn't like the previous games, even the guy in this site that always bashes uncharted.

Glad I'm not alone either.

Anyone else find it funny too that the characters kept pointing out that almost everything Nate touched broke? I kind of got tired of it by the end of the game, however it was toned down compared to UC3. Every ledge felt like it broke when you grabbed it 😛

I am curious as to what the scrapped story that Amy wrote was about. This story was pretty grounded in reality, but I wonder what direction she was taking the story in.

bigrailer19
bigrailer19

Xenris – I'm the same way with movies and games haha. But Uncharted must be the exception. Honestly there's a lot of times where I wonder if I can enjoy games anymore, then Uncharted 4 comes around and I'm all about it. Unfortunately I think because of ND I have a hard time enjoying games anymore. What I mean by that is I only get excited about a few games a year. My standards have risen since I played Drakes Fortune. However the caveat to that is co-op games. Mindless fun with friends will get me to buy a game everytime.

I'd be curious about what Amy was writing as well. But quite frankly I'm super satisfied as a fan with what was done. I was so worried about it, and in the end, perfect. I really enjoyed it. But I found it interesting there was a Thank you to Amy in the credits. I'm sure it was heartfelt, but part of me wonders if it was something else.

Karnelli – Uncharted 4 isn't a Drop in quality. In fact while the writing was good in TLoU, it was so predictable. I knew what was going to happen the moment the beginning, ended. Not to mention it's as cliche a story as you can get. But that doesn't make it bad as I love TLoU. But writing for writing both are top notch. The rest is subjective.

Yeah Bigrailer, I pretty much play games for the co-op social experience these days or if it is a really challenging game like a Soulsborne. That and I think Dota 2 and Counterstrike I will always play every now and again.

I'm finding it hard for single player games to suck me in these days. I'm optimistic about FF15 so I hope that will do it for me, but really the last game I got addicted to was The Witcher 3 and even that I had to force myself to play it and then I couldn't stop. Before that it was Shadow of Mordor which I think was just such a gem of a game.

But yeah I dunno I think its hard for me to get sucked into narratives right now, its competition season for gymnastics and my mind can't not think about my athletes and the sport and yeah my mind is pretty much dialed into all things coaching. Once July hits Ill probably have a more clear head.

What games are you looking forward to this summer? I'm actually stoked for the Platinum games Ninja Turtles game. Looks like some wicked co op fun.

Xenris- Yes a co-op turtles game has me excited as well!

I got sucked into Fallout 4, recently and tried to go back to it last night and couldn't get into it. I'm not far into it so I gotta keep playing. Maybe last night was just being tired or something.

Otherwise the division caught my attention but playing solo is a chore and all my buddies hit lvl 30 before I even bought it. Mkultra and I played and that was fun but of course Uncharted came out following that and well it was all Uncharted at that point.

My next major game I'm looking forward to would be red dead 2, or a Borderlands 3. I know Borderlands is a couple years out anyways but red dead could be anytime. Well I'm hopeful anyways.

Nice, I haven't tried the Division although I really want to. Do I have you on PSN? My name is Xenris spelled the same way as it is here only with caps.

I would love to play the Turtles co op with you when it comes out!

Red Dead 2 should be awesome, I have such a soft spot for westerns.

My problem with all of that is it's SO nitpicky that there isn't a game in existence that would fully please you. The bottom line is that everything Uncharted 4 does, it does it better than just about every other title out there. The combined package is obviously head-and-shoulders above anything else currently sitting on store shelves.

I mean, every single story-driven interactive experience has plot devices to move the story forward. It's a necessity. None of it can be compared to reality; why bother about asking if Drake can use the grappling hook to haul people around, when he obviously has impossible grip strength? This is fantasy, and as a story-driven interactive fantasy, that has to make sense from both a gameplay AND a narrative standpoint, it's basically perfect. Or as close to it as we've probably ever seen, which should really be the takeaway from that experience, IMO.

bigrailer19

I would say The Division is definitely worth a play. It's great for co-op. It lacks any real good story telling and the dark zone has become a free for all at this point, but that was inevitable. But still it's engaging and fun with some nice rpg elements.

Yep I'm down for turtles. I hope it's decent in length. When is it releasing anyways?

I'll add you on PSN tonight.

Yes Ben I know it is nit picky which is why I tried to emphasis I have this problem with EVERY form of media. Doesn't mean I don't enjoy the entertainment though.

I still think UC2 is the definitive Uncharted experience, I liked its overall narrative more. Although UC4 is a close second and I like the pirate treasure hunt a lot as a story. I kind of wanted more puzzles in UC4 though, and slightly more difficult platforming puzzles, or more timing based platforming things.

Small complaints though, I think the game is great, just not the best thing ever. Which I think is just me being burned out from games lately or just not as in to them lately.

@Bigrailer Ill be looking for you 🙂 I hope turtles is long or at the very least has good reason to replay the game.

I just watched some gameplay for TMNT, and it looks really fun. I was kind of thinking it looked a little easy as it seemed like footsoldiers were nothing but punching bags. Then they got to a boss and it was clear that there's some difficulty to it. I'll be getting it for sure. It's got a good price at $49.99 too. Hopefully that doesn't mean lack of content.

Well if there is a difficulty selection I always put it up to the hardest. If you are down to go through the game with me on hard mode providing there is one, then I think thats what we should do 🙂

Hell yeah! I haven't played The Division since that one night either Bigrailer. I'm still not even leveled up in that game if you ever want to give it another go.

And I'm super stoked on the new Platinum TMNT game! If that game is four person co op I'd love to get down on that shit with you guys. We need a fourth turtle though.

And thanks for continuing to drop by Ben. Hopefully you get a new sense of passion for gaming now that it's not a 24/7 job for you anymore. Now you only have to pay attention to the good shit. Lol. And I think they said GT Sport will have 117 events not tied to online so it should hopefully be a robust entry. I'm stoked for GT in VR though, so I might be a little more excited than you.

I think it's 4 player Co op. I got a 4th I just convinced another buddy to get it.

Dibs on Mikey!

And yeah I need to get through The Division so sometime soon we'll need to play.

I bought Super Mega Baseball during the flash sale and it's a blast. Especially to pass the time or get a quick game in.

World, not sure if that is directed at me, but two things. First I was talking about cutscenes where they needed to get up somewhere and could have just used the grappling hook to do it, but it would have interfered with the narrative or plot device.

Third of all, you can charge it up and smash people with it online 😛

I'm honestly surprised by the good Doom reviews. I thought it might fall flat, but glad it seems like it didn't. Can't wait to try it out. I haven't played a Doom game since the original on PS1 that my sister got me for Christmas. Also really excited for Mirror's Edge. One of my favorite PS3 games.
Currently playing (slowly) through the Nathan Drake Collection before delving into UC4.

Something about being able to mess around with cars I can actually understand the feeling of without hurting their secondhand value. That has always been a huge selling point for me.

Cant wait to hear about Red Dead 2 and if the Games with Gold rumors are true that Red Dead Redemption is one of June's GwG and since all Xbox 360 games are backwards compatible i would have played Red Dead Redemption on every console i own but Ps4. Totally forgot about Kingdom Hearts 3 oh well no real loss.

I actually considered picking up UC4 until i kept reading how people were enjoying the platforming, i detest platforming games so i'll pass on it.

PGU: I have about 10 more heists on Deathwish to do before getting the platinum on Payday 2, definitely one of the hardest platinum trophies i've gone for. Picked up Valkyria Chronicles remastered but want to finish Payday first before jumping back into that masterpiece. I just hope Overkill doesn't release their update around the same time as No Man's Sky because i'll have a really tough decision then on what to play.

The platforming in Uncharted 4 is very easy, it isn't hard. The game mixes platforming, combat, stealth and story telling pretty well I think you would enjoy it.

I played the first Uncharted and just found it to be boring and non-challenging on every level. Don't get me wrong i would score the game high but that series is not for me. I like platforming as much as i like sports games, which is to say i would rather pull out my teeth with a wrench then play them. 20 years ago i couldn't get enough of either now they annoy me to no end.

The platforming isn't the platforming of 20 years ago, it's just tension and ooo-aaahhh. For a challenge Up the difficulty and try stealth instead of gung ho shooting. But yeah it's more for the cinematic and incredible story, you want challenging go for Dark Souls.

@World:maybe you read it allready:rumors are that there will be a dlc for Fallout 4 called "Nuka World"and we would hear more about it at E3.

the developers say that they are primarily going to hit Nexus Mods with the release and on Bethesda[dot]net as well for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC platforms :).

When I say gamey game I mean a game that just gets by purely on how awesome it is to play the whole time and doesn't rely on its story.

It's all game. The story is about as much as it was when the first game came out. Somebody found a new energy source on Mars and it ended up openining a gate to Hell sooooo yeah.

It was worth the $55 to me, but some may think that by today's standards it's worth less cuz it doesn't have all the doohickeys and open worlds and it's more about fast fun and mayhem and exploring hellish areas.

Bear in mind there's a mode that lets you make your own maps and play other people's maps so that's kinda big.

Xenris- Yes a co-op turtles game has me excited as well!

I got sucked into Fallout 4, recently and tried to go back to it last night and couldn&#39t get into it. I&#39m not far into it so I gotta keep playing. Maybe last night was just being tired or something.

Otherwise the division caught my attention but playing solo is a chore and all my buddies hit lvl 30 before I even bought it. Mkultra and I played and that was fun but of course Uncharted came out following that and well it was all Uncharted at that point.

My next major game I&#39m looking forward to would be red dead 2, or a Borderlands 3. I know Borderlands is a couple years out anyways but red dead could be anytime. Well I&#39m hopeful anyways.

Xenris – I&#39m the same way with movies and games haha. But Uncharted must be the exception. Honestly there&#39s a lot of times where I wonder if I can enjoy games anymore, then Uncharted 4 comes around and I&#39m all about it. Unfortunately I think because of ND I have a hard time enjoying games anymore. What I mean by that is I only get excited about a few games a year. My standards have risen since I played Drakes Fortune. However the caveat to that is co-op games. Mindless fun with friends will get me to buy a game everytime.

I&#39d be curious about what Amy was writing as well. But quite frankly I&#39m super satisfied as a fan with what was done. I was so worried about it, and in the end, perfect. I really enjoyed it. But I found it interesting there was a Thank you to Amy in the credits. I&#39m sure it was heartfelt, but part of me wonders if it was something else.

Karnelli – Uncharted 4 isn&#39t a Drop in quality. In fact while the writing was good in TLoU, it was so predictable. I knew what was going to happen the moment the beginning, ended. Not to mention it&#39s as cliche a story as you can get. But that doesn&#39t make it bad as I love TLoU. But writing for writing both are top notch. The rest is subjective.

Yeah Bigrailer, I pretty much play games for the co-op social experience these days or if it is a really challenging game like a Soulsborne. That and I think Dota 2 and Counterstrike I will always play every now and again.

I&#39m finding it hard for single player games to suck me in these days. I&#39m optimistic about FF15 so I hope that will do it for me, but really the last game I got addicted to was The Witcher 3 and even that I had to force myself to play it and then I couldn&#39t stop. Before that it was Shadow of Mordor which I think was just such a gem of a game.

But yeah I dunno I think its hard for me to get sucked into narratives right now, its competition season for gymnastics and my mind can&#39t not think about my athletes and the sport and yeah my mind is pretty much dialed into all things coaching. Once July hits Ill probably have a more clear head.

What games are you looking forward to this summer? I&#39m actually stoked for the Platinum games Ninja Turtles game. Looks like some wicked co op fun.

Story is very subjectice to everyone, I though it was the best story head and shoulders above the others.I personally though the story (and action sequences) for the first three games were generic, I wasn&#39t even going to play it but the hype got me and I ended up very pleased in the end.I would recommended to anyone that didn&#39t like the previous games, even the guy in this site that always bashes uncharted.
