Fans have been calling for remakes for years, but Square-Enix and other publishers have turned a deaf ear to such requests.
Even so, the gamers won't stop hoping. According to Andriasang citing a poll from Goo Ranking, the Final Fantasy franchise tops the list of games fans would most like to see be remade. In fact, VII, VIII and IX are all in the top 3 and VIII was actually most requested. It was a small survey that took place in the month of October, but it's worth noting and certainly worth discussing; here's the top 15 of the list:
1. Final Fantasy VIII (Square)
2. Final Fantasy VII (Square)
3. Final Fantasy IX (Square)
4. Xenogears (Square)
5. Valkyrie Profile (Enix)
6. Paraiste Eve (Square)
7. Ghost in the Shell (Sony)
8. Bakusou Dekotora Densetsu (Human)
9. Klonoa: Door to Phantomile (Namco)
10. Dino Crisis (Capcom)
11. King's Field (From Software)
12. Segare Ijiri (Square)
13. Legend of Dragoon (Sony)
14. Front Mission Alternative (Square)
15. Vagrant Story (Square)
Yeah, that's quite the list. Can you imagine getting high-definition remakes of these memorable experiences…? We've been asking for FF remakes for God knows how long, but so far, Square-Enix has had other plans. Perhaps if more people can convince the company that a FF remake project is a good idea, they'll finally get the hint. But don't hold your breath.
idk about those kind of remakes, square enix will just messed up and make them multiplat. all i want is legend of dragoon remake or sequel

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but FF 7,8,9 and 10 were Square"soft" and were under contract with Sony whom I believe owns certain rights to those Final Fantasy. This is why three of those games are on the PSN and not xbox live. Now I don't know if my info is correct so anyone with accurate knowledge please correct me. I think if Sony had a hand in these remakes by Square or Square-enix they might have hope.
As i've said before, i'm on the fence when it comes to Final Fantasy remakes. Given SE's track record this gaming generation, at least right now I don't trust they'd do them right. However if the original minds from Square, Monolith Soft, and Sony came together again I would absolutely have not a shred of doubt.
yes sony owns some right to atleast FFVII that i know of so no multy plat for that one, dont know about the others but i hope so
I could not have said it any better buddy.
Legend of Dragoon sequel would be excellent
FF VII, VIII and IX in HD with trophies! Yes please!
Will always just be a dream!
If LoD ever got a remake I would be the happiest person in the world.
On a side note, Ben I noticed a commercial for DJ Hero 2 had a citation from PSXExtreme. I honestly had no idea this site was that well accepted and used in the actual gaming world, but I'm very happy it is. I love this site, and I'm proud to be part of the community.
Yeah, I know. Activision asked for permission to use a quote from us.
It doesn't happen often but it does happen every now and then.
And thanks. 🙂

That must've been a big accomplishment for you.. I mean unless it's happened before, I haven't seen every commercial ever. If it was the first time though, I could imagine you'd be very happy about it.
Which commercial?
Mix 2gether?
I don't remember specifically
Couldn't find one on Youtube though.
That's pretty neat. Ben's editorials often garner attention around the interwebs as well, probably because all the other sites just have rants or straight news instead of thought provoking analysis. That's the kind of stuff I'm into, I could write an editorial every day.
Yeah, it has happened before. But like I said, it's rare.
Funny, majority of the list are from Square, someone must have thrown an amnesia bomb to their HQ.
yeah, they go by the nefarious name of Microsoft and that bomb exploded into cash dollars.
Would Namco stop being retarded and just release Tekken 3 on PSN already. I don't even really care for an HD-remake.
And I'm really surprised FFVIII beat out FFVII in popularity. Just cause it seems FFVII has been the more popular title as it generated a spin-off CG movie and PSP game.
Interesting that Ghost in the Shell made the cut. I did actually play the PSX game back in the day. At least the one where you maneuvered the Tachicoma tank-thing.
lol i just notice that right now. wasnt paying attention
How did VIII make number 1? I love VIII but c'mon! It's not better than VII or IX.
nah it's better than IX 🙂
Agreed that it is better then 9, but you think 7 beat it? I love the game, but VIII just had a great storyline. plus legit weapons if you went and found all the items.
Pfft, as if, IX beats those two =P
Ha! Clearly everyone has their favorites. I loved them all. FF7 have the best regular battle music but FF 8's battle music when playing as Laguna makes me want to go back and play FF 8 right now. Has a whole FF 9 got me because it returned to that medieval feel and had a sound track to match to a T. And FF 9 had some solid mini games as well.
IT's cause this survey was done by checklist. 100% of the people checked ff8 then around 99.8% checked ffvii and the ff9 around 90's but xenogears only had 30's. Just shows how much people love FF series! This is a sign of the FFVII remake.
VIII beat VII because apparently (according to the andriasang article) 2/3 of the people surveyed were female.
Chicks dig VIII. It's a fact.
LOL! My wife hated VIII. She thinks Squall is a pu**y and Rinoa is a dits. I only agree with her about Squall. 😉
My former university roommate is literally in love with Rinoa, and sometimes I think he'll never find love until he finds a Rinoa clone.
Every girl he's ever dated has long black hair and fair skin, too. lol!
He actually, nerded up and learned some CG design and is making a FF8 sequel in the form of webisodes. lol…. *sigh* ah well, he's a great guy. Except for the time I bought DQ8 and HE beat it before me….. jerk….
Yea, VIII is definitly way better than IX
It's no news to me, VIII was always better than VII.
How come there´s no Metal Gear, Resident Evil or Crash Bandicoot?
Oh, I can see King´s Field on the list, Demon´s Souls espiritual predecesor.

Because it was a Japanese site poll, so obviously those games were not as popular in Japan as they were in the West. They love their RPGs in Japan.
Metal Gear was famous in japan.
Exactly what prompted the desire to have FF VII to be remade in the first place? Please don't tell me it was because of that tech demo from 2005. It like people forgot it was something only for technological demonstration purposes :
Not forgot, disregarded. YES, that is what staretd it.
That absolutely began it. In a consumer's mind a company with a brain (and we still had faith in them at that time) doesn't release a tech demo for arguably the greatest game ever created (for an upcoming console of immense power) unless they mean to hint at something.
Alas, it was just a tech demo though. And SE ultimately has no brain any longer.
Well of COURSE FFVIII came in first. Gunblades beat out no fingers every time.
And Dino Crisis over MGS? Big upset there.
Well MGS1 had a Gamecube Remake so yeah.
But I'd still prefer a MGS1 remake on ps3 or ps4 over Dino Crisis either way.
I think we need to reclassify "remake" so that we know what people are voting for. Do we just want an HD upgrade from the original, or a full on overhaul like everyone seems to want from FFVII?
While I would prefer the latter for most of those games, it is unlikely coming from those companies. I would definitely settle for HD upgrades though, cuz they look so horrible on HD TVs. At least they tend to look pretty good on PSP though.
I would absolutely settle for HD LoD and FF7. Maybe add some new quests, but ONLY optional ones. DO NOT mess with the gameplay or story.
An HD remake of 7 would certainly be cute, but I believe a complete remake would be better. Seeing as how they've remade a number of scrappy FF games to play on the DS, why can't we expect some kind of upgrade for the best games FF had to offer?
I think it's a reasonable request. And fingers dammit! Fiiiingers!
They still have problems with fingers, even in the prettiness of FFXIII they look like lego blocks.
But, no, we can't ask them to do something as insane as make a game that the whole world has been clamoring for for half a decade which could single handedly outsell any RPG ever made and possibly even a CoD game or two. That would be suicide to make a game that everybody wants. It's madness, makes no sense to go after profit if that means bringing back the battle system and gameplay that everybody wishes never left in the first place because everyone needs must love killtubes and constant twitchy action now.
Did any of you guys get to play the PC version of FF7? Far better character presentation with fingers. Go look up some clips on you-tube. PS version got jipped.
I played it on PC as well as PS1, the PC version is obviously visually superior, very crisp.
That's odd. I have FFVII on PC, triangle box and all, and I certainly don't recall any fingers in it. Not on Cloud anyway…
Heck yeah ff8 beat ff7 for the no.1 . Not that anything was wrong with 7, I enjoyed it. Just not as much as 8. So its really just my personal preferance.
But if I could have it my way ( and I wish I could ) I would like a remake of all of them. But not a square-enix remake. I would want an old school, still know how to make an amazing rpg square SOFT remake.
But, if wishes were anything, than id be something. Or something like that
I wouldn't mind a Omega Boost remake. That game was FUN. And all to replace an infected tube on the first computer. "Did you remember your socks?"

What about FFXIII? Can we get a remake of that?
Oh, this is PS1 only? Drat.
No, according to SE themselves, "certain" limitations on a "certain" console left "certain" gigantic parts equal to an entire game on the cutting room floor and that's the way they like it.
Well… when my sister cooks a dinner, there's often left over scraps for days.
But when my mom cooks…. you can bet your butt there are never any leftovers.
You must also assume that both make the same amount of food, by the way.
I have a plan. I'll come in SE at an entry level position, perhaps, a night custodian, then I'll work my way through the ranks to become CEO of the company. At that point, I shall freeze all new IPs until the games listed above have all found new life.
